@BettorOffSingle You're right....by 1985 corporate America couldn't afford to ignore Hip-Hop because they realized they could use it to sell a product...hence the beginning of the end...
the first time i heard this was summer 1986 sitting on my stoop in Bed Stuy listening to red alert's rap attack. when this nigga said "thought i was doughnut, you tried to glaze me" i knew, at that very moment, that Hip Hop was something different. no longer a fad, no candy rap bubblegum bullshit. this shit was serious and here to stay! this is was a game changer right here.
i was wondering, in the album version of "eric b is president" why'd they cut out the line "i must have got you too hot and burnt of your wings" line and replace it with a "make em clap to this" sample? i always thought it seemed strange.
@gropegrape they sampled Fonda Rae "over like a fat rat". The story goes that eric b. showed the song to rakim & rakim spit his beer all over the wall thinking it was the funniest shit he'd heard. Eric b. then goes " just like you laughing now, you gonna be laughing all the way to the bank & be a millionaire one day because of this record"- the rest is history.
Still got versions of this on a '12 inch. Folks started playing this back in '86 and was like who the hell is this. They came in kicking the door down. Rakim, one of the baddest lyricists.
But it's biting me, fighting me, inviting me to rhyme, I can't hold it back, I'm looking for the line, Taking off my coat, clearing my throat, My rhyme will be kicking it until I hit my last note. CLASSIC RAKIM :)

The song that let the world know that Rap had grown up and established itself as a genre independent of all other forms of music.
Perhaps the most important rap song ever in that regard. Definitely one of the best, if not the best, ever.
