This is an awesome tutorial but really, my finger... I was tearing up just because of how hard I was pressing to get it to sound right. No matter what I do, including holding the guitar wrong just to see if it's possible, I can't make it sound right! No matter how straight my finger is, no matter how hard I press, it's apparently never straight enough.

I'm assuming that these problems will go away with practice, but if I have to cry through every practice then this may be quite a bumpy ride...

I have large hands. I have found that to get the bar chords to work, the entire last digit of my index finger is actually overhanging the fretboard. If you have small hands like the gentleman in the video, well then it appears there is very little if any index finger overhang.

@HmYesILoveYou Look at the lessons from Justin Sandercoe. He has a full website of free lessons, and he is a professional teacher. Look for lessons called CH-006 Basic barre chords part 1. This is a three part video series in which he discusses all flaws for Barre chords. That should help clear any problem.

hey every body, i have trouble playing bar chords, i don't have a problem with placing my fingers on the strings or anything like that, it just hurts after a few minutes of playing, is it just because i'm a beginer and i don't have enough strength yet, or am i doin something wrong?

@Tikey69 as you play longer and longer your hands wont hurt so much and you will be used to playing them, most beginners have this problem its alright

@Tikey69 you aren't doing anything wrong, you just need to gain strength, It took me about a month before I could do barre chords, you just need to insist with your fingers, but you will see that you will get the hang of it ;)

@TheDigkatchios2010 Some people have to have the base of their barring finger closer to the neck than others. I myself have to do this because otherwise my barring finger doesn't flatten against the strings enough to allow the strings to ring out.

If that doesn't work you could always bar just the top three strings for the Bm, A, G and F# chords shown in this video, and simply not play the bottom E string.

e.g. for the A chord, you could play X77655 as an alternative to the usual 577655.

@chadtp Well, one piece of advise that I can perhaps give you is to practise the same basic chords like (A, G, C, Em, E) etc, in (bar chord form), that way your able to not only play the basic chord notes, but are able to learn how to use (bar chords) at the same time to strengthen your hand and fingers, it's worked for me allot, and I think it should be able to help you as well, and the good part about it is, is that it will get you started on using (bar chords) more.

My hands are chronic. Im tinking my finger reach doesnt allow me to form a proper bar FLATacross d strings, but Im trying - even tho my hands felt like theyre seizing up at the wrist when I try to play the chords. i've got mainly the same problem although I've been playing guitar for quite a while now. What I *think* is the problem is that I'm not "relaxed" enough. I press my thumb too firm against the back of the guitar and this hurts more or less. Just try and practice to let the strength come out of your fingers and not your thumb!

i have no problems playing bar chords except after playing them a while my wrist starts to really hurt does anyone else have this problem will my wrist stop hurting after playing them longer open chords dont hurt my wrist but bar chords do after a while

an easy way to strengthen your hands is use one of those forearm clamps that you have to squeeze. its worked a tone for me.
