John's Big Dipper pickups were made specifically to be low output pickups so they aren't very effective for most casual users who want that blues push or that compressed power amp distortion and SRV blues burn when they're gonna playing at lower volumes than him. He wanted much more headroom since he's now always playing at balls to the wall stadium volumes and using 100 watt Two Rocks so having those lower output pickups give him a little bit more room before breakup in that environment.
@djmmjd3 The Big Dippers are derived from the Texas Specials. The Pickups you're talking about are in his Black Strat which were custom wound in the custom shop. The Big Dippers are only in his Signature Strat and the mass produced John Mayer Black1.
Hey, this doesn't really have to do with the guitar so much as the amp, but how do you like the Two Rock sound compared to contemporary or vintage Fender amps?
@RuecianG The two rock is a great amp. you can really dial it in and it uses really high quality components. Each knob is very reactive as far as dialing in what you want. I can't say it blows the doors off of a Fender amp, because of the price comparison, but i can say it covers a lot more ground than a Fender.
@RuecianG I was blown away by the Two-Rock's youtube movies. And I was able to put a budget together. So I went to the store, and became totally disappointed with it. It sounds huge, even on low volume, but it is really direct, the cabinet is very small and however it sounds very good, it is very punchy. Fender's don't have that. But then again, fenders only sound like... fenders.
@JCreative72 You became totally disappointed by the Two Rock? Why would you be disappointed with it if it sounds huge? I usually think that to be a good thing.
@RuecianG Well, I tried the 22 combo, The amp itself is fine I guess, but the small size cab is way too direct, in my face, sounding for me. Tried a few Carr amps next. They blew my mind. But also my wallet. Anyway, I was looking of a supreme practice amp. So I ended up choosing between the Carr Mercury (8 watt) and a custom build small version of my favorite amp, a handwired 59 bassman. So I went for a 2x6v6 2x10 tweed bassman where I can (see next...)
@JCreative72 (next...) where I can kill one speaker and that has a powerscale funtion. The difference was about 1000 euro, so the custom amp is ordered :-)
@vmarcks We do but the transaction needs to be completed by wiring the full payment to our bank. We cannot accept credit cards from out of the country right now.
You found a little like Flea!

Superb guitar playing, but somehow you have managed to suck the tone right out of a two rock...
