After 4 weeks those should of been large radishes with actual radishes. stay away from Miracle gro. The nutrients are synthetic and lock up in the soil to where the plant cannot access them correctly which is why your radishes did not grow like crazy. Plus it looked like it was way to wet. I grow radishes and in 3 weeks they are over 7 inches tall and the leaves are as large as romaine lettuce leaves and all I use is Epsoma organic fertizlier which has pasturized chicken. Miracle Gro is junk
Sorry for so many replies but I kept receiving error messages. I tried to post links to two other Youtube videos on making a Low and High Tunnel which is a man made green house, but it wont let me. So look up "Growing Wisdom" and look up videos for "low tunnel" and "high tunnel" on Youtube.
Also stocking up on spices is also a good way to get through having to eat all those canned foods. Even with some thing as bad as MRE's, they can taste quite well with the proper seasoning. Or and you could grow your own spices.
To compliment your survival video may I suggest growing in cold weather a man made green house which can be very small or large. All that is needed is plastic and some form of wood or metal to create a frame. For your survival theme I would think it would make sense to do it. I am not promoting his site, only his idea as well as yours. Good luck.
I hate spinich (Although if nothing else to eat I am sure I would have no problem eating it.) but I love it's leaves. I prefer baby spinach even to a regular head of lettace. I wonder how the radish leaves would taste. Also interesting about the green onions. I use every thing from them, but the very end tip and the very front tip. I wonder if the tiny white head would grow by it self opposed to the big piece you stuck in the ground.
I like this series, I will only be commenting on this video though. I liked it and I came to this series due to I live in an apartment off the 1st floor and with a large over hang that blocks most of the sun. Good for shade, not for vegetables. I came here expecting a little more for what I was looking for, but still learned some things just the same.
The red root part of the radish is suppose to be a nutritional light-weight, so it makes sense to eat the green leafs, where all the nutrition is. Nice demo series on the container gardening. BTW, I can't beleive that you would sit down and eat a whole can of "Treat" in one sitting! You better include some Lipitor in your supplies.
All of those are a great idea. I think its good to plant a good number of those but I'm planting other stuff too. I'll eat the greens while I wait on my corn, tomatoes, eggplant and watermelons.
Great advice on foods to grow, except cabbage is crap.
Kayle is the king as far as nutritional density. I did a lot of research on this when I had Iguanas lol, started eating their food. Then I started growing it to save money. Kayle loves cold weather and does well in hot to. Chard usually does better than spinach by volume, but I don't know about shaded areas. If it is pretty cool you should sprout the stuff inside.
clover ,also violets are ediable greens and not so fussy about light or soil if needed ,just like dandilion are,let a few of your dried beans sprout also a good quick Fresh nutritional sorce, I got a dehydrator and grabbed specails at store on veggys to prossess along with my garden harvest, spinch did not grow here either BTW ! half harvest to other years due to weather problems but still had plenty to dehydrate in storage, paid for itself 3 X over cost and food is portable, incuding jerky 4 soups
Ramen has no nutritional value. Soba noodles are just as cheap and have nutrition, not to mention better taste without the Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) most are allergic to. MSG is survival's enemy.
Ramen has complex carbohydrates and sodium which is important in survival situations. There are brands of Ramen that garauntee less than 1% MSG content. On a side note, there have been no conclusive studies that show that MSG is detrimental to your overall health.
One package of ramen and a can of vegetables or some freshly harvested vegetables can feed two people comfortably, and provide a good balance of carbs for energy, and vitamins for healthy system.
WOW. generic SPAM? had to save that 3/4 of a penny? (i've got some of that same salad dressing in my fridge,Paul Newman makes some kick-ass dog treats too)
With my Tomatos that I grow I use egg shells for its food. I save the egg shells and I put them in the blender and turn it into a powder and I sprikel it on my Tomatos and my other veggtables and it makes them grow big. Reason why is because eggs have calcoum and the plants like it. It works I recommend anyone to try it.
rinse the egg shells first since they're the part that carries salmonella (sp) but that's a good idea, plus fish that are too little to eat but big enough to keep make good fertilizer if you put them in the hole under your plants' root balls
I just got a Freshlife automatic sprouter. You can use it with or without power In less than a week you can have sprouts with up to 700 times the nutrients. And sprouting seeds keep for years. It seems like a great addition to my preparations. Radish, brocolli, mung, etc.
I think if you normally eat raw greens, you will start to crave them. Nature is the best supplier of vitamins. Not a bad idea to have some pills on hand, though.
Also, did you know you can get green vitamins from eating grass? All grass in eatable, just don't swollow. Chew all the green nutraunt out and spit out the fiber.
Excellent video. This year we are going to be trying some new ways to grow things as well ( used tires, raised beds, hydroponics). I am lucky enough to live in a good farming community so these kind of videos help. Thank you for sharing =]
Oh okay I understand your views on how to get complete nutrition during disaster now. I think you explained very well. I still think that growing high calorie/high carbohydrate vegetables such as potatoes are important during disaster too. And spinach like you said..the stuff has great nutritional value and can be harvested at any time
I did not know you could eat radish greens. When I picked my radish crops last spring i had to use gloves because the leaves were so prickly, I could not imagine sticking them in my mouth. Ouch !
there really isn't any nutritional value to eating canned fruit and veggies, check the labels. Leafy greens are the stuff, and easy to get them to sprout. And with a radical change in diet, forget the vitamin tablets. I haven't been involved in any testing where anything other than expensive urine was attained.
The tough part of being in Canada is the long, harsh winters. Although, many generations of First Nations people and others have survived all this time without any problems. I think its just we've all been suckling on the teet of capitalism ways too long & become consumers instead of survivors! Be well
green house is all i can think of. or plant stuff inside in winter and either use growlights if you have electricity or a generator in disaster situations... and if that wont work stock up on lots of mulit viatmins. one a day has most if not all the vitamins and minerals you need.
@overlordsshadow - You can purchase some very inexpensive grow lights from Canadian Tire for $10 each. "Ottlite Natural Light Supplement 20w Plant Bulb"
Bring the best natural lighting to your indoor plants, Provides the benefits of natural daylight without the damaging effects of heat, fits most standard incandescent lighting fixtures, Low heat, energy-efficient, Lasts up to 8, 000 hours. Most other lamps are $50+up each! Buy organic seeds & spread the times you plant seeds months apart.
Forget the rabbit food... spam, canned tuna, canned spinach, canned fruits, and multi-vitamin tablets should do the trick. ...and where I live, frozen food could stay frozen all winter without power... it's frozen pot pies for me. Nothing will grow here in the winter... no way. :)
I love a Spam Sandwich, my wife also hates it. she will just have to get over it... It is too much sodium to eat a whole can by yourself. A can like that should be used for a family of ten.
Also its best to eat good now, When the Dollar collapse (And it will soon) There will be no Bi-past surgry for your bad eating habits and gluttony now... Eat right and get fit now.
BTW, nice haircut Kevin...you're doing patio gardening but I have set up some 100 watt=26 watt incandescent bulb lights w/clamp reflectors & growing all kinds of veggies in my house right now..I have Jalapenos growing & fruiting right now & some various chilis, big cherry tomatoes, lettuces, coriander, parsley, chives, bell pepper plants, one eggplant, etc. doing well. I run them for 12 hrs at night coming from all directions to the plants.
Perhaps hydroponics would be a good solution for you. I have made really cheap hydroponics in the past. You can even get the grower lights cheap at Lowe's. Just make sure it has the light spectrum you need.
Make it portable incase you need to put it in natural light like near a window.
Apart from the fact that it looked like you ate that Ham cold, that actually didn't look half bad. I am storing Vitamins, canned veggies, and a lot of canned fruit. That won't provide as much nutrient material as fresh veggies and fruit would, but it will certainly be better than nothing.
For this turnips are my favorite, and kale is better than cabbage if you are eating it at "any stage of its development." And kale can still be tasty and nutritious after 3 years in some cases, as it perennializes easily. Also stinging nettles and chickweed are very nutritious and cold tolerant.
agree!! and I container garden as well :-) i also dehydrate fruits and vegetables and am making jerky as well can sustain on what I put up myself takes up less room than storing cans.
Good info to consider, it's always good to know survivalist gardening and nutrition. And I agree with blueghist about the wild edibles. Thanks for the video!
No it was Treet, basically the same thing, just a brand name like Spam..they are just canned/chopped ham pieces in gelatin. When I was a poor kid growing up we ate alot of that kinda stuff..sliced,breaded, & fried it tastes better. those little cans of potted meat like deviled ham & chicken, vienna sausages are a cheap source of protein easy to store. I personally dont like them but my dad ate that stuff on crackers..also canned fish, salmon, jack mackrel, sardines, etc. bon appetit' fellas, lol
great series 5/5

Atomic remains come down by rain and directly in your plants...
