wow, this is amazing... i am going to be singing this song and so i was looking for a recording so that i can hear the melody line and memorize it and this has been the best recording so far :D i havent started singing it in german yet because first i want to understand fully and know the meaning of the text so that i might sing it from my heart not just from memory, but this is truely amazing :)
This astonishing Lied lies at the core of Music. The German words are lyrical, blend beautifully with the music.I attempt here to do an Italian translation:
O Arte Sacra, in quante ore grigi,
An die Musik - This astonishing miracle from Schubert's pen, and his friend Franz Schober's words, sums up everything beautiful about Musik and what the ancient Greeks idealized as Art, and in their concepts of storge, philos and agape. The German language fits the notes like a glove, something that I, as one of Italian extraction, have a hard time admitting. The words are INHERENTLY splendid, in any language. I will give an attempt at an Italian translation because Italian is, well, so lovely.
A wonderful interpretation of this sublime lied! And for a superb version with a female voice, listen to Dame Janet Baker, accompanied by Murray Perahia.
For all of you, my friends, who love this marvellous piece, I recommend also Janet Baker, accompanied by Murray Perahya. Also Thomas Quasthoff with an orchestral arrangement. There's nothing like this to uplift my soul. My warmest thanks, o thee sacred Music!
@musicfanBRA Ja!
I can't listen to this piece enough. Everytime I hear it, it's like a prayer to the art of music. Thank you music - you have been in my life from the beginning and I think I will leave this world hearing music
It's strange... listening to this, I feel like this was Shuberts parting gift. Corny I know, but how can person who loves music like he did not leave without leaving us with his gift.
I thought it was just me, but I also cry when singing it (but not in public). It's just so emotional both music and lyrics. Plus this lovely voice of Fritz Wunderlich.
Greatest voice ever - such beauty - surely Schubert must have had someone like Fritz in mind when he wrote it. Such harmony between voice and piano - I have been listening to him for over thirty years - He is my hero.
Hello people, I am doing An die Musik at our local, state festival. I was wondering if there were any pieces at a similar skill level to this one, in terms of range and breath control.
Look before you type! I followed the Related Videos link to Fritz Wunderlich sings 4 Schubert Songs (Lieder) which has 4 good choices for you. An Sylvia can be sung in English--it;s by Shakespeare. The last Song is from a cycle, Die Schoene Muellerin, and is a fine example of varying the verses of a strophic song (one in which all the verses are sung to the same music.).
@seektheforce WOW! They're kind-of like at opposite ends of technique levels required - An Die Musik is a difficult, difficult lied to perform effortlessly. They took it off ABRSM grade 8 and moved it to the teaching diploma level. caro mio ben is simple and beautiful, and I bet you knocked them dead with it!
Fritz's voice is shockingly beautiful. As usual, had heard loads about, but never got round to listening. Loved it.
I thought this sounded a touch higher than normal and a comment below confirmed it. Must be more gratifying to sing as a tenor. I often find singing lieder can be so hard 'cos it gets so low!
j'ai découvert ce chanteur dans "le chant de la terre" "das lied von der Erde", il y a longtemps (en 1975); avec Christa Ludwig (je crois): c'était merveilleux!
It was a nice experience listening to this song. Wunderlicht has a nice lyric voice. Long time ago I loved his Rodolfo in La Boheme.... Thanks for this video....

NICE TO HAVE THE CONTENT!
O fairest art, how oft in hours blighted,
When I am trapped in life's wild race,
Hast thou with love on me alighted,
And flown me to a better place!
From thy sweet harp a sigh so often drifted,
A chord so holy and of bliss,
Thou show'dst me heaven's light uplifted,
O fairest art, I thank thee so for this!

O gracious Art, in how many grey hours
When life's fierce orbit encompassed me,
Have you kindled my heart to warm love,
And charmed me into a better world!
Oft has a sigh, issuing from your harp,
A sweet, blessed chord of yours,
Thrown open the heaven of better times;
O gracious Art, for that I thank you!

Du holde Kunst, in wieviel grauen Stunden,
Wo mich des Lebens wilder Kreis umstrickt,
Hast du mein Herz zu warmer Lieb entzunden,
Hast mich in eine beßre Welt entrückt!
Oft hat ein Seufzer, deiner Harf' entflossen,
Ein süßer, heiliger Akkord von dir
Den Himmel beßrer Zeiten mir erschlossen,
Du holde Kunst, ich danke dir dafür!
