this is one of their best musical songs...the chord changes and the chugging of the guitar, and changes, but with these images that gets lost a bit. Someone made this video, but as an artistic form, their needs to be just a little bit more of a hint, a tie between the pure war footage and the song...I'm sure morrisey would have given a bit more of a clue if he made the video. yes, we all know the smiths used the soldier picture, but thisvideo's juxtaposition doesnt have any meaning
@Zendek2406 Bit strong that. Love em or hate em, without em we'd be fucking dead. Without us, they'd have no fucking culture and they got violence from us. That's our legacy to the developing world. How to kill people properly. Mechanised destruction is a British thing. Got fuck all to do with the beauty of the Smiths though.
@Zendek2406 I do believe Moz is speaking of Manchester "pigs", if I understand the song.... which I do!!!!!
BTW: In this context "pig's" wouldn't have an appostrophe as the "pigs" don't own anything. Do you understand grammer? Well, according to this enigmatic comment, you most likely don't know much at all!
Get The Smiths back in the charts and celebrate Meat Is Murder 25th Anniversary The download is happening right now... google The Smiths No 1 and see whats going on right now!
Isn't this song about his problems with the headmaster at his school? What the hell are all of you arguing about when it has nothing to do with the whole reason we're here. Long live the Smiths!
There's stories about a song and there is also stories behind the lyrics. Yeah it protrays a problem with his Headmaster but if you read deeper into the lyrics slash video it could tell something of different story. In short the door could swing both ways. It can be about Morriseys childhood experience in school or the events of the time that reminded him of that(ie. being in the Military is a lot like being school)Just my opinion.
@smilleydunc smilley mate its not about the military being the same as school i fact when we were at school in the 70s most of the teachers were ex war soldiers RAF etc and so they instilled the same regimental brutallity of the barrack room my generation were told we were useless with a cane and a strap i went to school with mozzers cousin in the 70s and i was also in the military
the video is a proof of the ever going shit by the media, politics, human ambition, greed, etc etc etc--not only a sympton of today's age, unfortunately
Stop all this b.s. !!! who gives a fuck, go riot on the streets of london for fucks sake if you all have a problem with the government. i do too but i just want to escape and listen to the smiths without any problems, geesh... VIVA MOZ:)
Fear, hostility, aggression, jingoism... very similar. You should be careful when you make broad statements such as "fuck the USA", because there are many millions of Americans who detest war as much as you think you do. It can be a slippery slope from such sentiments to acting them out in violent ways, so please be mindful of the apparent contradiction here. Peace.
duke, the Exploited (i don't listen punk by the way) is right: "Fuck the USA, fuck the US, sir yes sir". And that means: fuck the US government, secret agencies, army and multinational business. Nothing to do with joes and janes. But I go further: the US is the leading power of the consumer society and anti-education, the majority of the US population does nothing more, just wasting the rescources of the whole planet meaninglessly. Exceptio probat regulam. educated minority: excuse me.
I agree that authority should be challenged, but to write generalizations about a population of more than 300 million people is short-sighted and immature. Please don't let the media control how your thoughts. Again, your jingoism is no better than what you criticize. Xenophobia is never a good thing. Millions of Americans want peace, despite what our (former) president would have you believe.
I don't care what the media says or does. BTW media always biased and in most cases on the side of US interests, so your allegation is pointless in this case. Ok generalization is baaaaad... who cares? We all see the consequences. Just mentioning one example among many... Which country pollutes our planet the most brutally? maybe china? its population is 4 times higher than US', but US the other one whose government doesn't even try to do something against this.
Isn't recent financial crisis the fault of the the world's first consumer society, and its meaningless, unprecedented consumption without any boundaries? the fault of the international bankers who are trying to take over the world from the wall street for almost a century long now? the fault of their system, they forced to the world? i am seeking the answers, what about you? and there are waaay more questions. but u had right: "fuck" was too primitive first reaction, excuse me for that
I think that there are many things on which we would agree. The financial crisis is a lie, and organizations such as the IMF, NATO, OPEC, World Bank, and even the UN to an extent are all guilty or complicit. But then, so are we all. We have the world that we have chosen, to some degree. But now you are getting into another completely different topic. This began by me pointing out xenophobia and dangerous generalizations, which have nothing to do with what you wrote next. One last thing (con't)..
organizations? sorry duke but I have to say, that IMF, NATO, World Bank is the creature and servant of wall street interests, nothing more and in this meaning, the interests of US government. UN is just another pointless, malfunctioning organization, sometimes used to prove US and Israeli actions (f.e. defamation and sacrifice of Yugoslavia or Palestine), but its warnings are regularly ignored by them. OPEC is the only really independent pressure group among the mentioned ones.
It was forecasted by the catalan television (El Ritual del Professor is a rough catalan translation of "Headmaster's Ritual" ). However in this case the catalan translation reads much like to the spanish translation.
this vid has alot to do with the smiths with the song being the headmaster ritual the first song from meat is murder and the video clips being from the year of the pig the picture that featured as the cover for meat is murder
ps morrissey is a lyrical genius and it saddens me that ill never get to see a live smiths performance
Was this part of a concert special that was played on TV or something? It seems like it, based on the fact that the live footage is mixed with the military clips. I would love to have a full version (and one with improved sound quality). Any information would be helpful!
Yeah, this looks like this was the same TV appearance that they also played Handsome Devil on (interspersed with clips from Orphee) that's also on Youtube. I don't know any more details though, unfortunately.

You should read the lyrics then. The song is about school.

Well yeah, I would agree with you, but usually my interpretation of lyrics is dreadful, so I was just saying what I was told.

Right on. I jsut thought you might want to enlighten yourself. It's good reading too.
