  • Best guitar ever!

  • that tone, wow, just..yeah

  • Epic Zappa solo, oh so FUNKY!!!!

  • Very good quality for very great song !

    Thanks dude

  • this is intense!!!!

  • zappa dosent reely PLAY guitar.......he just cind of fucks it.....

  • Was lucky enough to get to see Frank in concert in about 83 or 84. Such a genius! Miss him and still enjoy his music!

  • Must.....Watch....Solo.....Again....

  • awesome video!!!!

  • I took special pains to see Zappa on tour in 1973 or '74, at the Capitol Center sports arena, a hockey rink, outside of DC to the east -- and the sound was so muddy and echoing that the music couldn't be heard above the noise - a great disappointment, and it put me off Zappa for a long while - but now I can hear what I was missing back then, it's excellent actually :)

  • drummer from heaven

  • I taped this years ago on a "real old taperecorder when it was aired on the KRO radio back in 1976. And i used it together with Willie the Pimp to teach myself how to play the drums in a dark cellar in S61 youth centre in Roermond Holland. Those were the days!! GOLD!!!!!

  • what scales is he using for the solo?

  • Jean Luc Ponty doesn't know what to do during Frank's solo.

  • @flinflong actually he's playing the "rhythm guitar" part. He's the one going "waaah whaka-chika-whaka-chika-whaka-chika..." in the b-ground. YOu can actually hear it better on the upgrade.

  • @flinflong Nope. He did what he was hired to do. Let Frank play, and come back into the mix when he is supposed to. You ever see Frank in concert? He orchestrates EVERYTHING! Down to each note.

  • This is just sick. Always puts me in good mood! where the f@ck is music today ?

  • Dude....you killed me....missed the solo at the end....

  • I'm bipolar, I always loved Zappa, even with my strong pills I just go fuckin' high when I listen to this!

    AAAAAAAAAAmmmmaaaaaazzzziiiinnnnnggggg!

  • Do you have the entire show? And where is this from?

  • he tear down his guitar like a beast!

  • wonderful playing style!!!!

  • who's the 1 azzhole that disliked this??... u bastard!! RIP frankie... we still luv ya, u tweeky freak with a head like a potato, lips like a duck...

  • 3:25 Jean-Luc Ponty just standing there, staring at Frank ! Priceless.

  • Why this amazing song is NOT the official song of the sate of Montana?

    I need a #$%^&* explanation !

  • Deliciuos! I mean, what's Franksgiving without cranberry sauce?

  • delightful!

  • i realize he was not a druggie but I still think this song is a satire about heroin

  • @SoberAllmanBrosFan A bit of an anti-drugs song maybe?

  • @Django5198 Yea! because drugs are just cosmic debris (the most useless shit in the Universe)

  • @SoberAllmanBrosFan, medical mary jane?

  • lol I wonder if frank had any groupies!!!!!!!

  • @Django5198 Yes he did. in fact he recorded an album by a group of groupies called the GTO's (Girls Together Outrageiously). Not exactly recommended for the faint of heart. If you think Syd Barrett is a genius you might dig it.

  • @BognarRegis Don't forget that the Plaster Caster's started out as FZ groupies as well...

  • @Django5198

I guess so. I am one....

  • @Django5198 its funny...saw him in cleveland 1971 with flo and eddie (guys from the turtles).i think he is playing my guitar i sold.but them are not my pajamas.

  • @cletistheslackjawedy They could be my dads

  • Could anyone tell me the Year ? Zappa looks so young

  • @RyanLies 1973

  • @BognarRegis oh its in the headline Im sorry

    thx

  • @RyanLies

are you kiddin' its written above

  • lol at jean luc ponty's face right after zappa's monstruous solo ! he's like "shit, how am i supposed to play after THAT!!?!?"

  • Man, Zappa's guitar style is untouchable!!!

  • Arguably the best version of this great song I've heard. Ah, the Mothers.

  • there all looking at him at 3.06 cos its fuckin unbeievable

  • For Tina who loves oldies.. Love Zappa....

  • great fucking song. fantastic solo in this version. but i can't find the studio version anywhere. i'm pretty sure its not even on itunes either. i've looked. =(

  • @thecomfyshirt The studio version of Montana? It's on Overnite Senation.

  • I prefer this guitar solo than what Steve Vai did on the later live versions. Too many notes and a tastless tone.

  • this is the highest dude ever

  • excellent plaid outfit maestro..

  • I reckon the sound is better here. Either way, this is one of my favourite YT clips. God bless Swedish Broadcasting.

  • 2:58 Engage.

  • wow!compliments on the sound quality.

  • Frank snaps on this'n

  • Frank Zappa is the best. There's really no other way to put it. Amazing.

  • All Hail The Master Frank Zappa!

  • acoustics ?he still listening for the the sweet spot i think

  • Frank's such a genius that he took a couple of courses in music at a community college and then went on to write symphonies. He could write tablature for every instrument. Amazing.

  • Who is that on drums? He set the standard.

  • I keep coming back to this one...that solo, Frank, the best.

    The best band too...

  • Why did you fucking died Frank? İncredible playing...

  • This shit grabs you by the ears and force feeds bliss

  • ill' be bìn Rome for the 2° of june...shure he will not cacell . Hope...ciao

  • Best Zappa solo section ever.

  • he's mighty grand !

  • Awsome guitar solo, Frank Rules!!!

  • What a line up too! Saw Luc Ponty> amazing stuff here. Damn those were good times. love ya Frank.

pure genuis and you know Cheech n Chong took some purple barrel and listened to this!

  • I pick a person and send them a vido at random. from Slash or any other bands fans at random.I just say hers the best band u never heard in your life what u think Slash this comment back. Just to see if some people no the truth.F.Z. kicks ass.

  • after see this?

u must be one of the weirdos of todays

  • Only two guitarists can put shivers down my back, Frank Zappa and Alex Lifeson. Zappa and the Mothers had SOUL in their music. You just get caught up in it.

  • i have this video. Zappa is by far the best music ever.

  • So glad this version was recorded. My favorite version of Montana. Guitar solo is pure soul.

  • Mothers kicked ass, RIP Frank

  • I love it! Well done Frank and last but not least my favourite Jean-Luc Ponty. This is how I remember him at Jazz Club B-14 in Rotterdam!!!

  • WOW! Where did you come up with this tape? Looks like it's from 3/4". Man I'd LOVE to have a high quality copy of this. Really good audio mix for a TV show, too. Wowwowowow. Thanks for posting!

  • GENIUS........

  • I love the solo. Frank is awesome...

  • There's Zappa, and then there's everything else.

  • TRUE! I couldn't have said it better!

  • We need to change the our states anthem to this lol. Thanks Frank.

  • Absolutely brilliant, thanks for posting. We all need a little Zappa in our lives when times look gloomy.

  • Love u Frank. Especially for this piece. PEACE.

  • Zappa Was Amazingg

  • PLAID BITCHES!!!!!! Frank Zappa is God. Jimmy Page is God. Jeff Beck is God. Jimi Hendrix is God. David Gilmour is God.

and this version of montana almost kicks too much ass. mainly because of the solo.

    nuff said.

  • @LedZeppelinisgod100

don't forget clapton, he pratically was the 1st guitarist to be called GOD

  • @jferkfjkj yeah.....but he's a bit overrated when compared to the others, while Jeff Beck is severely underrated.

  • @jferkfjkj Clapton, hmmmm, isn't he the one who sold out and did beer commercials?

  • Chad Wackerman on Drums. Zappa always said that he was his top 2 choice of Drummers. Ainsley Dunbar being the other one sounded like 3 people on drums. He was Amazing to, He liked them both. I loved them all.

  • @pcpiratepete That's Ralph Humphrey on drums!

  • Born 10 years after this performance, i discovered Zappa by my 15 and ever since I listen this "Great Artist" everyday!

  • I can't believe I missed catching Zappa at the Hammersmith Palais in 1979 for the want of ten quid ! Doh! ;-(

  • Great version, but for some reason I like the version with Napoleon Murphy Brock on co-vocals even more.

  • Organised Chaos! Love it! Forgive me if I'm wrong but it seems to me that Frank dedicated his life to making a parody of a nation apon it would be ridiculous to take itself seriously. Great solo! Wow and he didn't start to playing guitar till he was 18yo! Awesome! I'm Zapped! RIP Frank....

  • This should have a million views.

  • I love how he kicks his wah wah in at 3:12 and you see Jean-Luc just standing there waiting for his cue to come in

  • I would love to have this Version of Montana on CD

My Favorite Guitar playin of Frank is on the Roxy and Elsewhere Record on the tracks Son of Orange Country & More Trouble Every Day

  • Oh to see him stomping around on thoose lower frets so refreshing, his hand barely moves past the 12th fret and tou hear the music this man is making, unfortunately commercialism stifles geniuses like this. 1 OF THE BEST IMPROVES FROM FRANK EVER.

  • I was lucky enough to live through every iteration of Frank Zappa's career from Freak Out onward he was totally unique, incredibly talented in every musical respect and Dweezil has done an incredible job of paying respect to that and bringing his Dads genius into the present day,

  • I seriously envy you. I'm trying to catch up, but still it ain't the same. That guy was one of a kind.

  • I love how he goes completely ballistic during the solo. R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

  • He wasn't the most popular with the masses, but every musician from his day to today knows that Zappa was the best. His solos where usually over I-V or I-IV progressions (or, any variation thereof within the Cycle), but his solos are some of the most complex, though they are straight picking of the string (rather than other "technical" approaches). Then, there his compositional repertoire; a vast expanse of musical knowledge for any performer on any instrument: Zappa launched many careers.

  • A million million Thanks! for posting this video-o!!!!! You're a good man/woman/whatever.

  • Einfach unmuglich! Fuckin' perfect!

I've listened to that shit about 1000 times in last 10 years!

Still amazing! One of the best solos!

  • Yippy-Ty-O-Ty-Ay!!!

  • Im movin to montana

  • I want franks pants

  • AHHHHH!!!!!!! Good God, ain't it funky now!!

  • Jean-Luc Ponty?

  • this is incredible footage R.I.P Frank Zappa

  • fucking awesome!!!

  • i like how in the beginning he is keeping time for the drummer when he is doing the fill. he moves his arm up and down then from side to side 4 times. awesome :)

  • haha...I never noticed that :)

  • FZAmazing ! Thank You !

  • Frank...truly a "level 20" musician (that's the highest level in my music teaching...)

Yeah "Level 19" is the hardest to get past (extreme music ability, theory, and agility), like Steve Howe, Yngwie M., W. Mozart, etc. But "Level 20" is when you can play in any key, AND MAKE FUN OF THE MUSIC, TOO. Like "Klezmer music"! Use your instrument to TALK! If you can do this, you are a musical hero!

  • this has got to be one of the most apeshitedness things ever

  • Amazing, that's amazing, for Frank's sakes

  • Smarter than the average rockstar!

  • absolute quality

  • 5:30 reminds me of some sort of Irish jig. So great!

  • haha great facial expressions

hes into it during that improv

    zoned

  • What a genius ! even his dress rules !!

  • Man i just Loove the Guitar playing Style that Frank Zappa had from 1973 to 1977

I wish this Version of Montana would be on CD

One of his best Bands togheter with the Roxy Band and the 1977 Band with Terry Bozzio and Patrick O Hearn

  • Oh Fuck me...I loves the YOUTUBES!!!!

  • me to

  • killer shit.

  • I would have hired Frank, if I had leaded a rock band, at the time, for a guest epic solo in one of my tracks, both live and on record. By the way, 4:37-4:55, it seems to me to notice some "willie the pimp" quoting

  • Knocked my socks off!! Thanks for posting this!

  • Ohh Man. Sure don't make 'em like that anymore.

    Excellent.

  • gourge duke

  • Sound quality is GOOD ! ! ! ! ! !

  • FZ deserves 6stars!

    what a talent.

  • nice pants Frank

hey i be raising my lonelly patch of herbal floss cuz yeah nice pants Frank nice threads in general man

    i digg it

enjoyabel version of this song to Frank

  • haha. what an odd performance of this song, and the band. oh man, classy stuff.

  • The sound of the band is more hot rats-like tuned without cpt. beefheart at vocals just as he came out through the accident that took him on a wheelchair for several months in the early '70s and the production of 2 albums meanwhile: Apostrophe and The Grand Wazoo.

  • Bloody epic brilliance.

    Love the Zappa. <3

  • incredible jam out

  • Wow, they played that at a television show! Imagine something like that today! Impossible...today it's all about dancing fools, heh heh.

Great solo by FZ, great performance by ...everybody! Killer clip! 5 Stars!

  • nice song reference. +1 lol

  • @Ulfinho13 Keep in mind that this was in Sweden, I doubt they would've played this on tv in North America even in '73 when it was current.
