I have the same problem with my neon 98 (Automatic), and test the alternator by removing the battery with the engine running and the engine will not turn off, so the alternator is working, but still the light on ... I need help ...
something I learned with my 98 neon after have the same problem,is I replaced alt, and battery at the same time but still had issues.Well after talking to a Chevy mechanic he said try to clean or replace the power supply wire to the the fuse block in engine bay on driver side.What a difference!
I had a bad batter give similar symptoms. The gauges and shit would die randomly and some times it wouldnt start xD. once I replaced the battery it was good. It was like 9 years old.
it wasnt the alternator.. same thing happened to me, i had a 15inch kicker l7 with a 2500watt boss amp in my neon and it was drawing to much current from my battery. so its probably something thats drawing alot of the batteries power.
is going to be ur alternator man i had that same problem if its on and it turns off by itself is going to be ur alternator man is not working promptly hope it helps you
check out this other youtube vid, i had the same prob. if your good with your hands(basic shit anyone with a car with work done to it should know) just do what this guy does on his vid. very common problem with neon gauges, check out (95-99 Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler Neon Instrument Cluster Repair)
@nbaker1229842005 yeah i had the same car i loved it but i would have to smack the top of the dash to get the gauges to work every once and a while till i got the wires fixed funny thing is my alternator wasnt a problem even with the mods till i put a kenwood sound system in it then i had to redo some shit
one thing many people overlook is when the battery indicator is on it simply means your alternator isnt running the correct voltage. you shouldve just taken a voltage meter and checked the voltage of the components(battery, alternator) while running at idle and when the cars off. you wouldve figured it out right away if the alternator wasnt powering the car(13 to 15volts while running).. i find it ironic you can turbocharge a car and yet you didnt know the issue here...
ya common problem with neons is the gage cluster solder points will crack which causes gauges to not work or go crazy. Both of my neons did it, the 95 SOHC and the 97 DOHC sport i have now both had the solder problem. its an easy fix.
yeah i had something similar happen and i got a new motherboard with the points re-soldered already. i put it in and no problems since and its been a few years.
This is a common problem with 1st gen neons. Try re-soldering the back of plugs on the motherboard of your gauge cluster. Or just change out your gauge cluster with a working one...

@ActiveWorldsLunitic
Did your grandma ever fix it?? or find out what was wrong with it?
RoseGirl2010 1 year ago
@RoseGirl2010 Nah, we only had it for a year or so, but apparently the alternator wasn't grounded right.

thats your altenator, its not charging or its not grounded, either way that would be your altenator or a sensor not able to crank your engine
