  • Hauntingly beautiful.

  • nicely done

  • we had a fundraising nite in mitchelstown co cork ireland and gemma kindly played a few songs and from growing up with her living a few miles away from me i never thought i'd see her develope into someone so beautyful and such a great singer, thanks for a great nite and keep up the good work...xxx

  • One of the most beautiful and moving things I have heard in all my 79 years. As a fervent Burns enthusiast, can someone please tell me where I can buy a CD?

  • @dledgar1 Eddi Reader, pure voice, has recorded a cd, 'The Songs of Robert Burns', which has my favourite version of this song. Go to Amazon UK website and search the cd title, but it must be 2008 version (they call it "The songs of Robert Burns- Expanded"). It has her best version of this, (better than her live ones here), and also has 'Comin' tho the Rye', which is not on the 2007 version. Thanks, because you've just made me wonder why I don't own it and I'm off to buy it now.

  • whit a pile of shite.

cluleless. how very fucking dare she indeed

anyone who likes the lyrics.... don't be be so fucking lazy.... go read, engage brain and try and understand.

    .

  • Celebrate the exceptional skill of the writer. That his writing still resonates is what makes it so special. A beautiful voice for a beautiful song.

  • It's almost scary how natural her beauty is! And her singing is spellbinding! I just love, love and love listening to this version, who I concider the best one ever!

  • Wow! What a hauntingly beautiful version. I think this works SO much better than others such as Eddi Reader (who I love) and Karen Matheson. They're just too 'busy'. It's the simplicity of this that makes it so powerful.

  • Excellent version !! Well done Gemma !!!!!!

  • i saw her singing this in a love divded ages ago, but it stuck with me, i love that song, and i love her singing it

  • Very nice

  • zoolander you are deaf, Eddi is God, and this is no comparison, but it;s good the more it is sung...

  • Why? because all the record companies are putting out the same old cookie cutter crap. They are afraid of something that sounds diffrent.

  • A++++++++++

  • fab....but on dvd"a love divided"it is haunting!.....

  • I want the dvd!! I saw the movie ages ago and still remember her singing in it!!I have to get a hold of a coypy too!

  • I first listened to this song in a movie and it had such an impact on me; it's so touching and meaningful; I love how Gemma Hayes sings it,she has an amazing voice

  • This is a lovely version..very similar to Karen Matheson and Paul Brady version..check it out, you will not expect the impact it has on you..unreal!

  • i really really dont like Karen Matheson and Paul Bradys version, its too fussy and frilly, they forget their telling a story, they completely lose the whole spirit of the song like!

  • not nearly as good as eddie reader

  • What!!! NO WAY Gemma sound soooo much better. Eddie Reader is crap compared to Gemma's.

  • Pity she misses here half the first verse - if only because I could listen to it again and again.

Who shall say that fortune grieves him

While the star of hope she leaves him?

Me, nae cheerful twinkle lights me

    Dark despair around benights me.

For me a beautiful poem / song / tune is only spoilt by affected extra complications. You can't improve on perfection.

  • What a voice,Rabbie would have been proud to hear it performed so beautifuly, well done lass

  • such a unique voice, beautiful!

  • Spectacular. Can't believe I hadn't found this before now! Amazing voice.

  • Amazing!

  • Gemma does a MUCH Better version than Eddi Reader!

  • devine!!!

  • Eddi Reader did a great version of this with strings a few years ago, if anyone could post it that would be top. Mind you this bird does a good job of it.

  • She sings an abbreviated version of this Robert Burns poem as a character in the 1999 film "A Love Divided."

There's a nice harmony laid on it in the film and it will send shivers down your spine. The film is excellent. Check it out on DVD.

  • If you can watch this and not fall in love with this incredibly beautiful and talented woman, you're a tougher man than I.

Saw her in Portland, Oregon last year and she was spectacular. Charming, talented, beautiful. Why aren't more people listening to her music in the States?

  • I've been following her for years. It's good to hear people are "discovering" her.
