Or, the "Sponsor's Message" could have declared, "PARLIAMENT, the cigarette made a different way, with the filter that's in- 'recessed in', for flavor.......has brought you 'THE LONER'!". Incidentally, these closing credits fom the episode "The Vespers" (September 25, 1965).
"'GUNSMOKE' is next, on the CBS Television Network".
Yes, Philip Morris [Marlboro, Parliament, American Safety Razor division (Personna)] was the primary sponsor of the series. When "THE LONER" was cancelled in April 1966, they sponsored "THE FACE IS FAMILIAR" in the same time period for the rest of the season. "Sponsor's Message" at :39 was essentially a brief reminder to watch one of their other shows on CBS {i.e. "Be sure to see Shirley Booth as 'HAZEL'- Monday night, over most of these stations"- Philip Morris was her co-sponsor that season}.
@fromthesidelines I didn't know Philip Morris also owned a shaving concern...of course, this was before the big acquisitions for diversification by tobacco companies--Philip Morris buying Miller Brewing, R.J. Reynolds snapping up Nabisco Brands. In fact, a couple of years before this show aired, R.J. Reynolds purchased the company that made Hawaiian Punch.
I've remembered the theme tune for all these 45 years even though I've never seen The Loner since it left the network in 1966, when I was 11. It aired right before Gunsmoke. It was in many ways similar in general theme and style to Have Gun Will Travel (which had also aired right before Gunsmoke) and The Rebel. Good show, thanks.
One of my favorite westerns. I guess I'm glad it was so sadly overlooked. That big eared SOB from Texas took me away from the television right about the time the show was canceled and I didn't have much chance to watch t.v. while wearing a uniform.
