  • Those contractions I hate them… no just kidding

    Thank you

  • When they lived in Singapore, they would go to the beach almost every day.

If they go back to Singapore, they will most likely go to the beach once again every day.

Does this make "would" the past of "will"?

Beyond this and the conditional examples, I can't see why "would" is the past of "will" necessarily.

    Ideas anyone? Comments?

  • @groundzerobuild

In "they would go to the beach," "would" is for an action that is repeated regularly in the past (habitual past) like "used to."

"Would" is not the past tense of "will."

Your second sentence is a real condition, so we say "will." If it were unreal, we would say "would."

"If they went back to Singapore, they would go to the beach" (but they aren't going back to Singapore).

  • hi teacher, when can I use would and will? can i use it interchangeably?

    Thanks

  • @groundzerobuild

In requests, they have the same meaning. We can say: "Will you help me?" or "Would you help me?" "Would" is a little more polite.

  • This is an excellent video, Prof. Stacy, now, how about doing the same topic adding negatives, I mean, contractions like these along with negative contractions, please.

  • @MAGNIUM

Thank you! Could you give me a few examples of what you mean?

  • @EnglishwithStacy Dear Prof. Hagen, Thank you for answering my comment. what I meant was negative contractions like: "don´t you" or "wasn´t it". I just ordered your "Sound advice" from amazon.com, it´s excellent!. However, what I really need the most is the listening companion of the book to do the exercises. Unfortunately, the audio format available is the old cassette tapes. My question is: do you have the audio in another format, like, CDs or Download? I hope you do. Thank you.

  • @EnglishwithStacy Dear Prof: Hagen, Thank you fro answering my comment. What I meant was contractions such as "don´t you" "wasn´t". Anyway, I just got your "Sound Advice" from Amazon. Excellent!!. I would love to complete the exersices. However, the audio is in cassete tapes. Question: do you have the listening part in CDs or Digital format?? I really hope for an affirmative answer!! Thank you!!

  • which is the proper English?Colour or color? Socks or sox? Organisations or Organizations? Underground or subway? Gas or petrol? Fall or Autumn? Candy or sweets? Cookie or biscuit? Centre or Center, Trash or rubbish?

  • @groundzerobuild

These are differences between British and American English -- it's not really a matter of which is more proper. The following are common to American English: color, organization, subway, gas, cookie, center, trash (we also say rubbish but not so frequently). In American English we say both Fall/Autumn, candy/sweets. "Sox" is informal speling for "socks" in American English.

  • Thanks a lot . It's very kind of you!!
