@SgtErnestBilko NO they were not the first. Boyce and Hart wrote and recorded it in 1965 and then offered it first to the Liverpool Five who recorded it with RCA Victor in early 1966 a few weeks before PR and the Raiders picked it up.

Has to be a spoof, since although that sounds somewhat like Mark Lindsay, that isn't him or Revere or the rest. Footnote: They actually did do a version of this Boyce/Hart tune before The Monkees charted with it in 1966/67.
