What NASA should have done was replace the right solid rocket booster with a new one, and maybe Challenger wouldn't have exploded after liftoff, or waited until the weather was warmer to launch.
Man, it's so sad. I was only 2 1/2, so I was too young to remember such a thing, but it still hits me just the same. I'll bet there wasn't a space shuttle liftoff after this that didn't have these images running through their mind hoping it didn't happen again. Did the voice at 1:39-40 say, "We have a problem?"
thank you, finally some good footage, no really! last video we saw sucked, the cameraman left the camera pointing at the parkin lot, then a minute after the explosion he finally pointed the camera up at the explosion and it was over, thanks,:}
@d1drifter87 Yes, thanks, I realize this, but I watched another documentary that shows that a violent wind sheer caused the shuttle to move violently seconds before the explosion, and, the movement was what caused the o-ring to fail at keeping the flame inside the rocket booster.
@IwshIcldstrtover No, the problem was a damaged O ring on the right SRB which caused a heat build up that destroyed the structural supports. The Right SRB then careened into the fuel tank, causing the explosion. The O ring problem was due to cold weather. They postponed the launch 3 times. They should have cancelled it.
@deathrooster14 Thanks for the description. No matter how many times I have seen this from different angles, it is always difficult to watch. You're right, they should hav cancelled the flight for sure.
didn't they know something was wrong weeks before the launch? and they just pushed it aside. Something like that

@saints093 All the boosters have the same design flaw. They should have redesigned the booster joint when it showed signs of problems years before.

Is 1:10 where the upper wind sheer caused the shuttle to violently shake which caused the rocket booster to shake loose?
IwshIcldstrtover 4 months ago
@IwshIcldstrtover the explosion wasnt due to shaking, it was due to a faulty O-ring

@IwshIcldstrtover The O ring failed before the shuttle was off the ground.

@IwshIcldstrtover Your welcome. I believe that this accident, along with Columbia, was the cause for the shut down of the space shuttle program.

@deathrooster14 I remember after Columbia, the program did shut down for about 2 years.
