I believe the sensors in the D3x and A900 are the same. The processing might be different. I mean, why would Nikon develop a brand new sensor with the same spec, if there was already one available off the shelf from Sony. And of course the D3x is a better camera than Sony, no comparison. The sensor is not everything. Just like Nikon F6 is better than Nikon F100, even if they are loaded with the same Velvia film.
Sony does the basic manufacturing of the sensor (big deal) Nikon massages the sensor after that. There isn't a professional photographer on the planet that can't tell that the D3x sensor is heads above the sensor in the Sony. The Sony 900 is not in the same league as the D3x plain and simple. Add the fact that the proprietary hot shoe on the sony doesn't accommodate several industry standard 2nd market items is just nuts! The 1dsIII is the only real competitor.
bol2pate---THE SENSOR IS IMPORTANT--the sensor captures the light which is then measured and converted into mathmatics--the sensor is important, and so are the cameras algorithims for changing math into color tone data

of course the sensor is important. but its less important how many pixels are on it

But that still depends whether the person loves Nikon or Sony...

This camera is NO WAY $8,000 better than my F4 or F5. Keep chasing them pixels...

the sensor doesn't do anything...
bol2pate 3 years ago
Yeah, just like film never does anything either.

if you have to have 24.5mp -- buy the sony -- same sensor -- better price
sasktank 3 years ago
Better price but it doesn't have a built in Vertical grip...
bingopine 3 years ago
then purchase vertical grip, still you have spare change.
