Yes, Ames was like Target. They were slightly trashier, and mostly in the Northeastern part of the USA. They totally bit the dust when Target and Walmart moved into the region.
@DevSodDribble I think slightly trashier is putting it nicely. Ames was a second-rate store. Dirty, with junky clothes, electronics, etc. They made Target look like Saks Fifth Avenue. Even Wal-Mart was much nicer of a store by comparison.
That's not necessarily true at all. Target, yeah definitely, a higher class store...but it all depends on what Ames you went to. Ames were always different -- the one I went to/worked at in Carmel, NY was always kept clean and tidy. Clothes and electronics weren't "junky" at all. I didn't buy clothes at Ames, but many of my video games growing up were from Ames.
@dandaman22585 I get what you're saying... I was just speaking from experience of the several I was in near where I lived in Western MA. The gold-standard in that genre for me was always Caldor.
$10 @ Wally World.

Wow. In my opinion $24.99 was expensive for department store jeans even back then. I don't even pay $25 now for jeans at Fashion Bug.

I loved Caldor as well. There was one right in the center of my town. It's a Kmart nowadays.
