Hi Steve, I really enjoy your always-awesome videos. I've made a few of these and if you care, here are a few tips to getting a slit drum sounding better: very dense wood is best, which you already knew; the wood has to be thick, ie 3/4" or 1"; cut away half of the wood (on the underside) close to the beginning of each slit (it needs some flexibility so it can vibrate). Hope you make another one soon! I love the sound these make.
I'm actually making a tongue drum (slit drum variation) for my course at uni and it's made of Beech, fairly thick (About 180mm) tongues, and what I found is that the tongues resonate better if you take off about half the thickness near the base of the tongues. Gotta lotta chiselling to do!
Not really a real instrument, but if you do some ACTUAL research this may be helpful to you. BTW, ACTUAL research, (as opposed to just using the word research to replace "I think this is true" would show that rosewood is right around the fourth hardest wood in the world (I know cherry and Ironwood are harder, and perhaps teak)
@tbenkey You should also do your research. Cherry is very deffenately NOT harder than rosewood. However, there are at LEAST ten woods that I use in instrument building that are. Rosewood is not chosen because of it's hardness, but rather it's specific density, which generates a bright, but warm tone.
As far as cherry goes, lay a peice of it next to a peice of rosewood, and smack them both with a hammer. Take note of which one dents easier.
@airsoftpro1010 Realy hope you're being some kind of sarcastic and pleased with his work, because if you consider that every video here in youtube was shot by someone who is lifeless than the whole world would be in troubles, don't you think? Anyways, keep it coming Stevin...
@airsoftpro1010 your an ass hole this guy is cool and can make some really cool stuff. You have no life if your comenting on videos that you dont want to watch.
I found the slit drum video, yay! I just saw it on the thumb piano video. I can only wonder if involving math would make a difference as far as the length of the drum slits in relation to each other. Either way it looks and I'm sure sounds... very cool.
Wow, like father, like son. At least when it comes to filming skills ;p
BTW rosewood has always been the wood of choice for musical instruments because it propagates vibration with the lowest fading among all woods. Basically, it rings when you hit it.
Great one Steve.. I have been looking at a Cajon drum that basically also is a box of wood ;o) With some variations using some strings inside. I have not got to building one yet but with time and patience!!
