I absolutely love Gordon in this episode. Most of the time he was quite pompous but you see another side to him here; somewhat wiser, slightly fatherly in his efforts to help Thomas and his acceptance of his apology.

The cars in that scene were empty, even with lead in them, they would be lighter than engines are. Engines are probably at least three times heavier, that's why Thomas fell through the hollow spot in the ground.
