I went to McKinley Elementary school until they tore it down to make room for the J,C, Lodge expressway. From there I went to Tilden elementary down on Brooklyn Ave. We used to go to the Greenwood theater on the weekends and watch cowboy movies. All that disapeard into the expressways.
I went to Hutchins Intermediate for a little while until my folks bought a house out around 7 Mile and Southfield.
I was a kid in Detroit during the 50's. There was crime then and the city had somewhat of a thuggish reputation, but for the most part people had jobs. The auto industry was thriving. They were selling every car they made and the middle class was buying houses as fast as they could build. Huge sectors of land were being subdivided and developed. The WW II veterans were making families and everybody was thinking positive.

I grew up there and witnessed the devastation of the 67 riots. I saw tanks and National Guard troops rolling down Livernois Ave. I heard gun shots of the snipers shooting at the firemen when they were trying to put out the fires, saw the destruction of my neighbor's business burned to the ground and how the insurance companies wouldnt pay for the damages because of the "riot clause" in their polices. I was a kid in the '70s and saw a lot of businesses closing, including Sears, which pulled all its stores out of Detroit proper by the time we moved in 1978. This has been happening for a very long time and is very sad to see.
Most US cities are in shambles, Detroit is only one, and yes the suburbs led to a flight of middle class from inner cities, that describes just about every US city with a few exceptions. Los Angeles is just as bad as Detroit, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, even San Francisco could be added to this list of decaying towns.Many of these other places are down and out or headed in that direction.

I cross my fingers for Detroit to open a new book. It reminds of the Ruhr-region here in Germany. The extraction of coal died away and so did the region - centered too much on coal. Today it has started recovering with new industries and services and is no longer one of the poor regions in Germany.

Since the economy has went down all of the seniors who should be retired have to go back to work, and are taking the jobs for people my age. It is not out of business. My Dad was a supervisor. When he found people sleeping on the job on mattresses they had hidden in the shop he would fire them, but the union would always get them their job back along with any pay they lost. You can't run a competitive business that way. Unions are too strong.

I have some ideas, and I meet more and more people all the time who are moving to Detroit with different plans and ideas to get it moving in a positive direction. There are investors putting money into improving downtown and midtown already, and multiple ministries working with young kids to break the cycle of parentless children who never get the guidance they need to make good decisions as adults. I watched as they built most of the houses around there and went to the first classes at Warren E Bow school on Pembroke the first year it opened.
Those were safe years.
I went past all the places I knew from those years and, well, it's just unbelievable what has happened there.
The car companies destroyed the econony and sent those who were teetering over the edge.

The decline of Detroit started little by little when the freeway system allowed the growth of the suburbs, then really gained steam after 1967-68. I was a kid in the '70s and saw a lot of businesses closing, including Sears, which pulled all its stores out of Detroit proper by the time we moved in 1978. This has been happening for a very long time and is very sad to see.

Most US cities are in shambles, Detroit is only one, and yes the suburbs led to a flight of middle class from inner cities, that describes just about every US city with a few exceptions. Los Angeles is just as bad as Detroit, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, even San Francisco could be added to this list of decaying towns.Many of these other places are down and out or headed in that direction.

It is the bad parts of the city that I think of automatically when I hear "Detroit", and I live across the ocean. My impressions are so bad of that city that I almost forget the nice parts. The city started declining in the late 1960's. It became overrrun with blacks and no longer a safe area to live.My aunt lived there and finally had to move in 1987. It wasn't safe for an elderly woman living alone. Her block was taken over and didn't get anything for her house

That's what happens when a city is built up around one type of industry. Detroit was built around the auto industry, with very little else. when the auto companies closed their factories the city had little else to fall back on. R.I.P. Detroit.

I have a great deal of confidence in our American spirit. It is compassionate and proud. We are doing what we have to and doing what we can. It is a growth. I am sure of this! It will take time.. Opportunity needs to be guided. It may be there and nobody knows it. It cannot just be a pin in the map or a listing in the directory. The do gooders must go out and tell the people. Not just sit and wait for them to come.

@LCF1952 There is really no where to work. I am 18 years old and I had been trying to find a job for years. Since the economy has went down all of the seniors who should be retired have to go back to work, and are taking the jobs for people my age. Im not making any excuses for the city but I can say there really isnt much of an opportunity for people in the city unless you take the path that I have chosen which is to get the hell out and go to school. BTW it's people not peaple! God bless

There IS NO WHERE to work? thats exactly what they're doing by leaving the city. not giving them money will make things worse because some people cant afford houses outside detroit, and no money for them will make the quality of their lives suck almost like a third world country (however many people love their country. Do not get me wrong. If I were born in a third world country I would have been much more social and in effect, still loved my Country, its where i was born.)

The Uions are destroying American businesses. Due to many laws that protect the worker, there is no need for Unions any more. Plus, union pay is way above adverage pay rate of a person with a college degree. That is why many manufactures out source to other countries as such workers in China are devoted, loyal, and commited to be productive unlike the union workers who could careless.

@echovector heeey... :( i'm socialist....and whenever socialist works the result is having the worlds best health care system or one of the best, along with some of the highest human development index. Health is just something i happen to prioritize over money. Whats the point with having money if you're too sick to enjoy it vs. Whats the point of enjoying life if you have no money to enjoy it. @echovector and by the way. GM just had a bad product. Lets all remember the ford pinto. They knew about it. But it would have costed more money for them to fix the problem. GM is very good at wasting money. I've seen reviews from workers on careerbliss . com GM only keep those around who say "yes" to everything rather than save the company money. Japan used Innovation. GM didn't.

WHEN GM (one of the few industries in Detroit at the time) REFUSED to change their business models to compete with that of the Japanese and German companies, they lost money, business FELL APART, and being one of the only supplier of jobs in the city, them going out of business was a monumental blow to their economy! @chairmanofrussia Did GM go out of business? When did that happen? I thought they just moved most of their operations out of the US to save money on labor. My parents both are retired from GM. It is not out of business. My Dad was a supervisor. When he found people sleeping on the job on mattresses they had hidden in the shop he would fire them, but the union would always get them their job back along with any pay they lost. You can't run a competitive business that way. Unions are too strong.

@JMCporsche I'm moving there next summer after college. I have some ideas, and I meet more and more people all the time who are moving to Detroit with different plans and ideas to get it moving in a positive direction. There are investors putting money into improving downtown and midtown already, and multiple ministries working with young kids to break the cycle of parentless children who never get the guidance they need to make good decisions as adults. I'll help all I can. God loves Detroit.
