Saw these guys on BBC Breakfast this morning and it reminded me that the ladies Barbershop chorus I used to sing with appeared on it (light green dresses with white bows, Yuk!!). We had to shoot our bit of the vid and learn the words of the whole song in one evening but, if you blink.... you'll miss us.
@MrGaserf so being able to drink yourself into a stupor and suffer no ill effects is a good thing? well thats another thing the english tax payer pays for, liver diseased scottish filth !
scottish music is shit! the scottish are crap at everything, even their women come down to england for some real loving! they cant even feed themselves without us english subsidising them! lets face it they get free prescriptions, free university tuition and us english even pay the taxes on their buckfast ffs! hahahaha
@TheStevo75 and were crap at everything ? yeah says the guy who's people riot and try to smash up their cities ? clearly you need to go home and rethink your wasted excuse of a life lol
@TheStevo75 Once again you live up the expectations of total failure. your calling others Nazi's and yet you say that blacks from England aren't English people ? and to add to the failure you clearly didn't watch the news during the riots. it was everyone from tracksuit clad hooligans to the middle-aged and parents actually taking their children out to loot. white and black.
oh well. considering you cant have come from anything more than failed abortion I suppose failure is all you know.
@TheStevo75 failed abortion? hahahahaha when you were born the midwife slapped your mom instead of your arse, the best part of you ran down your nans leg hahahahaha, the after birth they threw in the bucket had more going for it that you hahahahaqha!
Great song...so sad the band isn't together any longer...R.I.P. Stuart Adamson...another of our favorites is "In A Big Country" we play every time we cross the border in and out of Canada!
this band was prob my favourite and still are one of my favs, but this song wasn't one of there best still it's better than almost all of the pop/chart music we have now
@Grichal1981 .....SIGH** Marketing my Dear.... IT does not make it no less a great song for it's passing, because I recognize it as so, and you do as well, and we are lucky for knowing it so! GB(GodBless)
now wait a sec, american football team in a scottish song ? I mean nothing wrong about that, just the whole video seems like some kind of scottish pride
Big Country were genius. These guy's are the proverbial every-man's group they could relate with average work-a-day people. Their lyrics and music are powerful, full of intense meaning and great messages. I'll never tire of listening to them.
What has happened to modern music, why don't groups write and perform like this anymore? What has happened to conscientious music? Does anyone still give a damn?
@n8tureboy talent is not required any more. Just the ability to babble a bunch of incoherent negative bullshit about how hard life is for the lies of emininem and such. Plus no one has to bother to actually take the time to learn to play an instrument or hone thir craft like bands in the old days they want their x factor and idol stuff handed to them
Agreed! We've become a fast-food culture. We want it now and we want it cheap.
Unfortunately, good food (music) takes time to prepare and it comes at an expense.
We've gotten fat and happy with all this cheap, cynical culture and guess what? If we don't change our habits, just like fast food , it's gonna' kill us eventually.
When I look around these days I see the walking dead. I'm an optimist, but I'll confess society is in steep decline,IMO.
How do you manage to get these official videos on youtube when there are others that still have links and just won't play due to "copyright" crap or whatever? I mean you'd think In a Big Country would be here, but it's not.
the lyrics of this song speak to all those who have seen war (civil or otherwise) first hand. we should all strive for peace in the world. as well as in our lives.
I always love BC's tremendous power, optimism and hope. I was devastated when I learned that Stuart Adamson killed himself. RIP to a friend I never met, and one I hope to one day.
BC had a conscience just listen to those awesome lyrics. Why don't groups write music like this anymore? It seems that today's music is so debased and cynical.
remember we shot some St trinians girls at the london restaurant school dinners. But they don't seem to have made the cut. Although me and another crew member did get two of them in bed! I've never seen this clip before. Happy days! Cameraman was Adrian Wilde.
OMG I worked on this video in Sept 86. Director was Storm Thorgeson. Only thing I remember was going all over the country during the course of a week filming the groups of singers. First one was the steam engine guys which took forever and we didn't think we'd get them all done. Miners were in Kent. Swimmers in Dover. Guys on a boat down in Cornwall.
@berniemaupin I bet it was fantastic! i loved this band...this song is great but i think in a big country is just their best song, i know everyone says that too but i think it is. its too bad stuart is gone, now ill never get to see them in concert.
If there's one great thing to happen in my life.... let it be the time for peace, let it be a time of right. Legendary, Stuart was a great man, its a shame he couldn't find a way out of his darkness, i guess thats what this cruel world did to him. Did so much in his life, sadly missed.
I'd kill myself too if I only had one hit in my carreer...These lil local songs are just that...local...I gauge him by his success in America(everybody does!) and that success is JUST ONE HIT!!!
BC r the best. love them. This is one of those songs, like was already mentioned, that you have to play loudly in the car...especially around areas where people blast out all kinds of other stuff...:).
I used this song for a form assembly :D didn't look at how everyone was reacting to it...just enjoyed it :D

An excellent video to what I consider to be Big Country's most positive song from their most positive-sounding album, "The Seer". This is such an uplifting track, and makes an interesting comparison to the tracks on the "Steeltown" album. I want "One Great Thing" to be played at my funeral, it really is that good.
I saw them doing a gig from the second floor of Tower Records in Glasgow. They were only there to do 3 songs from their new album but just kept going. In the end up the police had to shut off Argyle Street for 2 Hours.. I was at the door of the pub right across from it. They are sadly missed Due to Stuart's death
I'm spanish and we are having enough of that Vasque murderers... you cannot understand this if you don't live it. Don't care about Scottish / English issues, hate frontiers. BIG COUNTRY where great and that's all ;)

Wow - I've always loved this song but had never seen this video before. This has to be the best one I've seen for any of their songs -- it really captures the spirit (and especially the humor) of the song and the band, and avoids all those gruesomely dated '80s fashions in most of the early ones.
