This video show no torture. It's 23 seconds long. Turtles can leave out of water for days on end. The turtle is used for food and is just left lying their until they are killed for food. I'm really disturbed by this. I love Grenada and didn't get a whiff of this sort of thing when I was there. I know I would have spoken up. This is not "normal". I would probably hav grabbed the turtles and raised holy hell with th fishermen. But I'm fearless in this sort of situation. My boyfriend would probably have dragged me off tho.
The fisherman were not entertained. They were making a living as done daily. Yes, we probably could have offered cash and saved the turtles that day, sorry. The fisherman did not appeciated our photo taking and certainly would not discuss their livelihood with foreign American tourists. They were not happy. Conflict was about to occur. We drove off quickly with fears of being chased. THE PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH THROUGH PROPER CHANNELS. If the video makes you angry, that's the point.

We don't agree with what was happening, but we can't haphazardly interfere with their culture. For reasons of respect & safety. Don't think for a second that it wasn't painful and emotional. Each Caribbean island has its own laws, despite the endangered/critically endangered status of sea turtles. In Carriacou the open season lasts from September to April. In other words, when this video was taken, it was legal to do anything to a turtle that led to its consumption. There is an NGO on the island however that pays fisherman for their turtles, then releases them, and from one of the comments below, that's what happened.
When I lived in Antigua, we did the same thing. Whether or not it was legal to kill the turtles wasn't the point -- we just wanted them back in the water. We were fortunate that we could offer the fishermen more for a live turtle than they could get at the market, so they came to us first. Sometimes, we bought the same turtle more than once. I'm sure they thought we were nuts, but that's a small price to pay to help conserve vanishing species.

The fisherman were not entertained. They were making a living as done daily. Yes, we probably could have offered cash and saved the turtles that day, sorry. The fisherman did not appeciated our photo taking and certainly would not discuss their livelihood with foreign American tourists. They were not happy. Conflict was about to occur. We drove off quickly with fears of being chased. THE PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE DEALT WITH THROUGH PROPER CHANNELS. If the video makes you angry, that's the point.

They put the turtle on their back so that they won't get away. I been here many times and I seen them kill pigs and goats and they never torture them. Now that I know they are hurting it, I agree that there are better ways to hold the turtles w/o laying them on their backs.You went close to them to take a video why not introduce your self and tactfully make them aware of what they are doing? As for me, if I ever witness that i would speak up, U said NOTHING, so it's going to happen again!

Thank you. This is for AWARENESS. There were 6 of us who witnessed this. It ruined our day. We vowed to raise attention. However, we were in a foreign land. We don't agree with what was happening, but we can't haphazardly interfere with their culture. For reasons of respect & safety. Don't think for a second that it wasn't painful and emotional. As stated before, my number one issue was the torture. I respect other issues but our pain came from looking into the living eyes of these turtles.

Each Caribbean island has its own laws, despite the endangered/critically endangered status of sea turtles. In Carriacou the open season lasts from September to April. In other words, when this video was taken, it was legal to do anything to a turtle that led to its consumption. There is an NGO on the island however that pays fisherman for their turtles, then releases them, and from one of the comments below, that's what happened.

When I lived in Antigua, we did the same thing. Whether or not it was legal to kill the turtles wasn't the point -- we just wanted them back in the water. We were fortunate that we could offer the fishermen more for a live turtle than they could get at the market, so they came to us first. Sometimes, we bought the same turtle more than once. I'm sure they thought we were nuts, but that's a small price to pay to help conserve vanishing species.

The push to stop sea turtle hunting,is not a condemnation of diet or culture, but a recognition that these species populations are at such low levels that hunting them is not sustainable.
