I took special pains to see Zappa on tour in 1973 or '74, at the Capitol Center sports arena, a hockey rink, outside of DC to the east -- and the sound was so muddy and echoing that the music couldn't be heard above the noise - a great disappointment, and it put me off Zappa for a long while - but now I can hear what I was missing back then, it's excellent actually :)
I taped this years ago on a "real old taperecorder when it was aired on the KRO radio back in 1976. And i used it together with Willie the Pimp to teach myself how to play the drums in a dark cellar in S61 youth centre in Roermond Holland. Those were the days!! GOLD!!!!!
@flinflong actually he's playing the "rhythm guitar" part. He's the one going "waaah whaka-chika-whaka-chika-whaka-chika..." in the b-ground. YOu can actually hear it better on the upgrade.
@flinflong Nope. He did what he was hired to do. Let Frank play, and come back into the mix when he is supposed to. You ever see Frank in concert? He orchestrates EVERYTHING! Down to each note.
@Django5198 Yes he did. in fact he recorded an album by a group of groupies called the GTO's (Girls Together Outrageiously). Not exactly recommended for the faint of heart. If you think Syd Barrett is a genius you might dig it.
@Django5198 its funny...saw him in cleveland 1971 with flo and eddie (guys from the turtles).i think he is playing my guitar i sold.but them are not my pajamas.

Only two guitarists can put shivers down my back, Frank Zappa and Alex Lifeson. Zappa and the Mothers had SOUL in their music. You just get caught up in it.
WOW! Where did you come up with this tape? Looks like it's from 3/4". Man I'd LOVE to have a high quality copy of this. Really good audio mix for a TV show, too. Wowwowowow. Thanks for posting!
Chad Wackerman on Drums. Zappa always said that he was his top 2 choice of Drummers. Ainsley Dunbar being the other one sounded like 3 people on drums. He was Amazing to, He liked them both. I loved them all.
Organised Chaos! Love it! Forgive me if I'm wrong but it seems to me that Frank dedicated his life to making a parody of a nation apon it would be ridiculous to take itself seriously. Great solo! Wow and he didn't start to playing guitar till he was 18yo! Awesome! I'm Zapped! RIP Frank....
Oh to see him stomping around on thoose lower frets so refreshing, his hand barely moves past the 12th fret and tou hear the music this man is making, unfortunately commercialism stifles geniuses like this. 1 OF THE BEST IMPROVES FROM FRANK EVER.
I was lucky enough to live through every iteration of Frank Zappa's career from Freak Out onward he was totally unique, incredibly talented in every musical respect and Dweezil has done an incredible job of paying respect to that and bringing his Dads genius into the present day,
He wasn't the most popular with the masses, but every musician from his day to today knows that Zappa was the best. His solos where usually over I-V or I-IV progressions (or, any variation thereof within the Cycle), but his solos are some of the most complex, though they are straight picking of the string (rather than other "technical" approaches). Then, there his compositional repertoire; a vast expanse of musical knowledge for any performer on any instrument: Zappa launched many careers.
i like how in the beginning he is keeping time for the drummer when he is doing the fill. he moves his arm up and down then from side to side 4 times. awesome :)
Frank...truly a "level 20" musician (that's the highest level in my music teaching...)
Yeah "Level 19" is the hardest to get past (extreme music ability, theory, and agility), like Steve Howe, Yngwie M., W. Mozart, etc. But "Level 20" is when you can play in any key, AND MAKE FUN OF THE MUSIC, TOO. Like "Klezmer music"! Use your instrument to TALK! If you can do this, you are a musical hero!
I would have hired Frank, if I had leaded a rock band, at the time, for a guest epic solo in one of my tracks, both live and on record. By the way, 4:37-4:55, it seems to me to notice some "willie the pimp" quoting
The sound of the band is more hot rats-like tuned without cpt. beefheart at vocals just as he came out through the accident that took him on a wheelchair for several months in the early '70s and the production of 2 albums meanwhile: Apostrophe and The Grand Wazoo.
