  • Why do such videos still have dislike button?

  • can this be dlned on windows?!?!

  • @xIIFusiioNzXx

No, because Windows sucks so hard that it would just freeze. If you don't believe me, check the internet, there are enough projects that do about the same thing for Windows, and none of them works well.

  • check out my Linux channel people! nothing but Linux and Opensource Goodness! :)

  • That operating system is Slax. I have a copy.

    Good OS!

  • you where watching labyrinth.

  • linux no es como el vista esta hecho para que funcione con la mayoria de computadoras.xD

  • ese es Linux esta muy bueno pero no ocupa muchos recursos por todos esos efectos de las ventanas como el vista??

  • whats the name of this video reproductor???!!!

    minute 2:00

  • very nice os,big up 2 the developer teams in the whole world. i never touch a linux machine, iam a mac user . what about with viruses? or apps like adobe CS3 ?

  • There's very little viruses that Linux machines can get, I think it's just around 200 viruses compared to Windows's millions.

No Adobe Applications are compatible with Linux(Yet) =-] If you haven't ever tried Linux you should at least try a live CD :-)

Linux is definitely the future-- I myself am using the Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex operating system.

  • yay! 4 linux. I like linux mint!

  • what are youi talking about you can use adobe flash and shockwave with linux

  • Just the Adobe Flash is compatible, none of the applications like Adobe Suite are compatible

  • @LordSmight I think this has less to do with Linux's layout and more to do with Linux's diversity. Between Gentoo, Debian, Red Hat/Fedora, Arch, Slackware, Suse, etc. its harder to write a really destructive virus that affects most distributions.

If I were to write a virus for Linux (I dont know why I would want to), I would write it for Ubuntu, since it's got a very large, cult-ish following.

  • @LordSmight I'm not making fun of Ubuntu or it's users, btw. I'm just acknowledging that it appears to be an extremely popular distro (maybe the most popular right now).

  • @EverythingZen14 According to distrowatch us Ubuntu "cultists" are currently the most popular/used Linux distribution. It would indeed be the best to write a virus for. But if I'm not mistaken someone could write a virus to affect the Linux kernel which is a same part of all Linux distributions, although it may vary with different kernel versions, and modifications?

  • @LordSmight Yes, you could write a kernel virus. However, the number of people who know much about kernels is relatively small. Most people would have to put a lot of effort into writing a kernel virus. Additionally, as you pointed out, different distros like to customize their kernel, to a degree. Factor in, also, that some virtual machines plant their own kernel modules for guest additions features. Also, not all distros ship with the kernel source or development tools.

  • @LordSmight It doesnt surprise me that Ubuntu is the undisputed winner of most popular distro. I like the distro, as it has excellent driver support, an intuitive GUI, the initial installation has all the programs necessary for the average user, has probably the largest package repository out there, and the development community is very supportive.

  • @LordSmight I almost forgot, unlike Mandriva, Ubuntu is also still very easy to customize. For some reason, I found Mandriva One difficult to customize in some respects.

I should point out that, by the very nature of what Ubuntu tries to accomplish, it is a little bloated. Excellent for getting started, but I'm migrating now from Ubuntu to lighter distros, now that I'm more comfortable with Linux. I'm eyeing Gentoo, Arch Linux, and Slackware.

  • Audio driver broken?? lolllll

  • Nice windows background! lollll

  • Please elaborate...

  • LOL, Linux can mimic what an OS X desktop looks like you fuckin Noob. Even better, it doesn't freeze up, unlike your Mac with the spinning time icon. With Linux, I can hack your system, violate the virginity of your personal information, shoot a nasty Trojan load up your hard drive and replace important drivers as I tear out of your system's ass to the point where you will curl up in a fetal position and swear to god that you were born a bitch.

BEND OVER AND PICK UP THAT BAR OF SOAP, NOOB.

  • lol, pretty harsh but still, linux can do pretty much do anything graphically wise os x can do and more. plus no spinning beachball or any of the dumb shit os x does. i should no i triple boot all 3 lol. its an ubuntu, xp pro, mac os x hybrid. not slow at all i might add.

  • @DMalenfant1 People like you are the reason, people like me invented the term

    "psycho-geek-no-lifer-crack-pot "

You are NOTHING and the fact that you even took time in posting a comment and bragging what you CAN do (which you cant) proves me right.

BEND OVER AND PICK UP YOUR MASTURBATED CONDOMS AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR NOSE !

  • @KING20007009 "You are NOTHING" you are one to talk lol. The fact that you felt the need to say that shows you feel like I am a something, because I never brought it up.

"people like me invented the term "psycho-geek-no-lifer-crack-pot "" and your inventions don't catch on huh? To tell you the truth, the label you just gave to me is a whole lot better than the hard to pronounce medical terms that you have been diagnosed with.

If I want any shit out of you, I will scrape it off your bf's dick.

  • @DMalenfant1 I know I know... i get it.. so you are a gay a mentally challenged sick SOB gay !! the fact that YOU ARE NOTHING and have NOTHING to do and a BIG NO LIFER is proved as you made and probably will make another useless comment !

& I do not get infected by diseases that you carry and YOU think spreads through INTERNET !! and if I could then I'd delete the gene pool you come from !

GO HOME KEYBOARD WARRIOR otherwise THERE WONT BE ANY NUTS HANGING FROM YOUR BODY TO SCRAPE OFF FROM !!

  • @KING20007009 "you are a gay a mentally challenged sick SOB gay" you used gay twice which shows you are mentally challenged.

"YOU ARE NOTHING and have NOTHING to do and a BIG NO LIFER" your grammar sucks, you should only use and once. Oh if that was true then why reply to me in the first place?

You are calling me the "KEYBOARD WARRIOR" but yet you are the one telling me in the same sentence "THERE WONT BE ANY NUTS HANGING FROM YOUR BODY".

You have a logic disorder and what you type proves it.

  • @DMalenfant1 Ohh so now you think you are a psychologist ?? upgrading from a 'HACKER' to a 'PSYCHE' hehehe, cant make your self perfect so you'd rather find salvation in proving others are worser than you ?? Listen mate MY grammar maybe wrong and I may try to amuse myself by replying to a NO LIFER SOB GAY - GAY ! but you keep proving that how much of a slithering spineless crawler you are who slithered out from a hole into this world , who has no need for existence and who SHOULDN'T be here !!

  • @KING20007009 "think you are a psychologist ?? upgrading from a 'HACKER' to a 'PSYCHE' " I never said I was a psyche nor did I ever say I was a hacker. Pointing out facts does not make one a psyche or a hacker, it just means they have knowledge in it, just like me pointing out how much you suck at grammar does not make me an English scholar neither. I feel really sorry for you now, you look really desperate in your replies, therefore you are lame and boring. You may have the last word, bye.

  • errr PC=good Mac=Ok

Linux=great things in it with this

  • Dude. Labyrinth. That movie rocks. You suck.

  • your father is playing in it!

  • linux is free =D

  • Which is why I always laugh at those people, who look for Linux torrents. xD

  • lol i know i cant believe how many ppl ask me where to get linux...

so i just burn them an iso of ubuntu and tell them to stfu.

  • Well, I download Ubuntu via torrent due to speed and availability :P

  • The Ubunutu LiveCD is 700 MB - and the most effective way to download something that large is by Torrent.

  • lots of distros are offered as torrent downloads. BitTorrent != illegal_shit.

  • BitTorrent is not illegal its what you choose to download that is. (games and other software stuff that cost money / copyrighted stuff) but Linux is under the "GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE" which means "the freedom to share the software with your friends and neighbors, and"

  • haha yeah i know that. "!=" means not equal to in lots of languages. I was replying to someones comment where they were worrying about bittorrent being illegal or something, apparently it attached to the wrong thing.

  • hello gimp :)

  • sorry but... these effecs are 100% useless...

  • The cube is very useful, after getting used to it you can't live without it. Transparent windows, how is that not useful? Quick overview of windows and desktops... likewise useless? I fail to see the point of your argument.

  • well.. yes, the cube is useful, but all the other cosmetic effect (jelly windows, water, fire, ecc...) are 100% useless...

  • Well, I would argue that these serve a purpose; if decorative elements are completely expendable in your eyes, then I would instead recommend BeOS, which is one of the ugliest OS's on the planet. It's a cross between a 70's colour sheet and Windows 95 but it is brutally stable and none surpass it when it comes to media. Vista's aero makes it a pleasant to work with, so does XGL Beryl in Linux. Granted, wobbly windows may not be revolutionary but they add to the experience IMO. Your call. :D

  • sick, so nice, WANT 1

  • holy... this motherfucker eats vista and osx leopard alive!

  • your guys talk very easy about switching, believe me, I am trying to switch, but I just can used to it, it seems. My like to play some games in a while, and well.. linux is not really the place to be, I also bought a DX10, and that will become useless. I run xp, but vista runned fine ( 30-day trial was over ). I dont know where the hate for vista come from, but I dont have any :). However, I want to install linux on a old pc (pentium one) but without CD-player in it, its not a great succes. :D

  • Mac OSX is the father of all... this.

I'm sorry folks, but you should check Leopard to see where all these came from....

  • This has been out since before 10.5 was even announced.

So you should check to check where Leopard got all it.

Think Before you post a comment next time.

  • rolled.

  • Well, the toolbar came from apple but everything else is origial to ubuntu/xgl. however, there are programs for windows that give it some of these features, like WindowFX by Stardock. but all in all, linux runs the smoothest even on lower end systems.

  • Even the floating toolbar panel existed in Unix CDE more than 10 yrs ago.

  • how to install softwarer

  • Why won't anyone make a theme like this for Vista? i wouldn't mind replacing aero

  • Because Vista Sucks. Microsoft are so greedy they don't let anyone edit the firmware. Linux on the other hand is free and now (via wine) can run a lot of windows apps. You can get loads of free apps and firmware mods like this. In short, get linux, give up on vista :)

  • Umm, so you're saying get Linux and use Wine so that I can run Windows applications? Naa, sticking with Vista sounds a lot easier to me...

  • easier? with all the viruses/incompatibilty/memory usage. I was with vista but i switched and i've never regretted it!

  • How can you have less incompatibility issues with Linux when the majority of applications are designed for Windows, and in order to run a Windows program on Linux, you have to use a third-party application?

  • you could argue that but the driver compatibility issues with vista are because most apps are xp based.

  • I agree, I gave Vista a chance knowing how much of a ram slut it is, only thing I will give it is the window frames are nice and i like the load time curser, but other than that, it is millenium all over again. Damn OS crashes, have to dig deeper to find things, has way too much crap running in the background, I am now going Linux.

  • agreed. vista is just worse and slower than windows XP, but it has good graphics, which make it more slower. vista sucks hard, microsoft is DOWN.

  • what program did you use to record the screencast?

  • find in softonic, or some web pag like that.

  • tnx

  • True is that XGL doesn't work on ATI Radeon Cards! Only on nVidia. :)

  • I got it working fine on my ATI card. Even though my M200 Radeon is supposed to only support it in 2D I get full effects. The drivers are better for nVidia at the moment though.

  • I cant get it 2 work on my ATI Graphics card i have the 1600se does anyone know how i could get the effects. My pc freezes wen i try...

  • @ SniperkingCK9999

Have you tried the FGLRX drivers? No ATI driver is perfect and you will probably get v-sync issues but it will give 3D acceleration.

Let me know if you still can't get it to work.

  • XGL and Beryl take very little RAM, people make to big a deal about RAM and linux.

  • can pandas flying?

  • do you have to have a good video card to do this?

  • I've got Geforce 4 MX (old card, I buy it 6 years ago) and I were using beryl on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn

  • Umm not really, as long as your graphics are not on board or generic, it should work.

  • is XGL the same thing as Beryl?

  • yes almost, i used xgl on suse, it has less some property than beryl. i.e, if you transport a window, its opacity doesn't change, or while you switch the desktops, behind site is black. in this video, it is same color (or wallpaper) as desktop's.

  • XGL is NOT Beryl....

XGL is a fork of the XServer that makes Beryl run. Beryl is a Composite Manager, a window manager that uses effects in the windows

  • PAPA

  • KDE looks very nice. I been using GNOME and Ubuntu.

  • How Movie are??????

  • be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be Linux my friend :P

  • What is that ObjetDock-like toolbar you have running on bottom of your screen? I'd like to know!!

    Thanks!

  • omg i love that matrix thingy

  • a.q süper bşiymiş linüxx

  • Where do you get this version of Linux?

  • Go Go Lunix :-p

  • dosen't lunix use old version crap stuff like aim 1.1

  • no it uses what ever the user decides to use

  • In a word "No" - You could not be more wrong. In fact Open Source software then to be very advance compared to the stuff you pay for in most cases.

  • that's because os x is based on *nix

  • it has nothing to do with that. you can claim that gnome resembles mac and kde resembles windows, but that isnt a winnable argument. linux's gui is X (xorg, x. org, x11). mac using a different windowing system. because they are both based on unix, doent mean anything. if you are going to post comments, at least know what you are talking about drenny

  • we were arguing?

  • linux looks like a ripoff of both osx and windows

  • "linux" doesn't look like anything. Linux is just the kernel. It's the inner organs, not the skin, not the face. This is KDE, GNOME, xfce, enlightenment, xvwm, blackbox, ion, evilwm, etc.

Linux has many faces and a lot of them don't look like anything other at all (not only look, also handling/concept wise). And some do look like something other (e.g. windows) by default, but can be configured to your special needs to such an extent, that you won't recognise the similarity any more.

  • Windows/OS X are a rip-off from Xerox PARC.

  • what dock is that? kooldock?? how is it with Gnome?

  • looking at "movies" ....on linux is greatt b/c the way linux handles graphic app is awesome!!! i also hook it up to 37'' Tosh LCD, works flawlessly

  • gfx designers of linux need to team up with mac programers and make an awsome fuckin pc. witha right click ffs

  • Linux?

  • so mac is the first to have the fancy effects so what?Linux is good because it's highly customizable, okay?Anyway,we don't care about which one is better because we are one big *NIX family. Now let us all bash Micro$oft!

  • Yea it looks cool , but how good is it when your looken at XXX? thats what i wanna know =p

  • Hej! napisy do tego film sa po polsku!!! ehehehehe :D

  • مذهل

    amazing

    المظفر :)

  • Nothing new here, absolutely nothing. All of the effects shown are RIPPED OFF OF OSX. The cube effect, over done, by the way; the zooming Dock and Apple's Expose are total rip offs. Hope no one is dumb enough to believe these are Linux's innovations. It is nothing more than a reaction to OSX as is Vista. Just wait until Oct when Leopard blows everything away, including the current OSX Tiger release!

  • The difference is one is free, whereas the other requires a substantial cost commitment. Vive le Linux!

  • godelfia, remember, if your not a Linux geek you will need lots of support. Red Hat charges around $179 per-year! Mac OSX is $129 for a full-install; 90-day support or 3-years for a few extra bucks. Also, OSX has a huge library of free and commercial software. And if that's not enough, you can run any type of Linux distro (for Free, as you say) plus Vista, XP, etc. I'm runing Ubuntu, XP Home and Win Pro 2000 with NO problems!! Try that on your, not-so-free, Linux box.

  • Enough with the OS wars already. Every OS has its advantage/disadvantage, it would be nice if one had it all, but thats just not the case. BTW, there is plenty of Linux support on the web without paying anyone, probably the best for community support. For something thats free, Linux is very innovative, stable, increasingly compatible, and at the forefront of development. So in the end, who cares as long as technology and ideas advance on the whole.

  • I'm not a mac afficionado; can you help me install OSX on my Dell notebook? k thanks!

  • Sure: If your willing to install it illegally and you want to visit me here in southern Germany, no problem! Other than that, your best bet is to buy a Mac and then you can IT ALL, Any SOFTWARE: Window's, Linux and, of course, OSX!

Remember, over half of all new Macs sold are to Window switchers; that woud be, by the way, around 9,000 Window switchers per-day, and growing!

  • mactube: what people fail to realise is that almost every feature in MacOS is a ripoff of KDE, Enlightment etc etc

  • You ansered the wron Quest gustaafb! The question is the annimation effects such as the Cube, nothing more. Apple invented them and others reacted to them. What they are built on or managed by is not the question. Like the shape of a house, what kind of bricks are used isn't important, its the shape of the house that we are talking about, or, in this case, were talking animation effects. Stick to the question please!

  • So when, and how did they invent the `cube` virtual desktop effect? OSX wont have an implemented virtual desktop feature until 10.5 in fall 07, so explain yourself a little before ranting on about how they invented it.

  • jo3ym, Apple created the Cube Effect 3.5 years ago; it was part of Panther's FAST-USER-SWITCHING! Most of the effects shown in Beryl, XGL has been in OSX since 2001! Come on, your suddenly going to prove that Beryl and XGL had them before that, hah, now you explain that! OSX won't have a virtual desktop before this fall, boy, what have you been smoking? I have OSX from Cheetah to Tiger and Apple had these, in the lab, years before 2001. Obviously, you've never used OSX!

  • Okay, I never mentioned fast user switching or said I was out to prove anything, or battle you on the subject. Apples stuff is really good hardware and software, but its no reason to knock xgl stuff which is also good. Yes I use OSX but am not a "osx geek" as you would call advanced linux users, and there isn't a virtual desktop implemented, yet, right?

  • jo3ym, I agree. My whole point is that there are lots of people in here saying how great Beryl and XGL are, and I simply wanted to point out that it was Apple that started the whole ball rolling. Give credit were credit is due, I say. I like and use Windows and Linux, but OSX is were the real innovation starts. I think you are confusing virtual desktops with 3D desktop, which OSX, Vista, Beryl and XGL are. Virtual desktops is another thing. :)

  • Thanks but im not confused. Its not necessary to try and be condescending, you obviously cant discuss without using vulgarity. Aside, beryls cube effect, is exactly an extension of gnomes VDesktop feature, plus a lot more window management effects that beats win, and osx. Yeah apple is innovative, who said they weren't? I didn't. But they cant beat beryl and its features currently. Hopefully they will catch up soon because it would be good for all.

  • jo3ym, sorry, but I didn't mean to sound condescending. Been out hunting all morning (for Bear) and I'm really too tired to be posting anything. Sorry. (VDesktop feature I never heard of, but will check it out later.)

  • jo3ym I have been doing research and true, Vdesktop goes back some time, but Gnome added the 3D Cube effect to the VDesktop long after Apple introduced it almost three years ago. Sadly, I can't display it here, but a quick search on Wikipedia, etc. proves my point. Frankly, its not that big of a deal!

  • Didn't really see anything that proves your point, if its so, they made a mistake by never implementing it for use in the OS. Beryl is full of features beside the cube, its highly customizable, and interactive. More so than anything else I've used. I'm curious to see what apple rolls out, I'll be happy if its half as good as beryl.

  • jo3ym. Virtual desktops can use 3D effects, but basically a Virtural desktop is software that expands your desktop into two or more screens; its like having two screens, etc. XGL uses the 3D effect, but it is not necessary to have fancy effects. Yes, OSX can handle virtual desktops with software that will be built into Leopard, the next OSX. My original point was the origin of the fancey 3D effects, nothing more. Thanks for responding. :o)

  • mactube, a virtual desktop is not like having two screens. Its like having two desktops. Beryl and XGL CAN use the 3D effects, such as 3D cube, but they dont have to to run the virtual desktops. You don't NEED the 3D effects to run anything, but they are a great aid to running virtual desktops. Viva la LINUX!

  • Thanks for pointing that out liberatetheking; I knew that; not sure what I was thinking at them time. Still, XGL, Beryl, etc. which all came out in 2006 are inspired by OSX which goes back to 1999 and 2006.

  • ok lol, i was just clearing some things up here haha

  • OSX came first out in March 2001, I don't really think that you can include server OS's (wich make out in 1999). You are (kinda) still in the Unix family, stfu og bash MS! :3

  • linux. the best operating system in the world? yes!

  • Only if compatibility wasn't an issue :-P

  • With this, or without this, Linux will make the Huge impact it has always done. WOW wavy windows, what's the business case for that??

  • Most of you guys amaze me with your ignorance. Everyone one of these guys copied their root tech from Xerox. Apple got the window overlapping to work thanks to Bill Atkinson and we got the Mac. Windows from MS followed. They borrow tech from one another.

  • I'm so sick of this perpetual bickering about who thought of what first and who ripped off who afterwards--the discussion is way too old to be interesting anymore. Couldn't we all just agree that this is how you conduct development? I mean jeez, you can't think of everything yourself. People share ideas with other people whether they like it or not if they produce something in a large scale.

  • Please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please hurry and finish XGL for release so i can dump MS forever! :D

Man, once this is released, MS is in for a world of hurt. Hopefully it should start to get big companies writing proper gfx drivers for linux. The rest will then follow. :D

  • Dude...XGL is already out - it's been out for a while O_o

  • The background image is "new bliss" from the XP Royale theme.

  • does anyone know what kind of video card this is running on?

  • That looks awesome. I can't wait till the final release.

  • Is there anybody who knows how to create the application bar present in the video? the bar which looks like the Mac OS X's one... it's really nice!

    who can help me??

  • Does anyone know what program could have been used to record this movie ? I see something running called "X video capture" but can't find anything on it. I need something like Fraps under linux, any help appreciated!

  • Massive rip-off of Vista AND OS X. Brilliant.

  • Been around looonnnnngggg before Vista. OS X is linux (Free BSD anyway) based. So the "rip-off" is the other way around.

  • I am talking about the interface conventions of XGL, which are recent developments.

  • You could say a rip off of OS X, most definitely not of Vista. Sorry, but that's the truth.

  • Does anyone know the name of the movie playing? I haven't seen it in many years and can't remember the name.

  • Labyrinth

    best movie ever

  • Thanks so much!

  • Linux is Top one yoo

  • can some tell me how to connect my BELKIN wireless connection with Linux or does BELKIN not work with Linux ubuntu???? COULD SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE thanks :D

  • Try Freespire.

  • whats the minimun for my PC to work fine?

  • Looks good

  • I wonder how this would work on two monitors

  • not much at all comming from an apple users point of view, i do like how the windows are transparent when you move them

  • And still i think the look is kinda ugly... its just everything is cubic.

  • This is all just stealing from OSX. XGL has stolen the features of both tiger and new leopard.

    This is not groundbreaking!

  • the xgl project predates os x

  • Project looking glass from Sun microsystems started back in the summer of 2004.

  • funny, people still compare linux and windows. it's the same as if you compare cars and bikes ... every os has it's own operating range, so use the os that works for your needs - be it windows, be it a linux-distribution

    amazing demo tho!

  • Question ¿in wich hardware is running Xgl in this video?

Please respond. If you can tell us please: processor, ram, video card.

  • I am running Suse SLED10 and have installed XGL (the above effects). I am a Noob to Linux and have managed it.

Give it a go, it's all free. I am not going to bash Microsoft but I have had a lot of fun playing with SLED10. More than I had with Vista.

  • what distro is this?

  • Też mam beryl'a i z KDE wygląda to lepiej :P

  • All I can see is some fancy 3D stuff, what I can't see is an operating system that's all round 'user-friendly' and I certainly don't see anything that can challenge Microsoft.

At least Windows does what it's told and runs all of my programs properly. Well, I'm running XP and I've never had any problems with it whatsoever. Vista still looks like the best OS out at the moment.... excluding the ever beautiful Workbench Amiga OS and XP!

  • That "fancy 3D stuff" goes a lot further than what can be seen in this demo & a lot further than anything you'll see on Vista. The distribution in this demo uses the KDE desktop; I use it on my desktop & I can assure you it is user friendly. My desktop "does what its told" and runs all my programs wonderfully, with greater integration and lower system requirements than either XP or Vista. If youre really that in love with Vista, may I suggest you get out more...

  • why don't you ask google to run xp or vista on their servers?

  • Awesome Demo!!! And so many movies and resources running at the same time w/o any lag whatsoever! Makes Vista look like a slug or turtle dotling along!

  • This looks fucking amazing!

  • Question what is that video player that he is using?

  • I have the same question, that video player is just about ideal, not bulky and wasteful like realplayer/wmp or even quicktime.

  • yes pretty much everything in linux is that way, its one of the many reasons i love linux

  • I'm a real n00b to Linux (used Windows (now running Vista)). Anyways can anyone tell me what programs/os I need. I understand I need linux. I want to get as close as possible to the version/os that is on the video. Can you just point me in the right direction?

  • There is not one way Vista even beats what you can do with the current OS X. It sucks in comparison.
