I have a Alaskan Malumute/Husky she gets me walking everyday she lets me know she wants to go for a walk by howling and talking. Her name is Juno we wanted to spell it like The City in Alaska but everyone started spelling it juno instead of juneau
My friend Paul has an Alaskan Malamute named Quincy. Whenever I walked into the house Quincy would start doing the 'awoowoowoo' thing so I'd be like 'awoowoo Quincy!' xD
I used to have a short haired Malamute just like this one but wiht lighter fur, he was the cutest thing ever. Luckily, I could enjoy a whole lifetime with him, since he passed away of old age. He never, ever barked, but he liked to howl at the moon. I miss him, his name was Oreo. Now I have a Japanese Spitz puppy named Blanco, he's not even a year old but he reminds me so much of Oreo, he never barks and likes to howl too.
I acquired an old Rottweiler a few years ago... Donno how it is everywhere else,, but here you can tell the sound of an emergency vehicle by the sound of its siren Fire'truck has its own sound as do Police and Ambulance . Baby only howled to the sound of an ambulance.. I have to assume the person she originally bonded with left by ambulance and never came back'...
@greatesthenry Yes, and their instinct to chase and kill is overpowering...most owners have stories where the dog has done a runner and came back covered in blood. Impossible to work that out of them, so keeping them on lead is the way to go. I dressed my two on harnesses each one attached to the handlebar of my mountain bike....they pick it up in no time. Once you are in an area you know to be safe i.e no sheep etc.you can let them off and they'll run alongside no problems.
I see all these videos of peoples huskies and malamutes howling and barking, but my huskies (brother and sister) never howl or bark unless they get mad at each other and start fighting.
hi can i ask you do you have to keep your husky on a lish or chain to stop him runing off..?? coz mind is the same! its so hard to get him to bond with me..!!
Just so you know, Not all Siberian's have blue eyes. If you were led to believe they do, you were sadly misled. You're dog is all malamute, but don't be blowing off about standards of Husky's and their eye colors. They can vary. Your statement is as far out of place as your knowledge of the Husky breed, A-wipe!
We keep our Malamutes on a set of leads and switch out which lead they're on for change of scenery. Big thing on owning these beauties though! If you get them as puppies they WILL destroy everything they can get their little teeth into! Ours stripped wallpaper and pulled up trim and chunks of dry wall for the first two months we had her. She's a sweetheart now, but it was really frustrating! Also, training isn't done once.. You have to keep on it all the time and they will test you.
wish my dog could do that. my dog is 3/4 siberian husky and 1/4 alaskan malamute. it's not only malamuts who howls, right? and, does anyone know if every husky/malamute are agressive when they play? just growling, not real growling from the belly though
Your place looks really nice...good to see at least some people have the forethought not to have a Husky or Malamut and live in the city. I see so many abandoned Huskies now in the pounds...There should be more videos showing/informing people about the work/maintenance a sled dog needs in terms of exercise...So many people are attracted by the good looks but have no idea of the upkeep in hours of walking that they need.
@discoverydavid Sad but true. I recently was working at the local animal shelter where I live and there's like 5 Malamutes and like 8 Huskies, although some of the Huskies are puppies, so I think that was more of a not wanting the puppies issue. I adopted a 10 month old Malamute from there though knowing he'd be a handful. The owners gave him up cause he's "to hyper".....he's a 10 month old Malamute, lol. But yea, people need to know what they're in for before they get a pet.
@discoverydavid You can keep a malamute without owning a ranch or something. I take mine for a 1 - 1 1/2 hr run before going to work. Feeding right after keeps him satisfied and drowzy until the after work 1 1/2 - 2 hr walk and playtime. Before bedtime again for a 1 - 1 1/2 hr run (he pulls me on my kickbike/sled) and more playing around and socializing at the dogpark. Being smart, their brains need exercising as well, or they get bored. So basically it's a second job, but i love my dog .
@chanoom You can keep a malamute wherever you want if you are "prepared" for the work load...that was my point...considering how many Huskies and Malamutes end up in the pound there are obviously not enough 'prepared' people out there...that's all I was saying.
@discoverydavid yeah, its taking me a while to research the husky breed, the information i find is usually greatly exaggerated and not very informative =\
@thisisdirtwerk I have a sib and fully agree, people dont research the breeds either, not just energetic and need exercise but escape artists. Responsible dog owners only not people looking for a fanny magnet

Doubt it would be a good guard dog. They are too affectionate. On walks they'd protect you if you were being attacked, and they will guard you from other dogs. But I don't know if they would stop a burglar. Mine would probably stay in bed!
Howled at night as a puppy but not since.
Not much fur.
Very affectionate, welcomes you home. But prefers to play full on for 30 mins rather than be stroked, then lies down alone.
You can only train them so far, they aren't ultra intelligent like some dogs
@mattgeb84 they can be gaurd dogs since they are territorial, they howl alot and talk as a puppy :) and of coarse the fur will be all over the place, its a malamute, they shed, and they are a wonderful family dog so they will be more than happy to be on the bed or on the couch, and they are kinda easy to train, they are more obedient then a husky anyway. have fun ^^
would crating him while im at work be a problem? i can give him plenty of exercise after i get home but he'll have to be crated while im at work because i cant have him tearing up the furniture while im gone. I could come home for lunch to let him out for a while but he'll be crated for a total of 8 hours a day 5 days a week. is this an issue ?? remember i can give plenty of exercise in the form of 10 - 20 mile bike rides after i get out of work
@mattgeb84 uhh, i wouldnt crate him, but i would find a room that you have where u can fence him in so he can still walk around and put the crate in the room with newspaper in it :) i did that with my puppy and shes potty trained and is fine when im not at home now
You should seriously consider whether you truly have the time to commit to keeping a dog of this kind.
Having said that, I find the whole idea of 'crating' dogs cruel and unnecessary, and is a practice which should be illegal! With a dog this large I expect you to have a large garden. Erect a strong fence around the entire garden, buy a shelter and supply a secure water source.
Your dog would much rather the freedom of a long chain to a prison cell!
They do not make good guard dogs. They like people too much and affection. They do shed and twice a year they shed even heavier as they drop their undercoat. Some howl, some don't. Should assume it will. Very affectionate. They're considered hard to train. Very intelligent can lead to assuming their stubborn.
@mattsgarage Our Malamutes are opposites but so smart! One is very friendly, but the older is very much big on 'my people's space' and will only allow the post man to drop off packages. Nothing leaves the property without convincing her it's okay! We live in the country, and they're super good at letting us know when there is something wrong (wild boar mostly) They only bark when it's an emergency and then you have to get there NOW. You can't ignore it. They talk but are usually quiet!
our malamute looks just like him but reallly fluffy like a flufff ball. i just played this while he was in the room and his little face lol. sooo cute. x
Awe! we just got a malamute, and he's only 8 months old and is that big already, he doesn't howl yet though, his previous owners abused him, so we can't wait until his personality comes out more like yours, yours is beautiful! :)
I have a male alaskan malamute, but he hardly ever howls and I realy want him to. Does the fact that he is a male and that he has been neutered have anything to do with why he does not howl? If anyone has any ideas or techniques how I can get him to howl please let me know.
Maya, Here is your salute from the old hound. Hope you enjoy. ARRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ... Try for a nice loooooong howl sometime.
Malamutes and Huskies are expert howlers than many other breeds of dogs because they are the longest pure breeds on the planet, thus maintaining much of the wolf feature than most of the other breeds.
They do but not so often as Huskies and Malamutes. Akitas' howls are more like extended barks but they often do so only when feeling threatened but comparing to the two wolf-like breeds, they don't hold it as long like a wolf howl. Though malamutes and huskies also have those barking traces in their howls (the rough pitch), they actually howl in the same patterns as the grey wolves whom they descended from. Does that help?
We have one. Someone breeds them near us in the forest of dean. He's gorgous. A bit on the wilful side, and differcult to train, but worth it as he's very affectionate. ^_^ He's a lot bigger than his brothers and sisters. He weighs just under 10st!
We have our first, Kenai (pronounced Key-nigh), of 11 months. He always answers-back, very self-assured, does exactly what I tell him, if he has nothing better to do. He weighs only 30 kilos, so a good deal smaller than Maya. They are amazing people, we are very fortunate they share their lives with us.
That's so cute. He could be the sirien for a police car.

i would really like a Malamute and have a couple of questions for you.
is there anyway possible to train it as a guard dog
does it howl at night and keep you awake
does it get fur all over the place, if so is there anyway of preventing the fur from getting everywhere, such as combing him often
are they affectionate, will he sit on the couch with you and watch tv or even sleep at the foot of your bed
how hard was he to train
i would really appreciate a response to these questions thank you

Awe! we just got a malamute, and he's only 8 months old and is that big already, he doesn't howl yet though, his previous owners abused him, so we can't wait until his personality comes out more like yours, yours is beautiful! :)

that first howl was amazing. lasted more that 5 secs and matched the sirens. i love malamutes.

Our merlin is 5 months old and he is massive and is always howling. He was quite easy to train for a malimute

I have a male alaskan malamute, but he hardly ever howls and I realy want him to. Does the fact that he is a male and that he has been neutered have anything to do with why he does not howl? If anyone has any ideas or techniques how I can get him to howl please let me know.
adamoski18 2 years ago
@adamoski18 play an audio clip of other dogs howling and let him hear it.

Malamutes and Huskies are expert howlers than many other breeds of dogs because they are the longest pure breeds on the planet, thus maintaining much of the wolf feature than most of the other breeds.

@animalobssessor9
what about akitas
vladimircorvette 2 years ago
They do but not so often as Huskies and Malamutes. Akitas' howls are more like extended barks but they often do so only when feeling threatened but comparing to the two wolf-like breeds, they don't hold it as long like a wolf howl. Though malamutes and huskies also have those barking traces in their howls (the rough pitch), they actually howl in the same patterns as the grey wolves whom they descended from. Does that help?

my malamute doesnt bark and only howls when shes sad?

God I miss hearing that sound. I had an Alaskan Malamute named Shadow and he did that all the time.

We have one. Someone breeds them near us in the forest of dean. He's gorgous. A bit on the wilful side, and differcult to train, but worth it as he's very affectionate. ^_^ He's a lot bigger than his brothers and sisters. He weighs just under 10st!
Cheshirlae 2 years ago
Thanks for that, will go on the search now and see what i can find. Again, thanks :)

jackandsadie you have a beautiful Mal.
