  • Anyone else feels like this kinda sounds like malkmus is rapping?

  • malkmus was a blaster, if he would have played with others at his level he would have been even better. it may have made him care. he clearly did not enjoy singing but wrote such interesting lyrics (which would suggest that he enjoyed that part) that it probably made him go through with the chore

  • this is what i call ultra slacker funk. sm is really good at nailing those pavement-y riffs regardless of tuning.

  • guitar wizards of the future!!!

  • This, 'Embassy Row' and 'Passat Dream' are my favourite songs on 'Brighten The Corners'. Hmm, probably 'Fin' as well.

  • I'll never get over this band- this is one of their best songs....

Malkmus is a genius and he couldnt care less- he's playing with a bouncy ball during a concert!!

This is as good as it gets!

  • dumbdumbdumbdumb

  • @vanisherg well thats usualy how old pavement songs are performed. they usualy goof around without tryin the same way they do in studio. you should listen to stereo on the conan obrian show

  • @number1lettera while blue hawaiian nails it i thought stereo on conan was very flat and borderline tediously goofy

  • malkmus is hilarious, he fucks up the lyrics at 2:20 but he just looks like "watthefuck?" one of my fav pave songs

  • Steve makes it look so effortlessly. Where's the whammy bar? Thanks for this footage.

  • Holy shit look at what Stephen Malkmus does at 0:41-0:45 that was awesome!!

  • Yeah bad ass. Not enough frontmen play with bouncy balls on stage.

  • Where can I get the DVD of this performance?

  • Why wasn't Malkmus at that fender Jazzmaster 50th anniversary thing?! Then again, why wasn't Elvis Costello and Kevin Sheilds?

  • wine cooler is bester

  • anyone seen the palin vid?

  • I've been in a pavement stage for about 17 years now.

  • yeah. been in the pavement stage for about 14-15 years now.

  • great band. Very original. What independent music is all about!

  • Lol I agree in a sense. Not alot of bands come close to their greatness.

But when I told me friend Frank that I like Pavement, he said "Oh. So you're in the Pavement stage huh? Everyone has their Pavement stage. Don't worry, you'll grow out of it." lol.

I guess the next step is hardcore punk!

    JK!

  • i've been in my pavement stage for quite a while now...

  • I hope I never leave my pavement stage. Something tells me I won't.

  • The next step is douchery. Do not leave your Pavement stage!

  • Ten years in the pavement stage for me :)

  • if u like pavement ud prob dig tapes n tapes...

  • i think malk's jazzmaster sounds terrible.

  • Do you mean that sick fuzz tone during the solo? I like that.

  • its because of the single coil pickups he uses. jangly sounding.

  • If I like Pavement, what other bands would I like?

    :D

  • The singer kinda sounds like the talking heads singer, maybe you should check them out

    And perhaps the B-52's

  • The Pixies, Fuck, Sebadoh, the New Pornographers, and perhaps Wilco.

Ignore the douchebag who recommended the B-52's.

  • Dinosaur Jr.

  • Tindersticks

  • mate if you like pavement chances are the bar is set pretty high. i think after pavement the only music i can tolerate is stephen malkmus and the jicks, and preston school of industry, just because.

pavement being a band you like is a fucking curse, everything else sounds shit.

  • Do you see this video streched when you go fullscreen?

    or it's just me?

  • i like the way they end it

  • my favorite pavement song!!!

  • magic!

  • I'ma go with american, I dont think the CIJ's fretboards get that pretty

  • does anyone have any idea whether stephen's jazzmaster is vintage or CIJ? Since he's started using it in 1997, it obviously couldn't be an american reissue, which came out in 1999, right?

  • Does anyone know what "distortion" effect Stephen is using during the solo? I want whatever pedal he's using!

  • It's really a Jazzmaster thing I've found, I can't get that crazy stinging tone with any other guitar. I crack up the gain on the amp then use a boss distortion in combination with it and from the bridge pup you can get that sound. You can get similar sound from a really hot P90 but it's still not as cool as from the Jazzmaster. I'd like to experiment with a couple of Proco Rats... =)

  • Sounds like a Blue Box by MXR. It's an octiver/fuzz in one. It is sort of an all or nothing pedal: when it's on you really know it. It's about as subtle as a smack in the face, but very cool when used tastefully - like here. Jimmy Page is a fan, too.

  • I would bet a healthy sum that the pedal he's using during those fuzzy solos is a zvex fuzz factory. he's been known to use one and that tone, in all its octavey weirdness, is totally fuzz factory-ish.

  • It's actually a Lovetone Cheese Source fuzz. They're a British company. Their pedals are pretty sought after now.

Plus, you have to realize, the ZVex Fuzz Factory wasn't released until 2004...

  • And when I said Lovetone's "Cheese Source", I meant their fuzz that predated it, the "Big Cheese". Malkmus used a Big Cheese.

  • the fuzz factory was released in 1995. zack vex even says on his website that "I have had the same battery in my prototype since 1995." this concert took place in 1997, after the release of brighten the corners. so it could be a very well be a fuzz factory. it sure sounds like one to me.

that being said, it could still be big cheese. you're right that malkmus used one. i guess i am not familiar enough with the big cheese to definitively say that it is not one. but really, who cares?

  • Good catch with the FF release. I just figured it was the Big Cheese since he is documented to have used it. Of course, I have almost no familiarity with the BC, so you could be right.

Malkmus was kind of mysterious pedal-wise. I think it's generally believed that by this point his board consisted of (unsure of order):

Boss TU-2, ProCo Rat, Lovetone Big Cheese, Lovetone Meatball, Crybaby Wah

It is also rumored that he was fiddling with a Digitech Whammy on the Terror Twilight tour.

  • Digitech whammy nice,, like brendan small or wut?

saw him use that cheese w.jix in 05 but no cheese in 08!

  • zvex fuzz factory.

  • Favourite Pavement song.

  • anyone notice malkmus' smooth tricks with that small ball? begins at 00:39...

    sick jamz

  • yess, pretty cool..

  • hahah yeah that's mad as, i thought he was just kicking air....

  • I think the vocals are great and I like the way I Malkmus personalizes each performance, not to mention the way he can play a guitar. The song rocks and I like it better than the album version!

  • I agree! The drums on this one are spot on too!

  • be silent both of you and listen to pavement

  • yes.

    very good

hey look, wouldnt favorite you without reason.

  • all my favorite singers couldn't sing

    DB

  • ? You guys have some serious tone problems. Haha. I know I know, you like this kind of music, but c'mon anyone can sing this lafoigbngjkf;ga haha

  • The list of great bands/artists with voices that don't match conventional tastes is long and deep: Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Lou Reed, Howln Wolf, etc. Not a bad list of artistic geniuses.

Pavement was simply one of the most influential bands of their time. Too bad people with closed minds like you can't stick around long enough to see it. Let me guess you're an American Idol fan? Clay Aiken is your cup of tea. Get with it dude.

  • Haha take it easy ms emotional I'm just saying that he ain't got no skills in vocals. But if you talk about variety or the art of the song then maybe u have an argument. Any type has an argument if people like it.I'm just saying that there is no way in hell this guy can even touch a song a person like Clay can. Haha. Clay would just have to sing flat and off tune to sing this type. He might not have the look though haha

  • You haven't got a clue. There is a big difference between people that approach music as an art (pavement, dylan, etc) and lame pop singers (like Aiken) that are merely entertainers. There is no substance to Aiken. BOTTOM LINE is AIKEN SUCKS. Regardlesss of his vocal chords. And it's NOT about looks. It's about substance. Pavement's got it, acts like Aiken don't.

  • Bottom line is Pavement's cannot sing. Hahaha.

  • And you are an idiot who makes references to Clay Aiken as a standard for judging artistic merit!! Get a life buddy! I feel sorry for you.

  • You still don't have an argument with what I'm saying. All I have been saying is that Pavement can't sing for nothing. I didn't insult his style, nor did I say Clay's style is better. Pavement = bad vocals. If you disagree, check your ears. haha

  • It's real simple: you are still an idiot and your original point ("anyone can sing this, etc.") is a false premise. Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Pavement, Velvet Underground, Tom Waits, etc. aren't just anybody. They are ground breaking artists that stand the test of time. Their voices are an essential part of their craft. This NOT about style, it's about originality, substance. Most other acts just copy tried and true formulas (e.g., Pearl Jam, Clay Aiken, etc.).

  • Are you stupid or something? Why the heck are you still arguing about essential craft or originality? I already said it ain't about that. I already said I wasn't taking Clay's side on that, nor dissing Pavement. I'm saying Pavement can't handle a difficult vocal song. And it ain't about Clay. I'm talking Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston types of songs. Brah, you got no argument, I'm right just admit it.

  • Not as dumb you. Though I am glad to see you can actually say something other than Ha Ha Ha. As mckhs points out, not "pretty" does not equal bad. And pretty doesn't = good. You are judging by such conventional top 40 standards it's pathetic. I'll take Tom Waits all day over all those foolish pop acts you just mentioned (with the possible excpetion of Stevie Wonder in his prime).

  • pearl jam copies tried and true formulas? like what? dont even try to say nirvana... tell me one pearl jam songs that sounds like a nirvana song... they helped create alternative rock, man... one of the most original and respected bands out there... if anything pearl jam is one of the most copied bands in rock... im with you on the pavement stuff tho... but another point for your side of the pavement issue is that you dont have to sound pretty to sound awesome

  • You are such a fool I tell you. This is my last comment because you still don't get it. Read good you idiot! I'm purely talking the vocal talent! Not voice to part of craft you fool. Sure if Stevie wonder sang one of Pavement's songs it would sound different. But as far as the vocal range and ability, this song is fairly simple and practically anyone CAN sing it. Pavement CANNOT sing a challenging Stevie Wonder song! Anyone else please tell this dumb ass to go to school.

  • Calm down fool. You are the idiot who was using Clay Aiken as the reference! He ain't no artist, be it vocal "ability" or songwriting talent. I only brought in the Stevie Wonder reference to at least make it a more reasonable argument. Glad you agree with me!!

  • ok... hold on... bad vocals are basically vocals that disagree with the sound or style of the music being played... these vocals seem to compliment the music... just because your voice isnt pretty doesnt mean its not great

  • And bottom line for you buddy: you don't know how to write. "Pavement's" cannot sing. Are you in third grade?

Pavement still rocks and you are stupid!!!!!

  • hahahaha

  • troll vs. troll feeder...

  • Stephen Malkmus rapping = omfg.

  • Rapping? No, it sounds more like he was trying for Roger Daltrey a la "My Generation" in parts. This is a friggin awesome performance of this song, I think I might even like it better than the album version

  • prob my fave pavement song

  • "The Tones are grouped in clusters" = Brilliance

  • bum cheeks. nice nice nice.

  • pavement

  • this song is GENIOUS!

  • The master of crazy guitar tones.

  • i feel like they are some pretty laid-back dudes

  • i love this band thankyou!!
