  • how do you do this???

  • I'm an art student from South Africa currently working with contemporary film and photography and I've only recently discovered slit-scanning. it's probably one of the most awesome things ever..wow

how to you create the slit-scanning effect?

    i have no idea

  • Isn't it possible to achieve this effect with the time displacement effect and a vertical gradient?

  • i dont know... i will have to try that!! very good idea! thank you!

  • Hey, I just started doing this today with some of my footage in after effects-- I was able to get a 100 line resolution by interpreting the footage as having 100 fps, and then doing frame blending/interpretation for all the 100 layers. Its better than this, but still not true slit scan. Good Work.

  • @KrKroes did you actually cut up the footage into that many layers and offset them individually? I've been using time displacement and made a black to white ramp for the displacement map. The results were similar to this video. I'd really like a way to offset every row individually though, (768 rows).

  • @girraffeman i sure did. i am also sure that there is an easier way...

  • This is a very simple idea that yields spectacular results! I imagine it would be really smooth if you had doubled or even quadrupled the resolution!

  • thanks so much! you understand then!! yeah if i could slice it into 256 slices that would be cool... i actually wish i could just do each line - 480 lines... or i guess HD would be 768! thats alot of layers!

    see you around!

  • how come people in the reflections are subject to the effect??

  • i slit scanned the whole frame, so anything moving is all streched! this was a fun project. hey thanks for watching... noisivelvet... i will check out your channel now! peace!

  • yeah, but when the people walk by the people sitting down, they are stretched but their shadows which are also in motion do not stretch? thanks for checking out my channel btw!

  • ahhh yes. the shadows are not very long vertically, which is the only dimension affected. what i did was divide the video into 64 horizontal slices. then i offset each slice one frame behind the one above it. that way the top slices go first. the shadows are in one slice. hey thanks for asking about it! i really spent a long time making 64 layers and making them offset. thanks alot and see you on the flipside!!

  • Neat effects! Life in another dimension! lol

  • thanks! i think maybe i am in the other dimension looking into this one!

  • Everyday images become interesting with alittle special effects software.

To be young, tall, and leaning, isn't that we all want?

  • That's amazing John, I've added it to my John Burnap Playlist. You are really getting great at this editing. I'm in the mood to do some experiments now. Did those people know you were filming them? I always think about going out and filming people, but I'm kind of shy about it.

anywaz, once again, a great piece from you. You're definately a video artist. I'm sure there is a fancier name for that.

    :)

    panty

  • thanks tessie!! experiment! reveal! discover!

the group of four kids knew i was filming, although they thought i was crazy i am sure when i said that the people walking by would be all stretched out like rubber bands. i think students are great subjects. you can find a college campus almost anywhere. they love it! i gave them my youtube address but i havent seen any comments.

well thanks! we are both great video artists. you know i have always admired your videos for their clean fresh look. john

  • is that the same effect you used in your other video where you were turning in your chair? I guess it the object moving in the video is slow, the splits are more pronounced. good video. I subbed cooksterz.

  • yeah that was the same effect... i love how time can be interpreted different ways. that guy on the corner... he is really deep to me. he wavers to and fro, and what was he saying?

like laineart said, i wonder whats in the bags?

anyway, oh yeah cooksterz is awesome!

talk to you soon my friend!

  • kinda reminds me a bit of mr. fantastic or stretch arm strong

very cool effect, seems like the guy at the bus stop knew what was going on by the way he stepped back and looked at his feet. haha

  • hahah! it did seem like he knew he was being scanned!

  • that is hilarious and weird!

  • thanks for watching! stay tuned!

  • Hey everyone in ucla walks like Max Wall

    Cool...

    S;)

  • wow... i looked him up and he was way ahead of his time! hey you would appreciate this: the next effect i am doing is painting with light... however the new effect i am using... for a 4 min video... will take 30-35 hours to render!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Holy slit-scan render...!!!

    I cant wait

    S:)

  • boy, neither can i shane. 35 hours rendered, 8 hours to go! almost there! and the best part is, i have know idea if it really works until its done. phew!!!

  • this slit thing you use.....awesome john.

    rock on-space

  • thanks man, it took forever to make the effect. its so simple though:

    ingredients: one video, one computer.

slice video horizontally into 64 slices.

offset each slice by on frame on the timeline.

bake for 20-30 minutes on high!

  • lets get groovy with Gravity! oh yea! Hey i wanted to know the whole story about the transient looking guy. What is in his bag. Where was he going. Does he have phobias, stuff like that... LOL :D great work

  • i know!!! i really love that guy! i would have loved to get an interview with the slit-scan going. he sure seemed a bit OCD...

thanks for stopping by cooksterz! now that your free!

  • My Friend. This was spectacular.I am totally blown away. This was the best treat ever on this late night.I can not wait to see your next video. This was awesome. Please say hi to your wife for me and I wish you both a fantastic day tomorrow. Please share more.God bless you and your family.

  • hahaha lol

  • i know... its like a funhouse mirror, but everywhere!! thanks so much for watching this long stock footage!

  • Yeah, that's pretty trippy! The first guy at the crosswalk was hilarious!

  • it sure is weird... i have been searching for things to throw into my template effect. anything that moves horizontally... hmmm. well tonight we are painting with light so stay tuned.

thanks so much for watching johnny!

  • that is so funny and weird...I like how what is stationary isn't affected by the slit-scan...so cool! Esp. the guy @ 2:11.

  • cool! it is fun.. i really love that guy @ 2:11.. how he started to cross and then moved back. i just wanted to run some stuff through the effect now that i spent hours building the template. glad you like it. tonight we are going to try some painting with light (like the books at the end of the swirly bonus vid) stay tuned!

  • LOL, that was funny!

  • thank you!
