I think the expression is different. This is a homage ,perhaps before they played a wonderfull gifted technical role, but the conception artistry was the departed singer. The times are different, back then Britain was still a manufacturing country with poor wages conditions, but also craft. That is what was witnessed the craft of playing with a very important literary figure who didnt always no doubt have the best performances, its not a brittle thing music it changes.Im sure a lot more can be said.
Of course most of us miss Ian in this one but we must not forget that only these three guys can lay down that eary Joy Division vibe which other bands can only dream of. Great rendition nonetheless !
I've fucking had it with checking out vids of New Order performing Joy Division songs and finding this litany of comments bitching about how it's not the same without Ian and viciously slagging Barney off for singing in Ian's place. Of course it's not gonna be the fucking the same without fucking Ian, but New Order's performances of these classic tunes are to be savored. They're amazing and anyone that disagrees is a right shit-brained tosser that can blow it out sticks stuck up their arses!!!
three men on this stage helped write this song and singer/songwriter ian curtis bailed. the negative comments are awfully childlike , please take your little tantrums back to mummy, and stop polluting the internet.
@docfraktal Hmm let me see, Steve's drums, Barney's guitar, Hooky's bass, Ian's lyrics, I'd say that means 75% of it is New Order's and they have as much a right to play it as anyone. The band were Ian's best mates and I'm sure he'd have wanted them to play it instead of listening to some whining commenter underneath a youtube video. Besides, they didn't play this for 22 years after he died, is that deferential enough for you?
@docfraktal - There was a band called Joy Division. The singer killed himself. The rest of the band changed the name of their band to New Order and continued. They have every right to play this song. Why don't you see it as a tribute to Ian Curtis instead?
still ther are a few band members knowing him from the earlier days, they decided in earlier days to continue if anybody would leave the band(any reason)just would change the band name,
so why shouldn't they play a song of them.........
@docfraktal haha are you kidding me? NO are Joy Division minus Ian, if THEY don't have the right to cover one of their song i don't know the hell might have it...
of course its not the same without Ian, stupid comment....i still respect this though, would you rather not hear the original band play these tunes? i dont think so.....
@thelurker25 Ian Curtis didn't have the best voice in the world, not by a long shot, The guy you are talking about will not have a fraction of the impact Ian had and... still has on world music...
fucking great! sat here thinking about Ian on the 30th aniversary of his demise, and this just cheered me the fuck up.reminded me to grab life by the scruff, kick the shit out of it,and enjoy myself...
all of you guys are retarded. who cares? they have the rights to THEIR music, so guess what? they can play them if they want to. boo hoo. weep and moan. cry about it all day, but in the end they are their songs. ian was amazing, but life does go on, fellas.
I love this song and New Order had every right to play it, but Ian's and Bernard's singing styles are so radically different, it hurts. New Order's music isn't the cheeriest thing, but compared to Joy Division's it is. So hearing Barney go "Woo!" in the middle of the song almost kills the mood it sets. This is about a woman having a seizure and dying, and Barney goes "Woo!" Seriously? Rant over.
it's very simple people, check out the labels on the vinyl, every joy division song, words and music by joy division.. they all have equal rghts and can do what they want . i understand why for 2 decades they didn't do JD songs, t i'm glad they finaly did..ps. i'vee been a JD fanatic since i first saw them doing transmission and she's lost control back in 1979 on something else on the bbc.. it gave me goosebumps then and this version just did the same and surely, that is the ultimate test.
It's a tribute to John Peel you cunts! They wrote the fucking song, Ian only wrote the lyrics, so they can fucking play it all the times they want! Assholes!

Disagree, this is new order not joy divison, and the singer just doesnt fit jd songs. New order is too pop to play jd. but since it is a tribute to Peel i guess they should play Joy Division songs. And this just plain sucks to be honest
Are you a complete brick-head?!,what IS there to 'disagree' about?...Joy Division MINUS Ian Curtis IS New Order,New Order PLUS Ian Curtis IS Joy Division...Wrap your brains around it...LOL
Listen to me carefully! This is really not bad version from - let's say - instrumental side but Bernis vocal is sad surprise. You can't sing this song like that! It's sacrum! You can't make show with this song!
instrumentally it is excellent but from what i've notice from bernie's vocals on the joy division songs, he is trying to make them more upbeat and less depressing. unfortunately, it doesn't work on joy division songs.
shout "woo" out during the new order songs but the joy division ones need to stay gloomy and depressing. there's no point in making joy division songs sound like new order ones. both groups had different sounds

@morealternative it doesn't have to, it's a different band :) the problem is that some folks tend to compare everything they do with Joy Division. Take is as a Joy Division's cover, as in fact it really is, no matter if the musicians involved are the same ones.
I was brought up to this music, it's in my veins, it's not music, it's a way of thinking and a way of life and i'm proud to be like that inspite these ugly times!

Wow, this is great - they've really remembered how to be 3/4s of Joy Division. They'd lost that for years, so this is really something to behold. Sorry NO fans, but to me 3/4s of JD is worth a 1000 New Orders.
this song (and many other JD/NO songs) just absolutely kicks ass!!! these guys are just phenomenal -- and who the fuck cares if they are old now. bands these days are not as influential.
"bands these days are not as influential." That is a true lie. Look at bands like : The Horrors, Dandi Wind, O.Children, Neils Children, Hatcham Social. There is a new Wave coming up and i call it Post Garage. New Goth, New Rock...
You just have to read about them.. Because believe me.. When JD was playing in manchester .. people didnt think that they would be influential....
If we arn't allowed to play dead people's music, what would a lot of blues musicians do? And how about classical musicians? Ian is not sacred. Jimi Hendrix is not sacred. And I am about to do my own version of this song that will kick butt!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Why not.
Only, obviously, it sounds like shate !
Worse. Still : the song has a meaning and the man is giving us the auld awop babuloobop awom bam boom.
Now, I know that She's Lost C. is about an epileptic fit turning into an orgasmic act of liberation and I know that Pelvis Restless is the rocking & rolling icon of sex, but let's face it : is just shaking. And our good friend up here is just shaking too. Pointless.
Joy D. isn't sacred, anybody can do a cover. And fuck it up too : like here.
"Still, I agree, they shouldn't play joy Division songs."
Oh yeah, definitely. They shouldn't play ANY JD songs. I mean, they just wrote the music, and all those JD fans who weren't born yet should NEVER have the chance to see a JD song live by 3/4ths of the band.
firstly i find jd music uplifting and inspiring roger waters being about the only lyric and music composer still alive that really moves me secondly new order have split up unfortunetly lets pursuede them to reform and tour uk playing mainly jd songs they owe us we made them financially secure
those who say NO shouldn't play JD songs are simply stupid!from the first to the last note, these songs were written by these 3 guys.Without the atmosphere they created behind Curtis' lyrics, Ian's words couldn't have been so effective. Just imagine Curtis's singing with a music like Mariah Carey...
Excellent - so much energy. Dont know why people are saying they shouldnt do the songs they wrote.....it used to be painful in the 80's when people used to shout out 'do 'disorder' ...'...now they're doing them...hey it's their history....we're privileged that they play them...
This notion that Ian Curtis was the only member of JOY DIVISION makes me fucking laugh. First off I doubt that many of the posters here were even born when Unknown Pleasures was released. Second, there were OTHER members in Joy Division ! Yes Ian Curtis was an incredible lyricist / artist, but give it a fucking break already and stop worshiping the guy as a deity of post modernism. Bernard, Peter and Stephen were just as important to Joy Division's sound / aesthetic as Ian was.
I don't think that comparison fits. Curtis joined up with Hook and Summer which ended up becoming Joy Division. Cobain on the other hand for all intents and purposes, was Nirvana. It was his brainchild, he wrote nearly all the songs and music and was very dictatorial. Thus, I don't think the comparison fits.
New order is amazing playing Blue Monday but sounds like shit playing this music. Bad performance, no virtuosim and less than one tenth of the original music energy. Ian sang with his soul and body, it's not supposed to be played like pop song.
They could be 90, it doesn't matter. Artistic talent is not measured by numbers/age. By the way, Ian comitted suicide a long time ago, so please learn a little bit about what you're talking about.
i think you're taking this too seriously! bernard isnt ian, and he is also not a young energetic man! these are their songs too and they want to play them in memory of the past not to recreate it exactly! also, for the record, im a musician and a fan of both bands so fuck ye!!
Agreed. There's an interesting movie about these bands' stories: 24 hour party people. They show how She's lost control was recorded, really cool. Thanks for you reply! Joy division 4ever!
Argh! I take back my comment. I was looking at Hooky play that bass... Man, it sure must be fucking great to get back to his roots with that song. FUCK!
Well unfortunately Ian checked out early, so it's only natural that the remaining members of Joy Division perform the songs. Barney and Hookey always fought, they'll kiss and make up though, once Hookey realizes what a prat he's being
These old f***ers still have it in them. Great performance. I have to disagree with some people here. If anyone has the right to play these songs it's these guys. Does anyone remember the Nine Inch Nails or the Moby version of JD now? Nope. But this song makes you feel like you're back in 1980.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think the greatest respect they could have paid Ian Curtis is to have got in a singer whose balls have dropped or not play it at all. Sumner sings like a girl. Those songs were written by Ian and produced by Martin Hannett solely for Ian's voice.
Ian wrote the lyrics, but surely a song is more than just a poem eh? Not only have I read the book, but I've read multiple books and have seen Control. I think I have my fair share of Joy Division information thank you very much and I've come to the conclusion that Ian Curtis was not god.
I'm so pissed at Hooky! he wants to leave his legendary band for sum piss-weak DJ project, Freebass! Not only that, he says he'll sue the rest of new order if they continue without him!
I don't mind if they play the old songs, as long as they play it like this and ease off on the synthsizer electronica crap. Guitars, bass, drums. THAT'S ALL YOU NEED!
That's not to say I'm a complete fanatic about it. I just think that, like many other British bands of the time, New Order overdid the synths around 1984.
That's about the time I lost interest in most British bands.
Mientras esté Hooky no hay problema

Barny and Hooky wrote the music and Ian put his poems/lyrics over the music.
How can they cover a song that they wrote themselves?
Fair enough the original song is miles better with Ian' vocals but nothing should stop these guys playing their own songs...

Wow, is that actually Bernard singing?

this song (and many other JD/NO songs) just absolutely kicks ass!!! these guys are just phenomenal -- and who the fuck cares if they are old now. bands these days are not as influential.
poweredbys4 3 years ago

BobCronley 3 years ago
These songs are alive and should be performed both as a tribute to Ian and because they are living vital art.

I mean, they just wrote the music, and all those JD fans who weren't born yet should NEVER have the chance to see a JD song live by 3/4ths of the band.
leeraconteur 3 years ago 5
firstly i find jd music uplifting and inspiring roger waters being about the only lyric and music composer still alive that really moves me secondly new order have split up unfortunetly lets pursuede them to reform and tour uk playing mainly jd songs they owe us we made them financially secure
robert99brown 3 years ago
I hate the attitude that musicians owe us anything. They are the ones with the talent. If we want good music, we owe them.

Why can't New order play Joy division songs?Curtis wrote the lyrics. The guys wrote the music and martin hannet gave the band their bleak song.

those who say NO shouldn't play JD songs are simply stupid!from the first to the last note, these songs were written by these 3 guys.Without the atmosphere they created behind Curtis' lyrics, Ian's words couldn't have been so effective. Just imagine Curtis's singing with a music like Mariah Carey...
treborn12 3 years ago 5
Excellent - so much energy. Dont know why people are saying they shouldnt do the songs they wrote.....it used to be painful in the 80's when people used to shout out 'do 'disorder' ...'...now they're doing them...hey it's their history....we're privileged that they play them...
germcorp 3 years ago 5
I think it is more like "do the songs that Ian Curtis wrote".

He only wrote the lyrics. They are playing their own music.

Don't get why they 'shouldn't' play JD songs. Those guys wrote those songs. It's like Paul McCartney playing Beatles songs.

why shouldnt they play joy division songs, if it werent for these 3 there would be no joy divsion, and ian curtis would just be the average bloke.
class tribute (Y)

Not quite. He would have probably been a famous poet. Obviously you don't know much about Joy Division and the history.
jaidemm 3 years ago
This notion that Ian Curtis was the only member of JOY DIVISION makes me fucking laugh. First off I doubt that many of the posters here were even born when Unknown Pleasures was released. Second, there were OTHER members in Joy Division ! Yes Ian Curtis was an incredible lyricist / artist, but give it a fucking break already and stop worshiping the guy as a deity of post modernism. Bernard, Peter and Stephen were just as important to Joy Division's sound / aesthetic as Ian was.
selfdestruct999 4 years ago 3
true dat, it's almost like kurt cobain wasn't the only member of nirvana.
RasputinaMan 4 years ago
I don't think that comparison fits. Curtis joined up with Hook and Summer which ended up becoming Joy Division. Cobain on the other hand for all intents and purposes, was Nirvana. It was his brainchild, he wrote nearly all the songs and music and was very dictatorial. Thus, I don't think the comparison fits.

New order is amazing playing Blue Monday but sounds like shit playing this music. Bad performance, no virtuosim and less than one tenth of the original music energy. Ian sang with his soul and body, it's not supposed to be played like pop song.
etfs1977 4 years ago
they're 40-chill the fuck out!
parkranger86 4 years ago
They could be 90, it doesn't matter. Artistic talent is not measured by numbers/age. By the way, Ian comitted suicide a long time ago, so please learn a little bit about what you're talking about.
etfs1977 4 years ago
i think you're taking this too seriously! bernard isnt ian, and he is also not a young energetic man! these are their songs too and they want to play them in memory of the past not to recreate it exactly! also, for the record, im a musician and a fan of both bands so fuck ye!!

Agreed. There's an interesting movie about these bands' stories: 24 hour party people. They show how She's lost control was recorded, really cool. Thanks for you reply! Joy division 4ever!
etfs1977 4 years ago
Argh! I take back my comment. I was looking at Hooky play that bass... Man, it sure must be fucking great to get back to his roots with that song. FUCK!

jonaandersson 4 years ago
Well unfortunately Ian checked out early, so it's only natural that the remaining members of Joy Division perform the songs. Barney and Hookey always fought, they'll kiss and make up though, once Hookey realizes what a prat he's being
watersfan 4 years ago
These old f***ers still have it in them. Great performance. I have to disagree with some people here. If anyone has the right to play these songs it's these guys. Does anyone remember the Nine Inch Nails or the Moby version of JD now? Nope. But this song makes you feel like you're back in 1980.

I think the greatest respect they could have paid Ian Curtis is to have got in a singer whose balls have dropped or not play it at all. Sumner sings like a girl. Those songs were written by Ian and produced by Martin Hannett solely for Ian's voice.
natty2359 4 years ago
Might I remind you that the music for those "Ian Curtis" songs were written by Sumner, Hook and Morris.

ian wrote the songs
read the book, watch control
warsawlad 4 years ago
Ian wrote the lyrics, but surely a song is more than just a poem eh? Not only have I read the book, but I've read multiple books and have seen Control. I think I have my fair share of Joy Division information thank you very much and I've come to the conclusion that Ian Curtis was not god.

The greatest respect they could have paid to Ian Curtis would be to have left the songs alone in the context they were written and performed.
I never thought I would see the day when Sumner would be bigger than Hooky!

I don't mind if they play the old songs, as long as they play it like this and ease off on the synthsizer electronica crap. Guitars, bass, drums. THAT'S ALL YOU NEED!
archer1949 4 years ago
That's not to say I'm a complete fanatic about it. I just think that, like many other British bands of the time, New Order overdid the synths around 1984.
That's about the time I lost interest in most British bands.
