@fesinatorson - it's tradition because you only used to need to win 8 games i the playoffs to win the cup. Do you know how many legs an octopus has? 8! That's right! Good job! Each of the 8 legs represented one of the wins you needed to win the cup. Since the wings were perennial contenders the tradition stuck. I hope this has been an educational experience for you.
