As someone who prefers subtitled anime, I have to say that the dub in here is actually not as bad as a lot of others. It has minor timing issues but the voice actors and re-recording is handled pretty well. Nice vid.
I agree that this had to be one of the best English dubs of an anime I've ever heard. Even though all the characters spoke English, because the characters of this show are so diverse it would've been cool for them to each speak with their respective accents. Like Rock with a Japanese accent, the Chinese characters with a Chinese accent, and Balalaika sort of had an accent that came and went. And of course Benny, Dutch and Revy are American, so they sound OK. I wish this show lasted forever! X-D
. . . . And, from that point on, Rock became a man instead of a corporate stooge. And it took a twisted gun-toting, shock-jock, rum-swallowing, bullet-spitting, curse-spouting bitch like Revy to do it. :-) I love this anime. Don't you?
Black Lagoon is one of the few series I've seen (heard?) dubbed well. I don't know what it is about American voice acting, but it's just so hard to find any that aren't cringe-inducing.
@IamLisaYo technically not anymore, but the first two seasons were brought to canada via a company called geneon for dubbing, but geneon has since gone under and now funimation bought the distribution rights so the seasons can be sold, but the dub for those two seasons is still done in canada.
WTH? that black guys voice...., it's some douchebag whiteboy person trying to pitch his voice to sound black, and failing horribly.

I really don't like the English version of Black Lagoon. If you watch the Japanese version, you love it very quickly. The character voices go together a LOT better then in English. Also, if you read the text at the bottom for the Japanese version, and then watch the English version, they change a LOT. Now I understand there is a large difference between the two languages.. But if someone can write it all out in the way it was meant, why can't the English version stick to the script?
Because it's meant to adapt to the targeted audience, they're not supposed to copy the Originals' script word-for-word.

not to mention Revy said "You're coming with us.... dumb-ass!"
Dumbass? Doesn't Revy say Dibshit in the Japanese Version? My point exactly regarding the vulgarity of the anime. They'll probably have censors too in the Dub.
it all depends on how you translate the original japanese.. japanese can be translated many different ways, because of their sentence structure.
english has a very rigid sentence structure compared to japanese. and japanese is very vague most of the time. english tends to be a bit more precise at making people feel bad about themselves.. baka
couldn't disagree more.. i watched the first season subbed, and the second dubbed.. i gotta say the dub was much better at getting the vulgarity across..
there's just no comparison to english when it comes to curses.. we have the best insults in the world, ask around :)
i like this dub just for the reason the voices match. true the japanese is better, but the english dub makes more sense seeing as they are speaking english the entire series.
this is probably the best dub ever. the only thing that would have made it perfect is if every member of hotel moscow had a russian accent. then it would have been perfect
@GOODPLAYA20 and if Chang had a chinese accent. but that might take away from his badassness. Also, it's funny how Rock's the only member of Lagoon Company who's born and bred from a different country. Revy's Chinese American but from New York City, Dutch is African American probably from the State, and Benny's a white guy from Florida (i think that's the state he mentions).

meh my view on this is that ppl should watch the japanese version. not becouse im saying that the americans "dubbers" are bad, but becouse voice action in japan is a HUGE thing, its a huge marced for it, and therfore people are better to it. japan just have voice acting like americans have acting in movies. take in some culture! read the english text :D
This series makes absolutely no sense if you watch it in Japanese because 95% of the time the characters are speaking English. In fact, the last arc is the only place where the characters are actually speaking Japanese (apart from a few parts of episodes 1 and 2). Black Lagoon isn't just easier to follow when dubbed; it just plain makes sense.
Thing about Japanese subs are that... Well, take the last episodes of Black Lagoon. *SPOILERS* When Rock translated for Balalaika in the English dub (and I thought this was awesome) he was speaking Japanese. ...How would they do that in the Japanese version? Would he just repeat what she said? They couldn't change the language, cuz that wouldn't make sense. So I guess I just gotta watch the original version of those episodes...
dubs of animation are fine when done right, i dont particularly like wasting my time reading captions AND trying to admire nuances in artwork, dubs of live action are more dubious and can be hit or very miss
Not tough enough? Would you rather they cast a male voice actor for her? She sounds convincing to me. I think you're just being overly complicated. :|
If you watch this anime all the way through, you'll realize that pretty much everyone in the show is speaking English, but instead of putting subtitles all the way through it, the creators decided it would be better to just create the illusion that they're speaking Japanese. The English dub will make more sense since they'll actually be speaking English.
All dubs suck major ass. This one's no different. The English voice actor for Dutch doesn't have a deep/harsh enough voice to compare to the original and the one doing Revy is too smooth/sexy sounding, not rugged/guttural enough to let the bad girl shine like she's supposed to.
What I find so awesome about Benny's voice is that it's the very first voice actor for Vegeta from Dragonball Z. I was wondering what the guy was up to now. XD
Its about pirates off the south china seas. Its setting is off a fictional island close to thailand. The gang heads off to basilan island in eps 9-12 I believe.
I would say I enjoy subs and dubs equally. But it is typically whether i watch the show in japanese or english first. And on what actors and studios are handling the show.
For instance, I watched Gundam Seed in all english, so whenever i see it in japanese it doesnt sound right. And for Ouran, watching it in all Japanese makes me less open to the english dub.
This and Hellsing are the only 2 animes with a REALLY good dub done by REALLY good voice actors, who do it because they like it and they enter into their character's parts, that's why it sounds cool.
Toatally agree with you. Plus it makes more sense in english. All of the characters except for Rock , his old company and the Washmine group, are of some other nationality that is not japanese. Like hellsing, the original creator (he said so in an interview)and the series itself is intended to be in english but the japanese is just there for the audience.
Yeah, I agree that the Deathnote dub was done really well also. But every time I watch Deathnote I always picture Rock whenever Light is talking... XD
And seriously, most people are only watching dubs because they can´t follow the subs easily. I understand this, as they haven´t read subs that much. I´m just tired of this, this is getting nowhere. Both sides are equally wrong. I just hate subs, sorry. It´s comparable to re-recording an album with vocals in different language, for example. = / I see this as a wrong thing to do. If you´re too lazy to read, you hardly deserve to see it even in dub.
No, being a person who is both sub and dub fan, I can safely say that most people do *not* watch dubs just because they don't enjoy reading. Some do, but most don't, so I would appreciate that you do not carelessly generalize like that about dubbers because it is a somewhat ignorant thing to do. Most [eople like dubs because they want to experience a different interpretation of the same character. Not inaccurate, but to express a part of the character that the Japanese dub may fail to express.
Please... Now you´re blaming the ones who like subs and telling it´s elitism? Ones who like subs have been bashed here all the time, just for you to know. And it´s a god damn fact that the japanese voices are made with more effort and time. But still it´s matter of opinion. I just haven´t heard any good dub, sorry. And I have no interest in searching for them because I enjoy japanese voices. And thanks fergs103. =D
No, I blame those who exhibit an annoying superiority complex against those who love dubs and treat them like heretics for doing so, thank you very much. If you like anime in sub and you have a real *valid* reason for disliking dub, great. When it comes to Sub vs Dub, I mostly go by which sounds appropriate to me when I read the original material(the manga). And in my opinion, both japanese and english VA represent different facets of the characters' personality that are both found in the manga.
Oh, this isn't about bashing the original VAs, it's about those who come in to bash the english with for not justifiable cause or reason. I don't necessarily approve of it either, but it you want to be truly objective, it's same type of behavior several times over with the Japanese sub threads when they say they like the dub better. So, try to look at it from two perspectives instead of acting like the role of the victim because it's far more vicious and bigoted on the other side of the fence.
I´m not acting like a victim (though I am that, all my messages have thumbs down for no reason), and I´m not thinking myself as a better person than someone who likes dubs. I know that some people do this though. People can like subs, I have nothing against that. But myself, I watch with subs because I respect the original voices and I want to experience it as it was meant to be experienced. I can easily read subs, I have no need to even try subs. And lets add that I´ve heard only bad subs.
There you go. You don't persecute those who like dubs out of bias and have legitimate reason for disliking dubs, but others do. These are the people that repulse me and others, and are becoming far too common in anime fandom lately. That's where my issues lie.
Yeah, I see. I´m against those people too. But I fail to see the whole point of dubbing, as to my eyes, it´s like pissing on someone´s work, not a possibility to "experience a different interpretation". Subtitles are made that people from different countries can enjoy the show. Whole issue wouldn´t exist if shows have never been dubbed, or vice versa of course. I just see subbing as a better option. I want to see the show as the creator wanted it to be. Because of this, I put sub always first.
Of course, "How the creator wanted it to be" is too broad a concept since it's conjecture of whether or not they have any actual say about the animation of their work. For example, Watsuki Nobuhiro, the author of Rurouni Kenshin, didn't like the Japanese voice for Kenshin since it sounded too feminine and he stated that he wanted Kenshin to sound more "neutral". The creator of El Hazard also personally stated that he thought the English dub was better than the Japanese version.
So, The japanese creators don't necessarily view the american counterparts of characters as bastardizations(Unless it's 4kids doing the dubbing since they *intentionally* butcher the original anime so horrendously, Anime studios no longer allow them to license their franchise outside of Japan).
Everyone is too polite to say anything but Revy has really nasty BO. She wants everyone to smell it and that's why she wears sleeveless shirts nearly all the time.
And see there, a person who said that the dub is horrible has already five thumbs down, so please, go watch your fucking american cartoons with original dub and no need to read anything. I mean, that´s really immature to bash other´s comments only if they´re not the same as yours. Different opinions are good, being a fucking jerk isn´t. And if you give this thumbs down, it only proves that you´re denying every bit of sense I´m trying to put in your head and makes you seem even more stupid. END.
I think that person has 6 thumbs down because he made an unintelligent comment, not because people dislike his opinion. First of all he didn't give onereason as to why the dubs are bad, he just said they were bad. Secondly he insulted the voice actors which was uncalled for from someone voicing their opinion.
Well, read some of the comments, it´s not about intelligence. Just as stupid comments praising the dub can get many thumbs up, so you see, the problem is somehwere else. I´ve gotten thumbs down and for gods sake, I really believe that I have been very reasonable and I have reasoned my comments if appropriately asked. Majority of the people here are from US I believe, and there mny shows aren´t subbed. But it doesn´t make the dub actually good, I think that many people are being un-honest here.
Personally I like both, dubb more because I speak english on a regular basis. After the reading the manga, which is the true source of originality, I find Revy's Japanese voice is just a bit to laid back for my taste, still good. I find the dub is a little more crazy, and in the manga, Revy can be both laid back and crazy. I guess you can never have perfect VO, just really good ones. Its a matter of prospective and how you picture the characters voices through the manga.
Well I can´t really get into that reason because I don´t speak either japanese or englih regularly, because neither is my language. My opinion about Revy´s voice... Well in english, I don´t know, to me she just sounds very fake, the acctress wants to sound tough, but just... doesn´t. = / I don´t know if the japanese voice is perfect either, but it fits Revy very well in my opinion, at least it didn´t catch my ears in a bad way like this does.
I agree with this entirely, Revy is fairly nonchalant, in a crazy short of way, about what she does so I thought the laid back voice fitted her, but my god was her occasional english line good awful. The english dub isn't bad by any means but I just prefer the japenese. Also Dutch with a deeper voice suited his character very well, kinda shaft/ Samuel L. Jackson style, real cool and in control. Don't get me wrong I love english dubs but they really nailed it the first time around.
I loathe the asinine otaku reasoning that "if it's English, it automatically sucks; if it's Japanese, it's gold." That's just stereotypical bias and elitism. It shows that there's no thought or basis in that statement, just mindless conformity because there are many good dubs if one bothers to look. I traditionally watch almost all anime in english and japanese and maintain an open mind when watching both. It's all a matter of preference, not which is superior because that's pure subjectivity.
I can't understand why people are bashing the english dub, I think its amazing and one of the strongest anime eng dubs i've heard. And i've been a Black Lagoon fan since the begining.
Agreed there. At first I thought Revy's voice was too feminine, but when the more intense dialogue takes place and after episode 3, the voice actress really came into her own as a suitable Revy. Rock sounds okay, albeit he makes Rock sound a little younger than he is. Dutch is one of those exceptions where I prefer a character dubbed than subbed.
Well, you have a point there, and actually even Revy should basicly speak english, she´s chinese-american. But, the original voices are more fitting. Also, why I don´t see reading as a problem, here in Finland, damn, almost 100% of shows I watch are subbed, because finnish shows are kinda sucky. xD For someone, it might be hard to read them, for me it´s harder to listen almost. :D That doesn´t change the fact that I still actually like original voices more. Can´t compare to other dubs though...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hmm, especially Revy´s sound was rather bad in this, sounded so basic and no attitude at all compared to the japanese voice. I didn´t really like the rest either. Probably because I´ve seen this serie with japanese voices, and I loved them. Overall, I almost hate anime with english voices, because english isn´t what japanese people speak, and there´s always the subtitles, so... = /
Japanese can't do black voices. This dub shows the one thing that the original voices can not replicate. I liked that dudes voice, he sounded like a real Black man.
This anime one of those rare ones that doesn't sound horrible when dubbed.

@Hime11550, except for their Higurashi dub. LOL, I wasn't too fond of it, then again, those voices are hard to imitate. The closest ones were Shmion.

ROCKING DUBBING!
abhinav1booyaka 2 years ago 4
this is probably the best dub ever. the only thing that would have made it perfect is if every member of hotel moscow had a russian accent. then it would have been perfect
GOODPLAYA20 2 years ago 67
@GOODPLAYA20 Try giving all the japanese characters japanese accents too.
It all sounds way too american
englandinacan 11 months ago
@GOODPLAYA20 and if Chang had a chinese accent. but that might take away from his badassness. Also, it's funny how Rock's the only member of Lagoon Company who's born and bred from a different country. Revy's Chinese American but from New York City, Dutch is African American probably from the State, and Benny's a white guy from Florida (i think that's the state he mentions).

meh my view on this is that ppl should watch the japanese version. not becouse im saying that the americans "dubbers" are bad, but becouse voice action in japan is a HUGE thing, its a huge marced for it, and therfore people are better to it. japan just have voice acting like americans have acting in movies. take in some culture! read the english text :D
kattyen 2 years ago
This series makes absolutely no sense if you watch it in Japanese because 95% of the time the characters are speaking English. In fact, the last arc is the only place where the characters are actually speaking Japanese (apart from a few parts of episodes 1 and 2). Black Lagoon isn't just easier to follow when dubbed; it just plain makes sense.

Revy = Bad Ass!

RESULT: WELL DONE DUB!
XTREEMMAK 2 years ago 3

If you watch this anime all the way through, you'll realize that pretty much everyone in the show is speaking English, but instead of putting subtitles all the way through it, the creators decided it would be better to just create the illusion that they're speaking Japanese. The English dub will make more sense since they'll actually be speaking English.
phoofaphant 3 years ago 7
no its implied that they are speaking english. its from japan initialy japanese viewers so of course its gonna be in japanese.

All dubs suck major ass. This one's no different. The English voice actor for Dutch doesn't have a deep/harsh enough voice to compare to the original and the one doing Revy is too smooth/sexy sounding, not rugged/guttural enough to let the bad girl shine like she's supposed to.
This clip failz.

There is no sub form of Black Lagoon, it just does not exist. The dub was so superior that it caused the Japanese audio to simply stop existing.

JACOBDDIXON13 3 years ago
I like it, the dub.
Vancouver dubs tend to be really good though.

It's actually a really fucking good dub!
This and Hellsing are the only 2 animes with a REALLY good dub done by REALLY good voice actors, who do it because they like it and they enter into their character's parts, that's why it sounds cool.
AliProjectUberAlles 3 years ago
It is rather good. But I still love Japanese voices 99% of the time. The ONE TIME I liked English Dubs, truly, was FMA. Hellsing was ok too.
NickyDahl 3 years ago
Toatally agree with you. Plus it makes more sense in english. All of the characters except for Rock , his old company and the Washmine group, are of some other nationality that is not japanese. Like hellsing, the original creator (he said so in an interview)and the series itself is intended to be in english but the japanese is just there for the audience.

TheOtus 3 years ago 2
No, being a person who is both sub and dub fan, I can safely say that most people do *not* watch dubs just because they don't enjoy reading. Some do, but most don't, so I would appreciate that you do not carelessly generalize like that about dubbers because it is a somewhat ignorant thing to do. Most [eople like dubs because they want to experience a different interpretation of the same character. Not inaccurate, but to express a part of the character that the Japanese dub may fail to express.
Chrno34 3 years ago
TheOtus 3 years ago 2
No, I blame those who exhibit an annoying superiority complex against those who love dubs and treat them like heretics for doing so, thank you very much. If you like anime in sub and you have a real *valid* reason for disliking dub, great. When it comes to Sub vs Dub, I mostly go by which sounds appropriate to me when I read the original material(the manga). And in my opinion, both japanese and english VA represent different facets of the characters' personality that are both found in the manga.
Chrno34 3 years ago
Oh, this isn't about bashing the original VAs, it's about those who come in to bash the english with for not justifiable cause or reason. I don't necessarily approve of it either, but it you want to be truly objective, it's same type of behavior several times over with the Japanese sub threads when they say they like the dub better. So, try to look at it from two perspectives instead of acting like the role of the victim because it's far more vicious and bigoted on the other side of the fence.
Chrno34 3 years ago
I´m not acting like a victim (though I am that, all my messages have thumbs down for no reason), and I´m not thinking myself as a better person than someone who likes dubs. I know that some people do this though. People can like subs, I have nothing against that. But myself, I watch with subs because I respect the original voices and I want to experience it as it was meant to be experienced. I can easily read subs, I have no need to even try subs. And lets add that I´ve heard only bad subs.
TheOtus 3 years ago
There you go. You don't persecute those who like dubs out of bias and have legitimate reason for disliking dubs, but others do. These are the people that repulse me and others, and are becoming far too common in anime fandom lately. That's where my issues lie.
Chrno34 3 years ago
Yeah, I see. I´m against those people too. But I fail to see the whole point of dubbing, as to my eyes, it´s like pissing on someone´s work, not a possibility to "experience a different interpretation". Subtitles are made that people from different countries can enjoy the show. Whole issue wouldn´t exist if shows have never been dubbed, or vice versa of course. I just see subbing as a better option. I want to see the show as the creator wanted it to be. Because of this, I put sub always first.
TheOtus 3 years ago
Of course, "How the creator wanted it to be" is too broad a concept since it's conjecture of whether or not they have any actual say about the animation of their work. For example, Watsuki Nobuhiro, the author of Rurouni Kenshin, didn't like the Japanese voice for Kenshin since it sounded too feminine and he stated that he wanted Kenshin to sound more "neutral". The creator of El Hazard also personally stated that he thought the English dub was better than the Japanese version.
Chrno34 3 years ago
So, The japanese creators don't necessarily view the american counterparts of characters as bastardizations(Unless it's 4kids doing the dubbing since they *intentionally* butcher the original anime so horrendously, Anime studios no longer allow them to license their franchise outside of Japan).
Chrno34 3 years ago
Well you have a point there, but I hope you also understood my point none the less.
TheOtus 3 years ago 2
Perfectly.

TheOtus 3 years ago
And see there, a person who said that the dub is horrible has already five thumbs down, so please, go watch your fucking american cartoons with original dub and no need to read anything. I mean, that´s really immature to bash other´s comments only if they´re not the same as yours. Different opinions are good, being a fucking jerk isn´t. And if you give this thumbs down, it only proves that you´re denying every bit of sense I´m trying to put in your head and makes you seem even more stupid. END.
TheOtus 3 years ago
I think that person has 6 thumbs down because he made an unintelligent comment, not because people dislike his opinion. First of all he didn't give onereason as to why the dubs are bad, he just said they were bad. Secondly he insulted the voice actors which was uncalled for from someone voicing their opinion.
airforcetrooper 3 years ago
Well, read some of the comments, it´s not about intelligence. Just as stupid comments praising the dub can get many thumbs up, so you see, the problem is somehwere else. I´ve gotten thumbs down and for gods sake, I really believe that I have been very reasonable and I have reasoned my comments if appropriately asked. Majority of the people here are from US I believe, and there mny shows aren´t subbed. But it doesn´t make the dub actually good, I think that many people are being un-honest here.
TheOtus 3 years ago
Personally I like both, dubb more because I speak english on a regular basis. After the reading the manga, which is the true source of originality, I find Revy's Japanese voice is just a bit to laid back for my taste, still good. I find the dub is a little more crazy, and in the manga, Revy can be both laid back and crazy. I guess you can never have perfect VO, just really good ones. Its a matter of prospective and how you picture the characters voices through the manga.
airforcetrooper 3 years ago
Well I can´t really get into that reason because I don´t speak either japanese or englih regularly, because neither is my language. My opinion about Revy´s voice... Well in english, I don´t know, to me she just sounds very fake, the acctress wants to sound tough, but just... doesn´t. = / I don´t know if the japanese voice is perfect either, but it fits Revy very well in my opinion, at least it didn´t catch my ears in a bad way like this does.
TheOtus 3 years ago
I agree with this entirely, Revy is fairly nonchalant, in a crazy short of way, about what she does so I thought the laid back voice fitted her, but my god was her occasional english line good awful. The english dub isn't bad by any means but I just prefer the japenese. Also Dutch with a deeper voice suited his character very well, kinda shaft/ Samuel L. Jackson style, real cool and in control. Don't get me wrong I love english dubs but they really nailed it the first time around.
fergs103 3 years ago
I loathe the asinine otaku reasoning that "if it's English, it automatically sucks; if it's Japanese, it's gold." That's just stereotypical bias and elitism. It shows that there's no thought or basis in that statement, just mindless conformity because there are many good dubs if one bothers to look. I traditionally watch almost all anime in english and japanese and maintain an open mind when watching both. It's all a matter of preference, not which is superior because that's pure subjectivity.
Chrno34 3 years ago
dutch sounds blacker in japanese. lol.
lustfullGREED 3 years ago 2
I can't understand why people are bashing the english dub, I think its amazing and one of the strongest anime eng dubs i've heard. And i've been a Black Lagoon fan since the begining.
airforcetrooper 3 years ago
Agreed there. At first I thought Revy's voice was too feminine, but when the more intense dialogue takes place and after episode 3, the voice actress really came into her own as a suitable Revy. Rock sounds okay, albeit he makes Rock sound a little younger than he is. Dutch is one of those exceptions where I prefer a character dubbed than subbed.
Everyone else in the dub is fantastic.
