  • a plane that has an inseverable connection to so many families in the uk, and what a beauty they are too.

  • Classical music is a passion of mine, and J.S.Bach is in my humble opinion the greatest single composer of all time. But I'm afraid even old Johann Sebastian would be hard pressed to come up with anything that sounds as good as four Rolls Royce Merlins.

Ok, we're not comparing like with like, but it doesn't matter which way you look at it, poor old JSB just can't compete with Rolls-Royce!

  • your in u.s.a? because that plane was bombing

  • @andrewrobloxguy canada as the description says

  • A feast for the ear!

  • These amazing aircrafts were used widely in peninsular MALAYSIA during 1950s and 1960s for bombing raids on the communist camps in the jungle during the emergency period. Thanks to the commonwealth military forces that helped us in restoring peace in our country during our most difficult time...

  • My grandpa was a Tail Gunner in the RCAF 433 Squadron, Group 6 Stationed at Skipton-on-Swale. He survived a crash during training in a Wellington then survived the rest of the war and earned a DFC. He passed away in 2009 at 86. 98% of all Tail Gunners were KIA and never saw the end of the war, he was on the lucky 2%.

  • My god that sounds nice.

  • She was at the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale, Long Island this weekend and I had the honor of touring her, and speaking with her crew. A rare and wonderful treat. Had trouble getting aft from the navigator's position to the aft space over those wing beams!

  • My grandfather was a tailgunner in this craft, amazing they have one here at the museum for a couple days, gonna check it out, great vid,

  • My grandfather was a tail gunner. Flew in both Lancs and Wellingtons. He passed away in 2005. Miss him much.

  • Can you imagine his power in fighting!

  • Ive seen this EXACT plane up close. It was incredible!!

  • 48 cylinders of fury right there!

  • I think this is my favourite sound in the entire world! Love it.

  • I like the beautiful sound of the Rolls Royce Pakard Merlin engines.

  • @ghostrider0749 i don't think the engines are american packard built copies of the merlin but just straight RR melins.

  • That sound is more than just music to my ears...

  • Beautiful sound. Beautiful aircraft. Saw her sister, City of Lincoln fly over where I worked. Couldn't believe it. what a sight!

  • I used to clean that exact plane`s drip trays when i worked at the museum. Bonked my head on the propeller once or twice too

Wonder if they still have the teddy bear in the cockpit

  • I was at the 2009 War & Peace show about a week ago and the last remaining Avro flew over. A Spitfire flew over the day before, as well as an Me108 (thats not a typo, Me108 is a training version of a 109). The single Merlin made the 108 sound like a Subaru WRX. And when the Lancaster came over at around 300 feet or so, the fucking ground shook, it was AWESOME. Even louder than the T-34/85's 38 liter V12, and i was standing beside the damn thing running!

  • Cool video! The CWH rocks :)

  • These planes fly over my house in London a couple of times a year. It happened the other day, and set off every single car alarm. Unless you're there, you don't know how loud this thing is.

  • Put x4 Rolls Royce V12 Merlin's on anything & its gonna sound fantastic... Put them on something that looks as beautiful as an Avro Lancaster & you have a recipe for Absolute Perfection!!!

  • I've been inside a Lancaster when I went to Beverley air museum with my dad, years ago. It was enomous, and we could almost 'feel' the atmosphere there. My dad went in one in WW2 so it brought back memories for him. He often had a tear in his eyes when he talked about 'his' planes...

  • Wow! Very Cool

  • What can I say after hearing this amazing sound ? I love piston engine !

  • Think of what it was like gunning in the back of that thing! woooo

  • It is said that the war would have been lost without the Lancaster...

  • Good!

  • I live in Canada near the warcraft museum where they have one of the last flying Lancasters. On Canada Day every year the Harvards always buzz my house but one year I heard the roar of those Merlins go right over my house...what a machine!

  • A few years ago a lancaster flew around in circles above my house waiting to take past in a flypast over a military show in london. The sound was amazing a lot of my neighbours remembered the lancaster from the war when they were kids some of them were crying when this lancaster was above as it brought back many memories.

  • Oh baby, that sound..... and its legal! Aural joy.

  • I remember about a year and a half ago I heard this incredible sound, looked out the window, and this aircraft flew past at knife-edge, at about 500ft.

There isn't a sight quite like it!

  • As far I know, the Merlin engines used in aviation are equiped wtih superchargers.

I'm not sure, but I think they used two-step s.c.

The big brother of the Merlin, the Griffon, did.

B.t.w., everd heard a Shackleton with 4 Griffons?

    That's really awesome!!!!

  • S for Sugar is at Hendon museum and was credited i think with 147 missions.

It was retired as a flying lancaster.

Duxford have an engineless lanc which looks good.

  • I know exactly what you mean. I live fairly close to Mount Hope, so I get the pleasure of hearing those merlins purr during the summer!

  • I was at Russell Groups 2008 Friendly Foes over the Falls (Canada)this summer, and they had russell groups spit mark IX,Hurricane XII plus Messerschmitt bf 109e also Hamiltons Lancaster and a guest spitfire do flypasts AWESOME! great airshow all volunteers.

  • Maybe, but only two lancasters hold a air worthiness certificate. Only two can legally display. But 4 would be nice. Can never go wrong with another 4 extra merlins.

  • my god, that sound, that sound!!! It sends shivers up the spine so it does

  • True. there is only 2 flying. The BOBM Lanc, and the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster, which is in Canada. Just Jane is also airworthy but money problems keep her on the ground.

  • If you think that was impressive, try flying in one! THAT is most impressive!

  • My favourite bomber, over Berlin naturally

  • Merlin... the sound of freedom...

  • My grandfather was a wireless controller in a lancaster in WWII. 101 squadron. Sadly he died 2 weeks ago. At his funeral today, everybody claims they heard a lancaster flying over the church. im not so sure.

  • I salute him!!

  • This past Father's Day weekend I got the honour of seeing this bad boy flying in formation with a mosquito bomber and two spitfires. Absolutely amazing sight, I don't think I will ever forget it.

  • *blinks and does a double-take* A Mosquito flying? Hmmm. There are very few Lancasters left that are airworthy - in fact, this might be the last one. Spitfires have done rather better, if I recall. This is a great pity, as not only do antique aircraft have much valuable history, but they also illustrate the experiments in early and middle aviation and still have much they can teach. They may also be quite practical in some areas - the Lancaster could carry a MOAB but few modern bombers can.

  • just to let you know (im not trying to be rude) but there are two lancasters flying last i heard

  • I have no objections to a legit correction, doubly so when it's good news, so I don't consider it rude at all but highly welcome and much appreciated.

  • we get the lancaster fly over our house every year because we live near the old hornchurch airfield :)

  • Keeling, you lucky bugger! :-D

  • I had an Uncle that survived flying these. I never knew until after his death what it was all about. The odds of returning. The pressing of that drop button. Wow, I wish I had him back to ask and record the history. VOTE PEOPLE! If not for the candidate for the people that made it possible.

  • i was there woot woot thats on the fathers day weekend!

  • A truly gorgeous aircraft, with an even more gorgeous soundtrack. Possibly the best noise in the world ever.

  • I use to live near northolt, this woud be the highlight of a year. I would sit outside the airfield on an electrical box and look over the fence, until the MOD chucked us off!

  • Im droolin Absolutely no sound like it anywhere else in the world an never wil be.

  • Gotta love That sound!! I wonder why VRA's rear turret was never fitted with twin .50 cal, like most CDN Mk X's?

  • i used to live in Hagersville............i miss that plane.lol

  • it sounds like 4 P-51s making a slow fly by together in formation. Nice vid!

  • Excellent vid! GREAT sound too!

  • I was one of the few who managed to ride it on Fathers Day in 2006 :)

  • Excellent up-close shot!
