  • Thats great new, this means I can throw my limiter screws in the bin as they obviously only have decorative purpose. Thanks, my bike is now lighter by .000000001 of a microgram.

  • @mrwasbesonders I take back my last comment, this dude is good, you need to watch the whole series of videos to get the whole picture.

  • WARNING! AGREE THIS NOT CORRECT, DO NOT DO IT. Use the limiter screws on the mechanism to set the top and bottom limitations so that the chain does not run OFF the sprockets. The barrel adjuster is used to adjust the shift!!!

  • @BuddLightbrain

In a derailleur's life, I use the high and low limit screws about 3 times at most. Once when it is new, twice if I ever replace a cassette or crankset, and perhaps a third time if I ever severely knock it out of alignment. The rest of the time, barrel adjustment is perfectly fine for this level of FINE TUNING. This guy does another video that deals with low and high limits, so you really shouldn't be trying to scare people. They'll have more chance of success trying this first.

  • @BuddLightbrain

Tension adjustment, as seen here, is in 99% of cases performed AFTER a rear derailleur is already installed and set up. That, believe it or not, is what the barrel adjuster is actually for. Cable stretch will cause noisy or insufficient shifting, as also witnessed here. Cable stretch does not necessarily mean your limit screws are out of whack, it means that you need to re-adjust the cable tension. There's really no need to start from scratch with your limit screws.

  • @GhibliFan1 No kidding! and the point being that has not already being covered is...?

  • @BuddLightbrain

My point was that your bold shock horror headline telling people not to take notice of this video was, IMO, unwise. Now people have two alternative view points to consider... public forum at its best, empowering mankind to make informed decisions.

  • @GhibliFan1 It is just bold, "Shock Horror", is a personal perception and why just state the obvious!

  • i have ant xt shadow and dont have that barrel

  • Fuck it..i will just take ma bike to the shop

  • As mcv99e99 said this is bad advice, if the chain comes off its not the cable that should be adjusted!

  • thanks you solved my problem! great video.

  • Of all the vids explaining this procedure, this man, Mr. Gonzalez, doe the best job, by far. Thanks Mr. Gonzalez!!

  • HELPPP

    MY SRAM X0

when my gears are able to to make the lowest gear its not possible to go down to the higest gear??? vice versa ??

  • Very nice.

  • Very helpful, thanks!

  • For people complaining about the limiting screws or whatever, he covers that in "step 6" the advanced version.

  • @DazarGaidin

thats crap, it should be up front, and the way he changes gear to shpow it jumping off and trashing the frame with the chain is pretty poor in my book

  • The tip about using the rear barrel saved the day for me. Thanks!!

  • THANX THIS VIDEO HELP ME A LOT

  • I find this guy to be the best. His non fussy approach is commendable. In this video where he sets the chain on the middle cog and then adjusts the tension, I fine tuned it by reducing the tension till the the chain started to just make a noise. Then added the tension till it also started to make a noise. Whilst moving the tension I counted the clicks of the barrel adjuster,( in my case it was 6 clicks) I then reduced it by 3 click and the gear runs totally quiet.

    Try his brake setup. Tops!

  • Does it matter what cog the front derailleur is in when adjusting the rear?

  • Superb thanks my bike was jumping up a gear under load very annoying...

  • he basically showed that the barrel adjuster is what you need to adjust to keep your chain to shift to the proper gear, sometimes people that get walmart bikes have chains that dont shift to the proper gear shown on their shifter, this vid would help them alot, people sometimes think its the Limit screws are the ones that change how the bike indexes its gears, nope its the barrel adjuster the limit screws just adjust how far out and far in the chain will go.

  • this shit is fantastic wanking material

  • lol

  • last year i flew off the bike at 40kmh or something, because the chain got stuck between the frame and the 8th gear.

now i know how to prevent another crash

    thx

  • your a life saver mate..... cheers

  • Thanks for this

  • This tech tip helped me resolve a shifting issue, thanks.

  • thanks alot

    I didn't know that!

  • Santa Fe Mountain Sports needs to stick to winter sports

  • This is not correct. The barrel adjuster is used to adjust shifts between gears, not to prevent the chain from jumping off the cassette in the highest and lowest gears. Use the limit screws first to ensure the derailleur can't push the chain into the spokes or the frame and then adjust cable tension.

  • +1 the high limit screw had to be out to far for that to happen

  • @mcv99e99 This guy knows what he is doing.

  • @mcv99e99 This is correct. He clearly states the purpose of the video is to demonstrate how to adjust the rear derailleur so the chain does not hesitate or skip gears, by adjusting the barrel. He doesn't mention once that the video is about how to stop the chain from jumping off the cassette (which the limit screws do).

He works in a bike shop, so I think he knows exactly what he's talking about.

  • thanx 4 savin me money takin my bike 2 the shop,

  • very nice of People to give it ( "knowledge") away for free.

  • freemusicblogg you bastard. Hes only learning. Now who's the retard?

  • Cheers mateee

  • thanks!

  • Thanks!

  • i am an absolute noob at bikes. but i gotta questions.

do i need a derailleur if my bike cant shift gears?

cause it doesnt have the gear shifter on the handle bar. i was just wondering if i needed the derailleur?

  • No.

  • wow thanks a lot. i dont like having to go to the local shop for help

  • Does the brand of the Gears matter?

i dont have shimano gears on my bike.

  • they should all have the same components unless your bike is from like 1685

  • Shimano is not compatible with Sram, Sram is 1:1 action, way better then Shimano if you ask me. I have'em.

  • i have a mongoose xr-75 that has sram and shimano too

  • Very helpful, you saved me a tip to my asshole bike dealer... thankyou

  • I don't have any problems shifting up or down, but my chain keeps skipping as if it's trying to shift up or down on its own. For example, as I'm pedaling, out of nowhere I get a big grinding "crack". What is this? The hangar is okay, and the chain and cassette are fairly new.

  • Meaning you need to adjust your rd to the correct setting

  • Could be a tight link in the chain if it just jumps out every few revs but probably you need to do a full adjust - the 7 minute video done by the English guy explains it pretty well.

  • Good clear advice,Thanks John....

  • good advice

    thanks

  • But I don't have a barrel adjuster. I have an M772 Shadow. Can you make a video on how to adjust&install the Shadow?

  • So do I loosen or tighten the barrel(mine is on the click shifter not the actual derailleur) when I have a hesitant gear shift?

  • To stop the chain from getting stuck in between frame and Cog you should adjust the Adjuster screws.... NOT THE BARREL!

  • it´s true, there are two adjuster screws.

  • nice point man ur right!!

  • Adjuster screws don't exist?

  • very very nice video and good explantion

  • Thank you so much for that. Saved me having to go to a bike shop.

    Thanks again

  • thanks - very helpful

  • when the chain jumped off the cassette, you should adjust the barrel, you shoudl losen off the d-cable, and adjust the limit screws

  • Thanx dude , !

  • terrific! I just needed to see this.

    Thanks a lot!

  • Thanks for sharing some helpful cycling tips!

  • why is the rear disc rotor not spinning?

  • Basically a good video. It would have been helpful if you had just mentioned how to deal with hesitant shifts.

  • Thanks for posting this. Please post more bike repair vids if you have them. Im gonna go ride my penny farthing now.
