I have always loved this song and have been searching for a good vocal jazz arrangement of it. This is unbelievably good. Where can I buy the music for my vocal ensemble?
Pitch correction or not.. these people are making me love jazz! I'm so a fan of Afro-Blue!! If I went to Howard.. I might have wanted to be in that ensemble.. yes!
I laugh when I see comments like that (referring to autotune and such)....if you haven't seen them in person (which I have) then you couldn't possibly know that they truly sound like a CD every time they perform....
@onebadgs400 the affirmative action mandate was lifted, so they no longer had to have a white girl in the choir and she was dropped. j/k, she graduated in '10
@onebadgs400 uhhh....they attend a school..damn, isn't the point of school commencement? Perhaps the white girl graduated...she did look smart, afterall (lol)
there is pitch correction on this track. Anybody with any studio experience can hear that.
And as for the "I've heard them live and it sounds like this" comments, no it doesn't. They sing AMAZINGLY in tune, but not like this. Listen to how laser precise the pitch is. That isn't what human voices sound like unaltered.
Just listen to the related videos to see what I'm talking about.
@amcsdmi On the one hand, jazz chords are so intricate that the dissonance in them can sound almost digital. On the other hand, they probably did use some effects on this piece. However, there's a difference between using vocal correction to even sound decent like most pop stars do today, and doing so as a part of putting out a polished piece of work. I'm sure we all agree they sound better live than most folks could ever hope to in a studio,
@musicteachjw: Thanks so much for that explanation, I was really curious about that. As for me, I would LOVE the opportunity to buy their music in more than 2 or 3 minutes clips. They are a true talent and I'm so happy that this University group of getting nationwide exposure. I love jazz and I love their ability to add jazz to contemporary music. Beautiful sounds those voices!
These folks are scary good! I wonder, does the dynamic, meaning members, change as they graduate? So that a fresh group of Afro Blue move in as other move out? I didn't recognize some members as being on The Sign Off. At any rate, I would buy their music in a flash.
@tammilbs This is a student group. Some of the ones on sing off may have graduated or may be seniors. So it's refreshed every year. It will be interesting to see what Howard U does with the name if this group from Sing off are signed as a group. Afro Blue is a mainstay in D.C. performing all the city to government to the Smithsonian on the Mall. They've won many Jazz awards over the years.
@rmessier2 This is not auto tuned! You may have just never heard a group able to sing this tight. Look up Take 6, The Real Group, The King's Singers, Voces 8, The Swingle Singers, etc. It is possible, and I think they are too good for auto tune. Just look at the performances live on the Sing Off, and you'll know that if they were given multiple takes, they could do this easily without autotune.
We all know this group is talented, so it doesn't really matter if they used autotune or not for this recorded version... it's perfectly acceptable to make very minor fixes with autotune (It's only a problem if a singer can't sing so they fake it with autotune. That's not the case with this group).
Moving on to a more important factor: What's with the bad green screen and solar flares? 3:30 - 3:50 That's the real crime here-not if they used autotune or not. =P
I am so proud of my fellow Howardites. All natural and beautiful. Afro-style.
I wish you all great success! What a treat for me to be introduced to you during Homecoming 2011, ony a week after the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Dedication Ceremony and March on Washington for Jobs!

Sorry to burst bubbles, but this track is absolutely drowning in autotune (more specifically melodyne). Doesn't mean they're not amazing live! But this track is definitely pitched.
Who was the idiot that said they used AUTO-TUNE, obviously you need to have your ears checked. I can tell when AUTO-TUNE is being used, this group cares more for the natural sound of their voices too much to use that crap. IF they get it wrong, the wold more than likely keep singing it until they get it RIGHT. Please no more comments about AUTO-TUNE for this talented bunch. Oh and by the way if you want to hear more great harmony that some may mistake for AUTO-TUNE, listen to some TAKE 6.
@rmessier2 There was no autotune used here. I've heard them live. They really sound like this. Its a combination of the kinds of jazz chords they're singing and the vocal mastery with which they sing them.
Where were you when this nation started turnin to crappy music??? Im at my schools cafeteria and i feel like jumpin all around it! you guys are not just Dope! you THE dope............. Woah!!!! I just ran outta words!
Great, Great, Fantastic job every time I hear it! For nonbelievers, listen to Afro-Blue perform on any other number of videos available on YouTube (and with much less nice video equipment). This group just happens to be that perfect storm of voices which genuinely compliment one another. In the meantime, let the music wash over you.
@rmessier2 some individuals are still capable of making music like this without abusing auto tune...these just happen to be some of those individuals.
@rmessier2 no auto tune here, just smooth crisp sound. Comes from training your vocals to perfection. I think you just aren't used to hearing their authentic sound.
Quite simply UPLIFTING which is the true meaning of music!!...sharing a message of inner peace straight from the heart and soul!!...can't get enough!!...beeing a bass singer myself, I get a big "low" kick out of the bass performance!!...puts me in a trance!!...keep on!!...(sorry, I was in one of my friends account when I made the first comment..hi!hi!!) but hey, here it is again!!...Richard

There is definitely no auto-tune. This group does this live, and could do it without the microphones too. These students are THAT good. They work hard to do this.
@rmessier2 and the 26 musically challenged who thumbed it up... AUTO TUNE? REALLY? You clearly have no musical background audio engineering or ear training bro. Check their performances on ABC Sing Off and then let's feel super salty that their vocals are indeed pitch perfect.
that's what's wrong with this country - people like @rmessier2 - can't even hear what real music sounds like - if they used any pitch correctors - they sure hid it pretty dang well!
This is a classically trained group not.... Rihanna! Each of them went to college (HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHU) and majored in VOICE! They have the ability to mimic instruments and deliver perfectly clear voices by virtue of natural skill, hard work, and education. Do not disrespect them with your limited experience. Please and thanks.
@rmessier2 hey bro i honestly don't think they're using it as much as you think they are. they are using it in certain parts for effect i think. and the bassist i really don't think used it on his voice at all. he is really just that nasty. lol
Dear Rmessier2...there is no auto Tune in this song...what you heard was someone's really singing that part...if you haven't noticed...they have enough voices to cover all of the different core parts to imitate any synthetic sound needed for the song. I agree they are great and i feel as though they should perform this on the SingOff..it would win the show..and gain all of the support they need if they do.
Even though the cast we saw on tv isn't this group .. this was just beautiful.. WoW!. two thumbs up.
