One of the two versions of this song that I like the best (and of course Sir Paul's). The other one is the stylish, crystal clear treatment by MamaSox. Ruby just had a special blend of passion and imagination. More women should cover this song.
I just found an 8 song black and white concert video of Ruby with Grey Ghost! Go to Wolfgangs Vault and type in Grey Ghost! live 9-11-75 at Winterland in San Francisco. AWESOME!!!
I met Ruby once or twice when she was playing around the south, in knoxville TN. I think one time when Blackfoot played there, one time with another band. She always got pulled up on stage to sing one or two, late 70s...She was precocious and coy....and to a young guy like me then, always a fantasy I could never have.....always loved the hair style.....awesome. Chicks who rock......RULE!
Ruby was the only person in Rock that I ever had the pleasure of meeting, and talking to. She was a wonderful person, and was taken from us far too soon. She will live on forever in our hearts!!
my ruby story: i tended bar at the jabberwocky in milwaukee every monday when she hosted the open jams~ later i moved to toledo~ got a job bartending in a club there~ soon after ruby moved back to toledo and was the house band every thursday~ we hung out together ALOT in toledo~
so blessed to have gotten to see and hear that much of her~ humbled to have called her 'friend'~
I had the pleasure of seeimg Miss Starr with BOA in the late 70's and she ROCKED ASS! Bought her album and still enjoy it. RIP Ruby Starr. I Love You.
She was FANTASTIC we didn't see her till the 80's in "Ruby Starr" with Robb, Mudd, Freddie, and Steve but oh man did we LOVE them and have a good time watched them all over the state of WI and partied with them too. Wish I would have seen her sooner, but I was already a very young pup in the 80's ;) RIP Ruby I think about you all the time!
Very sexist of me but I always that of her as a groupy hanging out with the band. My bad becuase she had a beautiful voice and i never knew. sounds like shes not with anymore too bad. this is a great version of a great song.
Ruby imprinted me! I just watched the "Shriner's Convention" video for the first time. Does anyone know who the cute redhead with the Ruby hairstyle is? I have to have more!
I was an espiring young bassist in the mid 70's... It was Don Kershner's "Rock Concert" that exposed me to all that was music back then... That's where I saw Ruby Starr for the first time... Caught her live show twice after that. I've recently taken the bass seat in a band in S/W Florida with female front person who is a little reminisent to me of Ruby... I'm come back to Ruby Starr's music for inspiration... RIP Ruby, you were ahead of your time...
I always felt that she was better than a lot of the singers. She sings the blues as well or better than Janis. She never got the notice which she deserved. I always wanted to hear her singing with the guess who.
i first met ruby very late one night in 1976 on the north shores of bull shoals lake outside the hardscrabble town of theadosia, missouri. we shared a little whiskey and talked for what seemed like hours. she was without a doubt the most talented singer i have ever known and the world lost a true treasure with her passing
@jlan1957 When I met her, the thing that stuck me the most was that Ruby seemed to stare right into my soul. I have never got that feeling from any other woman.
I played in a local rock band named Aggressor in Green Bay, Wi. in the 80's. We opened for Ruby and Grey Starr several times. Those were the good old days.
I saw her twice in California in '78?. She kicked her leg up and wasn't wearing panties. I saw a pic of that a year or so later in Playboy or Penthouse.
Also a former guitar player with BOA, Mike Martin was a good friend of mine. He was killed in a motorcycle wreck about 4 years ago.RIP Ruby and Mike!!!
@rocknrollphilip YES !! that is Tommy on drums...he was with black oak....later drumming with Pat Travers (crash & Burn Album) etc etc etc etc etc... :)
Too bad there is not more out there in the way of video's, seem to be very rare and hard to find....... we met in 1975, my last day of highschool.... Ruby and band got us in the club for 3 songs but also hung out before and after the show. I only got to see her perform one more time, 1976 with Black Oak...........
I think something like this version would be Crystal's best shot for making it stand out this week. As it so happens, Ruby Starr is from...Toledo, Ohio.
Ruby's version here is better than Jem's in my opinion.
We saw Ruby and Grey Ghost in Houston in 1981, I think. We went backstage to have them all sign their album. What I didn't expect was that Ruby's wide-eyed stare bored right into my soul! I have NEVER met anyone with such presence, like being smacked with a ball bat.
GOD, I LOVE HER! I was lucky enough to have seen her with Grey Ghost in a small club in Wrightsville Beach, NC, way back in the 70s. She was awesome. When she made her entrance, she did a cart wheel - in a short skirt and high heels! I miss you Ruby...
Great seeing her sing that song!! brings me back to when i brought her ticket for 7 bucks and a OZ. of columbian was 35 bucks!! was a great show for 7 dollars too on a bar at a lake
@dant1958 Yes ,when a nichol was 5$,a dime was 10$,and an O Z was 35$.1,2,3,4 fingers,ha,ha.Those were the days my friend,we thought they'ld never end........
Thank you for putting this vid back up I saw it awhile back and when I decided to put it in my playlist it was gone so I'm so glad you put it back on please keep it posted so we can hear it from time to time. She is awesome in Jim Dandy to the Rescue by Black Oak Ark
Hey pigpen - I just found this vid of Ruby yesterday - type Ruby Starr Band - Secrets of the Heart - Brat Stop great vid - Ruby in 80's with long earrings, eye makeup, spiffy outfit. Looks like the GreyStarr Band to me!
@deadlycamera A guy has uploaded several songs that he personally taped when she was working 'Vegas. These are poor recordings and available only on Google videos. Search "Ruby Starr" there. Every little scrap we can find helps!
