  • Absolutely brilliant track. Great music will always last

  • must be getting old.. got it wrong on my last post but here is the 1957 line up of the Temperance seven... C.Howard trumpet/cornet.. P.McDowell trombone..A.S.Cooper clarinet..P.Harrison banjo,..C.Bowles piano.... B.Innes G.J.P.K. Joe Clark clarinet..Clifford Bevan Tuba........

    hope this helps

  • the line up i gave was that for the 1961 recording of Pasadena the same line up was going in the mid 60's when i use to regularly go and see them, into the late 60's early 70's many changes occurred, now is this the first line up.... NO I dont even know id i have the 1956/8 line up at home [on holiday at present] but i do remember cephus on vocals and paul on the grand jazz percussion kit... will have a look when i get home,

  • This was the second version released on 45rpm record, It embraced a change of key after the vocal. The earlier and more rare version did not have the change of key. I happen to have both versions. I must have played this many hundreds of times with The Vintage Syncopators.- Mike Higham

  • at the time for me rock/roll was king, but this found a place in my heart, still does

  • Loved these as a boy,what was the B side ?

  • GOD! I love this!!!

  • I left school in 1961 but up to the beginning I did a paper round from Clough's Newsagents on Princess Parade next door to the Cresta Picture House in Fallowfield... I can recall this record very well at the time..

  • sorry finger against keyboard problems..

so to complete the line up.

Alan Swainstone Cooper, clarinet, base clarinet, soprano sax and phonofiddle

    Franklyn B Paverty, Susaphone

    John Gieves-watson banjo and spoons

    Megaphone vocalist, [whispering] Paul McDowell

the only one i met again after the original band broke up was Cephas Howard at his pottery workshop on the Isle of Wight, I believe he then moved to France and had/has a thriving pottery/art shop there

  • @MrThebrickman : Was the line-up you've detailed the very first one? I used to have a book by Brian Mathew, dating from 1963, about the best-known trad jazz bands of the time, including the T7. The personnel he listed were as you give them, with the following differences:

(Count) Clifford [de] Bevan - piano

    Ray Whittome (for Philip Harrison)

Mr Paverty's real name apparently was Martin Fry. And I seem to recall that Alan Swainstone Cooper was also known as Henry MacHooter!

  • when a lad, I use to go to watch them every year [early June] at Dartford park band stand, [i think i was the youngest in the audience] their stage act was great as was their musicianship , the original line up was billed as..

Cephas Howard [Captain cashiered] trumpet & euphonium

    John R.

  • Eccentric, pure English class from beginning to end

  • The singer was always billed as "Vocal refrain by Mr Paul MacDowell"

  • A masterpiece - Singer's name please?

    Thanks for a great post.

  • Not On CD. Must Be Very Hot?

  • This brought a smile to my face! Thank you. I LOVE it!

  • I forgot to mention, this is my number one party piece. I sing it right through, at the drop of a hat , on any occasion. Maybe I will post myself performing the song at some point. Oh dear !!

  • These Guys were a senstation. They were accepted, back then, as "Pop Stars" on the one hand , and also full blown members of the more elite jazz scene on the other. i was around as a 19 year old "oik" ae the time and I have great memories of sreeing them live at several venues. Notably the Chinese zazz Club in Brighton, the Hayworth in Haywards Heath (I think) and the Downs Hotel in Hassocks (all in Sussex, by the way)

  • a stunning piece. thank you so much for posting this!

  • Absolute magic thanks. If anyone has this on vinyl, the Parlophone label I believe, the flip side "Sugar" would be well worth posting.

  • Harry, I've managed to get hold of both versions now. Thanks anyway.

  • Can you please tell me what album this is taken from? I have a version wherein Paul SINGS the line "where honey bees &c." -- but here, he SPEAKS it. I'd like to have them both.

    Thanks.

  • @PaulMagnussen I'm pretty sure I have the sung version on a 45rpm single. I have to find it! If you want a copy, send me a message via here and I'll then pass an email address.
