Sovereignty of Canada's north is not "everything". It is important, but not the highest priority issue in Canada's best interest. Foreign affairs and Canadian forces deployment in Afghanistan is much more important. Canada's continuing lack of climate change initiatives that will make a difference is more important. Partisanship aside, Harper has been really good at implementing policies that are best for Canada not what the propagandists want you to believe. the arts gaffe was a good example.
CBC did a good report on how Chretien/Martin and Harper define culture which, in the end, helps determine the allocation of money.
the diffference: Since Harper took office afts funding dropped from 3.34 billion to 3.29 billion. Maybe GST cut has something to do with it... or not?

Sovereignty of Canada's north is not "everything". It is important, but not the highest priority issue in Canada's best interest. Foreign affairs and Canadian forces deployment in Afghanistan is much more important. Canada's continuing lack of climate change initiatives that will make a difference is more important. The erosion of our health care system and the danger of 2 tier health care becoming prevalent is more important.
We should develop green energy rather than chase oil.

Sovereignty over the north is nothing compared to economic sovereignty. If we stick with Harper's economic road to deregulation and laissez faire economics, we will be selling the north passage to the US just to survive. Rbairos1, Nazi policies did not reflect anything that looks like the left-wing. Granted, the Nazis did intervene with big businesses, but this was to help gear them for their further expansion into Europe; a highly controlled war economy. In reality, private businessmen owned and controlled Germany's means of production. The "Charter of Labor" also gave total control over their workers. They abolished trade unions, the right to strike and collective bargaining; how can you call them "left wing"?

Hitlers 25 point program had clear socialist values. (Nationalization of industry, universal education and old age pension, universal health care, etc).
The fact that they converted their rise to power to a militaristic dictatorship does not change their early platform, or the fact they originally campaigned as a socialist party.

The implication of what Harper said about "ordinary people" was demeaning. The corollary of course is that only "extraordinary people" can appreciate the fun the joy and the learning that goes along with attending a party involving the arts. Any way you look at it...Harper is stereotyping artists and those who support them as "elitists. That's just not true.

No, the implication of what Harper said about ordinary people, is that they are not concerned about groups claiming to be underfunded when they know their funding has increased. Chopping half the sentence off isn't a valid form of paraphrasing.
If you want to make a claim that Harper is somehow being deceptive about funding than by all means speak your mind.

Complete BS. Harper has the best ideas for this country and they are based on common sense. Our so called "greatest" leaders in this country have been dictators but Harper has not even had a chance. If the only way that "artists" are making their money is through government money maybe it's time to examine that spending. That's what Harper was doing. Fewer Canadians voted period. It was the lowest voter turnout in history. Bottom line is we increased our amount of seats in almost every province. The only reason the Conservatives didn't get a majority was because of the proposed arts cuts hurting in Quebec. He didn't say he was for it he just said he wouldn't do it because of all the whining and complaining from the left.

It's true that that amount didn't vote Conservative this time. That doesn't mean they were "repulsed" away. Maybe they didn't vote. I'll say it again. Dude, accept reality; the vast majority of votes were NOT for a conservative party. They were divided between 4 left-of-center parties. The majority of Canada's population has always been predominently centrist, or slightly left of that and it ALWAYS will be. BTW, I don't want a 'leader' leading me, as he sees fit, according to his views. I want a "representative", implementing the will of the majority, while protecting minorities' rights. That's what "representative democracy" is all about.

The parody in no way suggests that Harper is Hitler, after all...Harper is only killing art, not human beings. But Harper appears to have an irrational streak. Or maybe not. Maybe he's just apealling to the 'kevins' of Canada. Harper DOES have disdain for the average Canadian - who - he says - does not really care all that much about art or artists or those things called 'galas'.

The actual quote is Harper claiming ordinary canadians do not care about groups claiming to be underfunded when they know their funding has increased. Funding for Arts + Multiculturalism has actually increased since the Liberals left in 2006. This trivialization of Hitler is based on a 2% cut, involving 6 programs of a 3 billion dollar annual budget.

Those on this thread who recoil at the sight of Hitler neither care about art, nor appreciate it. What they fail to see is that Adolf Hitler was a caricature, same as George W. Bush is. (I suspect they both killed about the same number of people...although perhaps Bush comes in second in that respect).
One is reminded of "The Producers"...a film by Mel Brooks. The film contained a playlet entitled "Springtime For Hitler". It was a very funny movie, which later became a Broadway hit.

Im not claiming all socialist groups become Nazis, or that the Nazis did not have many elements of right-wing extremism, but the National Socialist Germans Workers' Party is an ironic choice to parody a Canadian right-of-centre political group.

The Nazi party (much like neo-nazis) was an extremist right-wing party, not at all left-wing. Nationalism, productivism, elitism and ANTI-SOCIALISM all characterize the Nazis. The only thing that makes me angry is the use of hitler in relationship with the Canadian government. It is disrespectful to every vet in Canada that fought in the war and it is disrepectful to every Canadian because of the way you portray our prime minister.
