@uncleambient I actually think Gary Moore did the lead guitar on this one. It says so in the new expanded edition of "Shades", where some remixes were included, among them this song. Those were all made in 1977, by Phil, Gary, and Midge Ure.
Classic. Thanks for posting. A lot of people are not too familiar with the Eric Bell era, which I think is a pity. There is a lot of great poetry in Phil's lyrics from that time.
The original version of this song was released on their second album 'Shades of a Blue Orphanage'. This version with the extra guitar on it I think is only available on this compilation album.
Hi Jason. I do have that track yes. Check my channel and type it into the search bar on my videos. I have around 3 versions including the official release. Enjoy & thanks!
This is not "Version 2" but "Version 1" This song was written about Lynott's grandmother and first appeared on 1972's Shades of a Blue Orphanage. The other "Sarah" included on Black Rose wasn't written until his daughter was born several years later.
Hi bud. To clear things up, listen to Version 1, it is the stripped down original version on Shades of a Blue Orphanage. This song was an updated version so it is called Version 2 because it has an overlayed extra guitar track and was done at a later time. I have Version 1 in my channel check it out. Thanks for the comment!
It sounds like it was very inspired by Irish culture..... Philip drew inspiration from people and places the world over. He could just as easily write about Texas (Cowboy Song).....Brilliant.
wow i thought i was the greatest thin lizzy fan ever and i never heard this song before thank god for the internet and wow was i wrong to the ppl who posted this song
Any Lizzy fan is the greatest fan ever buddy :). Really glad you appreciate the fine music they made. This is a pretty 'rare' song in their catalogue as its so gentle which Lizzy wasn't really known for. Keep rocking :D!
I couldnt agree more...any FAN is the greatest fan..And i allways think what??when people talk about how underrated Thin Lizzy was, they obviously didnt grow up in my neighbourhood.I am 40,and have been listening to Lizzy, since i was 14,and i have had alot of their vinyls, sadly allso alot of girlfriends;),where i left them behind,i even HAD:( pirattapes and what not, some pretty good stuff, made by the soundcrews. And i still discover songs i havent heard before, and do i feel blessed.Great post.THX
saw thin lizzy live several times from about 1977/78. even met phil lynott in person after winning a competition on local radio. still a fan all these years later, but I have still got all my albums - 2 copies of some of them - I won them too
i love too see people posting about how it dont matter if u dont know the band inside out it the fact that u are a fan that counts in stead of bitching nice post mate and im the same never heard it befor but its awesome. :D
I bought Shades of the Blue Orphanage from a guy at art school. This track is so tender, I believe it is written for Philip's Grandmother. I have since grown to love Philip's music and the long-lasting enigma of Thin Lizzy
I like the "other" (alternate or version 2 perhaps) version of this song without the guitar/strings (or whatever that sound is) on top of Phil Lynott's voice....
Hey sbyrne1 ... Yes I stand corrected. I got my wires crossed ... thought i was commenting on the other Sarah track ...D'oh !! .lol !
What a great man and Thin Lizzy awsome band. I saw Lizzy in London 1975 supporting Status Quo at the Great British Musical Festival which lasted to nights. You also had Bad Company and some others. But Lizzy overtook them all soon after that ! see ur a big fan !
It's very easy to get them mixed up bud dont worry :) Man you actually saw Lizzy during their early years??Thats incredible... its rare to see people who have actually seen them before '75. Any requests just ask man... keep rockin!!
Dislike this old shit

Californiway, I was at about fifteen Lizzy concerts when I was at college in Ireland. They were magnificent.
When Phil sang this song which is doubly devoted, daughter and I believe a girlfriend there was absolute silence.
So sad that he died so young (35-36) from the evils of heroin.

its a bit funny that he did 3 version this son the first to is for his grandmother and the therd is for his daughter.
