A friend of mine was at McDill AFB on 03/20 and 21 of 2010, doing flybys at the base for all specators to see, including the men and women of our great USAF. Mr. Tim Choppe is an inspiration with his C-54 aircraft along with his awesome crew. I was fortunate to be able to fly in this aircraft that day. These guys are very dedicated to this airplane and to the Berlin Airlift program. I hope more people get to see this aircraft in flight sometime. God Bless you Tim and your crew. Thank you.
And what of Russia? Stalin would have been killed. Hitler would have Eastern Europe. But it was not the job of the allies to sit on their hands letting Hitler to run things.
There was a 2005 German film about. There was an American film made about it and it is fairly good: "The Big Lift" starring Montgomery Clift and Paul Douglas. It is too long for some viewers, because the film includes lots of flying scenes and scenes showing every aspect of the airlift, including GCA. People of many nationalities worked together to make the airlift a success. Clips of both films are here in YouTube.
What a wonderful video, but yet people ignore these events because they are too busy insulting Americans in overcrowded videos about the allied bombing raids during World War II.
I was a mechanic in the USAF from 1958 to 1962. My last assignment was the 48th Air/Sea Rescue squadron at Eglin AFB in Florida. One of the planes that I worked on was the C54 which was used for long over the sea searches..In the belly of the aircraft there was still coal dust from the Berlin Airlift flights..Awesome video..By the way, I flew one of these from New Jersey to Madrid to my first assignment when I first entered the USAF..Love this plane.
my father SGT.THOMAS S RISBON was part of the airlift and i am so very proud of him that it chokes me up.The man had a heart of gold.I miss you so much..rip Dad.
Without GCA radar approaches, the Berlin Airlift would have never occurred! It would not have been possible to land that many aircraft, in all weather conditions, without GCA.
I served in the U.S. Air Force in Berlin at Templehof from 1967 to 1969 and cried the day I had to leave. What a wonderful city, people and experience! God bless you!
This is so awesome! I will never forget what the Americans did for us Germans!!! My grandpa was in the "Wehrmacht"... The Americans put him into their prison, but treated him so good! Before he died he often told me about those nice Americans! Thank you America!!! There is a German movie called "Die Luftbruecke" (the airlift!)... try to get it, if it is available in English!
Every American will be and is still welcome in Germany!
"Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy."
When humanity hurts America digs deep and comes. This was a shining moment that was appreciated and remembered even today. But more often than not, when their tummies are full and their wounds are healed they turn and kick us in the teeth. Yet we will do it again for those in need. Doing the right thing does not have to be appreciated to prove it is right thing to do.
Belive me, not only Americans are willing to help those who need help. Its in our human nature to help those who suffer... its just governments and politics that divide us into fractions that sometimes want to show who's better by fighting. Remove that and i think there wouldnt be much fighting or war left in the world... Those people back there had hearts of gold and as I can see from your post chaplainphil, you've still got it :) Nothing says "human" more than helping each other.
Video power, liked the concept

Stalin said himself ''Britain gave the time; the USA gave the money; and the USSR gave the blood.'
Had America not been there at all Britian would have eventually been overrun.

I think this was a necessary and very important operation to counter Stalin, and I wonder why no movies about this operation were made.
Cheers from an Indian citizen!
