  • I've used bootcamp and parallels i think that parallels is much better because you can have windows and mac os open at the same time. the latest parallels does not lag on 3d games because blue xephos uses it on his battlefield game and it runs smoothly

  • pirate bay blocked in finland... :((

  • I should have really done my homework before buying parallel, a total waste of money when I could have just downloaded boot camp for free. :(

  • If there are multiple users on an iMac, and I install bootcamp, (already have parallels) does it mess up parallels, and does all users have access to the windows once boot camp is installed? Thanks.

  • Thanks for the review. This has help me decide a little further. My intent is to have a windows partition for gaming purposes but utilized the great threads of a Mac.

  • Boot Camp functionality relies on BIOS >>"emulation" << through EFI and a partition table information synchronization mechanism between GPT and MBR combined.

  • good job...

    I like It...

  • how borring u were a long time ago

  • Great vid. Answered all my queries. Cheers.

  • That helps a lot, thanks : )

  • Omg john back in the day no way

  • So basically Im thinking of "adding" windows 7 mostly for gaming, so I should use Bootcamp right?

  • @TheMightyGurkin Okay. Thanx :)

  • @NorwegianAppletard yup, it works perfect, nd its free :)

  • @animefreek619 Yeah, but the annoying thing is to having to restart the computer everytime .. :P And the fact that I've got like 20GB of storage left.. ^^

  • i miss this fresh faced jon!...he's still the same ..i knw ..and maybe we have the jon we have today because he has much better equipment and he has to speak louder to a higher def cam

  • can u use windows cds

    like for pinnacle studios installation

on the windows side of bootcamp

  • What about Visual studio?

I will be doing a lot of C++ and Java at school... so which option is better for me?

It's nothing extremely heavy per say, but i'd like something smooth that will work, without sacrificing the great machine that my mac is. Suggestions?

PS- Can parallel use all of the MBP recourses if I choose to run windows only, or do you HAVE to run Lion in order to run W7?

  • Thanx bro! Help me out alot! Give you a hug if I had a chance. I HOPE MW3 and BF3 can run on the windows bootcamp cuz MW2 and black ops is good. Oh and should I get MW3 and BF3 via stream? Or cd? Help :/

  • Can you use USB with parallels?

  • i have parallels 6 and i hate it

  • @cpthemonstergamer why's that?

  • So would you be able to get a virus when using these?

  • @CollateralDamageHD of course. viruses aren't exclusive to windows machines. even if they were yes you'd get viruses running windows on a laptop branded as a mac.

  • with boot camp you can switch between mac os x and windows xp and dragging files to another ?

and can you get viruses in your mac , having windows in it ?

i want to put windows xp om my 13" macbook pro and i can't choose one , some help please :)

  • @theNerdGamer88 if you have lepord or newer, go with boot camp but as for viruses : not that i know of. files: you cant copy files in boot camp but you can in parallels

  • @drew700boo thanks man , that helped a lot really :)

  • If I were to buy a 500gb external hard drive, is there a way for me to set Boot Camp up to where it just uses all of that hard drive and nothing from the mac itself?

  • Does anybody know the minimum amount of hard drive you can allocate to windows with boot camp?

  • @joshua12484 5gb

  • This seems pretty cool :o I can't believe a lot of people are saying Mac sucks... Mac OS X, I am not so sure about, I don't like it much when I use it at school, but being able to run Windows 7, Linux, AND Mac OS X on a single computer, or being able to run Win7 and Mac OS X at once, would be pretty freaking awesome. Also, I have a question, does Bootcamp cost any money?

  • @theif519 Bootcamp is free and comes with the Mac OS.

  • windows could def run osx, but apple would sue if that happened

  • Comment removed

  • Btw my name is jon too :)

  • First off very nice review answered just what I wanted. If I end up getting a Mac I will most likely use bootcamp because it's free and buy windows 7 home premium.

To the person below, I'm pretty sure you can get a virus. Not quite sure how it would affect your hard drive as a whole including both partitions, as in if it would affect Mac if you got it on windows and vise versa.

  • Hey John I know some one asked you this but when your on your Windows Partition and your Mac is running as a PC can you get a virus or will it not do anything ?

  • anyone know how to fix the boot camp error, " This disk cannot be supported"?

  • hey my Mac G5 does not have bootcamp it is OSX 10.5.8 so how can i do to install windows in it

    please help

i bought it couple years ago

  • @sxayaxang You would need to get Virtual PC for your G5 but it is very slow.

  • can i install knock off 3d max 2011 and vray on windows 7 on a mac, using bootcamp? any problems encountered. will intel i7 mac prohibit pirated programs, even if im gonna use these programs in windows 7? i'm so eager to know. thanks!

  • Could a virus on windows while running bootcamp or parallels effect your Mac par of the computer

  • @jackinator16 viruses on windows wont affect the mac. or thats what ive heard

  • @jackinator16 It can if your Mac partition is write enabled. Using bootcamp, it is read only unless you install third party software to enable write.

  • Autocad questios?

My answer is: If your doubt is wish is better?

All depends whats your computer capacity, to run AutoCAD with 3d, Revit or any heavy software, you need at least 2gb and some times at least 3gb of ram.

If your Mac only have a total of 4gb of ram, the recommend option will be bootcamp, that way your Mac will be using the total 4gb to run AutoCAD because the Mac won't be sharing ram memory with the virtual pc (parallels).

But if you have enough ram memory to share with parallels

  • i have a question...how bout viruses??

  • Thanx a lot bro for clarifying such differences between both of them. Good Luck!

  • I'm sitting here enjoying my sandwich, while you talk about a lot of things that I already know... I waste my life xD

  • can i install both bootcamp and parallels?

  • @kionaki86 yes, since parallels is an application, and bootcamp is a partition of the harddisk.

  • Hello, I´m a college student at the University of Colima, in México, i´m studying for Geomatics and Land Surveying Engineer, anyway, I use a lot of Windows programs beacuse of the compatibility issues ( But I´m a big Mac fan), especially I use AutoCAD, which in simple terms is Computer Asisted Drafting, my question to you is: ¿¿¿VmWare the best way to go when it comes to Emulators???

  • what about ur video editors would they be good 4 parallels

  • can someone tell me if when you install parellels does your mac itself get laggy or is it only when parellels is on? thanks

  • Great explanation! Thanks.

Can I load parallels 5 if bootcamp and windows xp already exist on my mac?

  • lol most common question about macs is running windows on a mac....

  • How can I install parallels if I have vistal alredy installed with bootcamp

  • Parallels, vmware , and virtual box all run on Linux Ubuntu ...

I use and I have ran 3DS Max , and Maya in them and it works just fine...

  • I have Bootcamp and Parallels. However, my Parallels will only start up if I disable NIVIDIA drivers, Uknown stuff, or Apple stuff. I am able to work with any application except any programs that need NIVIDIA drivers or videogames. So when I need to play games or use any program that need NIVIDIA drivers than i go to Bootcamp.

  • if im gonna use Autocad and 3D max what would you recomend, bootcamp or parallels?

  • @Dryfdier I was wondering about this myself - autocad

  • ah ...

  • would I be able to run both?

  • Is it possible to download Parallels if you already Installed Windows on Bootcamp?

  • if windows 7 is installed with parallels on my mac is there a way to install it through bootcamp without uninstalling everything and reusing the windows key?

  • Nice comparison. I actually prefer Bootcamp. I actually tried running Crysis under Parallels, and it was seriously lagging, so I went the Bootcamp route.

  • Nice post bud. Cheers

  • BootCamp runs XP on my macbook and i have to say that it is exactly like using any o'll PC, you even get the Blue Screen of Death from time to time!

  • hmmmmm....i chooseeee both!

  • Parallels is basically... Mac OS X's Virtual PC. if anyone remembers that, then yeah... it's like the same shit except more powerful. I say BootCamp wins.

  • Is there a risk of getting all sorts of viruses using bootcamp?

I would like to load up XP on my Imac to play some PC games. I also don't want to go online to register it, cos I could got viruses just doing that, I don't plan on using the internet at all with the old XP I'd load up.

    Any thoughts?

  • @Neanderthalcouzin oh wow, never thought of that. viruses using bootcamp, wow. I'm curious too...

  • Hi. I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a white mac book and want to install windows XP but the problem is I have no CD's for the mac book as the guy didn't send them when I bought it and isn't around anymore!! How can I find the drivers etc that windows needs to run the keyboard, webcam, usb ports etc etc. thanks for any help

  • @Macinabit go on the apple website on support u should find it there boot camp drivers

  • @psp2333 Hi. OK I will give it a go and see if I can pick up the drivers for this spec of mac book. Just firing up an old G4 Mirros at the moment and installing 10.5.4 fun times!!!!! Thanks for your help

  • i have the same problem i dont know how to get the cd.. or else i wud buy it

  • @Playitallnightlong I have looked in Apple home page under support but it has for models around 2008 and mine is early 2009. When you look in the details of your macbook it will show the version number some are 2,9 3,2 etc and mine is 5,3 so I can't see it anywhere but there must be "some" way of getting the drivers!!

  • i have a macbook pro 15inch i just got it this past august 2009.

But whats better if i get the windows cd parallels or boot camp?

  • I have used both and I still have parallels in the original box, I used it once and took it off my mac pro as it slows windows XP down a hell of a lot. If i was you I would use boot camp which as you is pre installed with leopard that way when you use XP you are getting all the ram and Graphics card 100% not 25% as with parallels, if you have a windows CD at hand try the boot camp it works well and is very easy to take off if you don't ike it. Regards.

  • wait you can take it off and get all your space and memory that it took back rite?

  • correct, just go back into bootcamp again where you have a "Slider" to form the amount of partition you want to dedicate to XP and it will have remove or reset etc it's as easy as that. I am getting a 500gB hard drive for my Mac Book so I will wait untill then. Windows seven sounds good but it's very expensive to buy off the shelf!!!

  • now here is a beautiful feature and why i love mac... lol... if you setup your bootcamp.... parallels can actually run it... so what i did is i am running parallels whenever i want to use windows programs that aren't very demanding but i can just swap over to my other os using bootcamp for games. best of both worlds.

  • @beavin247

Can I load parallels 5 if bootcamp and windows xp already exist on my mac?

  • @beavin247

Hi, I am using boot camp and I would like to use parallel desktop WITH boot camp as you say. The problem is I don't know how . I have PD6 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Windows 7 on Boot Camp. Please help. Thanks!!

  • Thanks! Really needed to know that.

  • Once you make the initial partition can you change it?? or is it set like that forever?? and if you add on harddrive space to your computer can you also partition this??

  • bootcamp and parralels are both diferent.

we need the windows os instalation cd for bootcamp, which costs more than the parallels cd.

bootcamp is my option because i wana play pc games :P

  • for parallels, why would you drag something from one os to the next? if you can open it in a running os why bother transferring it to the other os to open it? it's like having say a PlayStation and going next door to play their PlayStation. Honestly, what am i missing from this, and since mac can do just about everything windows can, the only sensible reason to put windows on a mac is through bootcamp for games. Unless i really am missing something that parallels offers that i'm not getting.IDK

  • Mac can't run 3ds max.

  • k, thnx for the note. don't know what else to say, but thnx again. least now i know of one.

  • it does but it depends on what 3dsmax version you're trying to run in your mac... :)

  • Yes it can

  • I have a couple of questions...

    1. Can you have both parellels and boot camp on the mac at the same time?

    2. Can you do everything a windows can do in parellels?

    3. If you had boot camp windows for certain applications, do you have to reinstall them to the parellels windows? or can they work together?

  • Hey dude,

i totally agree with the fact that dragging from one os to another is stupid. but putting windows on a mac is awesome so you can have the best of pc/mac.. so you can use windows only programs.. and lots of people want to try windows 7.

  • k, what is the best of windows other than games which i would recommend using bootcamp for.

  • Well windows 7 is very fast.. im running it right now, with windows there are lots of cool features. and it it is better for hacking :D.

  • ok, i made the partition, be sure to format your partition to be able to install

its a quit long process, i took like 1 hour and a half

    a had en error

when the computer restarts, DO NOT press any key when it says "press any key to run cd/dvd", haha

otherwise you´ll have to do everything all over again, just let it continue with the installation.

  • yep I did that jejeje put my foot in it up to the knee, good fun though and helps you learn things faster next time!!!!

  • i didnt have my mac cd, so i tried downloading all the drivers separately, not a good idea, just get your mac os cd, when i got home i installed the drivers from campboot and everything was great. ive got a macbook pro 13 with 4gb of ram and 250 gb of HD, nvidia 9400, and i got 4.2 in windows rating!!!!, i was expecting more. definitely, mac os 10.6.1 is better than windows 7, in nearly every aspect (just not compatibility and programs).

  • So what you are saying is you made a partition using bootcamp and then installed windows!!! you didn't need the second CD that comes with the mac book pro to install the drivers on the windwos platform?. I have a Mac Book and NO cd's with it and I want to put xp on using bootcamp but I always thought you need the second CD with all the drivers etc?. regards

  • great info, i just subscribed,

i have a doubt, how fast is gaming on parallels?, i mean i undesrstand its obviously not as fast as in bootcamp, but how fast is not as fast?

anyways im installing windows 7 next monday (its until monday cus i get free windows7 at school). I´ll post a comment with all details or upload a video response.

  • you hold the opyion key [atl]

  • 3 questions.

    1. so... is bootcamp free??

    2. if i use bootcamp, that means that it uses all 4 gigs of ram and 2.53 GHz as if i had like a superfast pc?

    3. i have a 250 gb external hard drive. if i wanted to use bootcamp to run windows xp on my mac, could i save all of the stuff to the hard drive? like, i could dedicate 250 gigabytes of memory to my windows? and i could save the windows OS to the hard drive?

sorry for the confusing message... thanks! please respond...

  • 1. Yes it's free

    2. Yes it works just like that.

    3. You can only dedicate 80% of your HD to windows.

  • need help please: i bought music from the itunes store on my windows partition but i wana move it to my os x itunes nd i dno if its possible but if it is plz can someone tell me how.

  • just get it on a USB while you are on your windows and put your USB in when you are on MAC...??

  • jon., how about playing 3d games on boot camp windows xp on mac.. pls reply

  • its so funny seeing how back then jon actually had a set of nuts and he wasnt such a lovable tool like he is now. dont get me wrong, this guys the shit and of course i subscribe, but dude havnt you guys noticed back in the day jon sounded just....cooler because he wasnt aware he had such an audience.

  • I use VirtualBox. It's free & just as fast as Parallels or VMware

  • @beejm90 May i have some help? When i launch virtualbox it comes up wit han error screen that the windows users name "the blue screen of death" but how can i fix this? any advice?

  • @beejm90 I use pirate bay. it is just as fast and its free.

  • does windows come with paralles

  • No, parallels desktop costs $79

  • can you get the all the windows programs with paralles

  • I have Parallels 4 ( P4) on a Mac pro 6ghz ram.. it can be very slow..I also have a video program that does not work on P4 + was told it will only work in B/C

    Can I run a seprate B/C + P4 on 1 computer? do i need 2 downloads of xp?

    I hav 2 int'l drives,can i run B/C on 1drive and P4 on my master

Can I access B/C from P4 w/o having to reboot.?know anything about that ? am i just going back to my slow paralles + not being to run my video program?

    4) to install B/C do i have to uninstall P4?

  • how do i get my internet working on bootcamp?????!?!?!

  • Did u install the Driver's ..?

  • i think so im really not sure... i just installed the windows xp disk as less than 40gigs or whatever is less than .fat or watever...

  • Start Windows, and put your OSX Disc 1 (That came with your Computer) in your CD Drive, and install the Drivers.

  • windows on boot camp almost sucks, sound is so poor, it still has graphic adapter problems, and for 64 bit vista its still problematic on boot loader. so i would recommend virtual machine solution for who insist on using windows, but using Mac OS X is one of the best sides of an Apple which i would never loose!

  • Sound good

  • so all you have to do is buy and install parallels and you can run windows on your mac?

  • if you use windows from parallels how good is the speed ? is it very slow?

  • You said that windows runs flawlessly on bootcamp.... Wrong my friend! I tried windows via bootcamp and I must warn you of the poor sound quality. I am talking major glitches and crackles which, if you compose music like I do, can be really annoying. According to the mac forums its because bootcamp is only a beta version. Trouble is I hear that there are no plans yet to release a full stable version.

  • can i ask a question? do i have to buy a disk of xp or i just go on my spotlight and type in bootcamp and then download it? coz my friend said i need a disk please help. thanks.

  • u need to buy xp home edition service pack 2 or more and then boot camp is automaticlly on ur mac

  • something you should know with paralles your mic dosent work (its quite as a mouse) and your webcam dosent work at all

  • You make really good reviews. Keep up the good work. This was helpful.

  • Will gaming work on 32GB of RAM?

  • wtf 32gb !? that's sickkkkkkk0+

  • Ya, the Macpro can have up to 32 GB of ram and a 10,000 GB hardrive.

  • Um, the Mac Pro can have up to 12 GB of RAM and four terabytes of hard drive-ness. It has four bays for hard drives, each holding a hard drive up to one terabyte. If you have 32 GB of RAM and a 10-terabyte hard drive, you got it customized somewhere besides Apple, in which case you could have those specs on quite a few other computers.

  • No, because you can do that at Apple when custmizeing it. Go to Apples site.

  • I still think you're lying. I maxed out a Mac Pro just a couple days ago for fun and it came to just over $25,000, and I could've sworn it had 12 GB of RAM. I just did it again to check your side of the argument, and sure enough there was an option of 32 GB of RAM (for an extra $9,100). But as for 10 Terabytes of HDD... there's still only 4 bays for HDD's, each only up to 1 Terabyte. Besides, if you had a computer that powerful you would be doing stuff besides games (like launching spacecraft).

  • I need the Ram for The Sims 2 and Grand Theft Auto IV with its setting maxed out. And the sims 2 full coletion! Plus Sims 3

  • lol dude u dont even need that much,i would say about 4 gb of ram will work

  • great review!

    thanks a lot

  • i know that bootcamp runs vista but with what vista system does it run basic, home premuim, or ultimate?

  • all of the above, i run vista home premium,

  • Great review! Love it~

  • i thought Parallels cuz do what bootcamp duz, it can go full screen on windows right?

  • yup

  • nice review... well explained. Thankx for letting me deside... cheers

  • can i uninstall bootcamp once i install it, incase i switch to parallels(so i can get my harddrive space back)?

  • yes you can

  • Thanks

  • can we make the new windows os use an external hard drive

  • all i have is the xp update disk that came with the xp home edition pack. will it still work with parallels and/or bootcamp

  • i used the reinstall vista basic disc and i worked in parallels, so yours should work.

  • I have a question. If you are using bootcamp and are running Windows...how do you reboot it to run Mac os X again? I've been having this problem for a while...

  • press the alt/opt button after restarting the mac

  • hold cntrl(or alt forget which one) when you start ur mac.

  • In Parallels, you can simply drag a mac file to windows and it will automatically change it so that it's compatable for windows, and vice-virsa?

Well what about in Bootcamp? What's the process for doing the same thing?

What about 'tricky' files, such as large Illustrator or Photoshop files?

    Thanks for the help!

  • I think the thing that I like most about bootcamp is that I can hibernate windows and then start up OSX, and then I can shut down OSX and windows will still be there

  • what about vmfusion?

  • Should you backup before bootcamp, i don't have backup drive (yet!)

  • i use solidWorks (a 3d design package) on windows at the moment. will this work as quikly in parallels as it does on my pc?

  • boot camp would be better. just because it actually turns ur mac into a windoze machine. jon explains this in his vid

  • so with boot camp you can put on applications that only work on windows?

  • yes

  • ok here's a question. i have a windows laptop now and i am planning to buy a black macbook. i also have boughten the download for microsoft office 2007 (word, excel, powerpoint, and onenote). it came with a cd in the mail for something that i dont know of. im guessing its a backup. can i put that on my parallels on my macbook so that i can use my 2007 office on my macbook?

  • i want to be able to play .exe's and i want to be able to use certain microsoft programming tools. boot camp is the best choice, right?

  • hey i wanna get fruity loops on ma mac is parrells good or music production programs? i wanna be able to easily tranfers files frmo mac to the pc system

  • parallels supports dx8.1 only, which is like 2003.

you can still play new games but you won't get any eye candy

  • is it jus me.... or do you sound like foreman from That 70's Show?!??!

  • Foreman's voice is higher.

  • Yea, I noticed that too.

  • I 2 am a new subscriber and i 1 question. "Can u get viruses through BootCamp?" Please answer this question. Like the movies and I suggest u check out a person called "the creative one" on YouTube. Very much like you

  • yes you can get viruses through bootcamp but not sure if it affects the mac partition. i think it does affect the whole disk, you can defiantly get a virus, but im not 100% sure on that one.

  • A partition splits the hard drive in a sense. If you split it and install XP on one half and OSX on the other and try to transfer files will it let you? No. Partitions are a change cannot be removed completely. You can adjust the ammount of space each has, but you cannot transfer files from one side to the other, so a virus shouldn't go onto the other partition ;)
