The Russian Sputnik when into orbit in Oct 1957. The Free World did not admit that it was in orbit until Mar 1958. All reports said no such thing as a Russian is in orbit but you could hear the Sputnik on 44 and 22 Mhz every 90 minutes. (Miss-information until after the US put a very small payload in orbit.)
