During their too-short recording career (1976-1979), seminal British punkers X-Ray Spex put out only a handful of singles (literally -- there were but five) and released only one full-length album. How, then, can a record label be justified in releasing a 52-song anthology for a band whose total output barely warrants its own divider in a record shop bin? Two words -- Poly Styrene.
Ooh! I like that! Funny how the original 'punk' bands didn't all sound alike. I have no interest is in what is or is not punk, but as a set of rules, punk is boring. This song doesn't sound like it is trying to fit a cookie-cutter aesthetic. It is fun and sounds good.
Years ago some academics were asked to gove their opinions on the Spice Girls on Radio, possibly the Today programme, finally this woman says, "always preferred X Ray Spex myself", they all agreed, stating "oh bondage, up yours" was their personal favourite.
@tebb1t : LOL I hear what you are saying but nothing can ever make me nostalgic for the Spice girls. They were the beginning of the end, in my opinion. Give me some X-Ray spex, The Slits, Siouxsie Sioux any day.
@nuwavegurl Great post - Siouxsie is the best - could listen to her over & over, especially from the PUNK ERA - like Poly is - authentic - followed in Patti Smith's steps - very nostalgic!!!!!!!!!!
if you mean punk in the 70s was about cookie cutter aesthetics you couldn't be more wrong. everything was all mixed up together.

@zimmyfromhibbing
There's no justification, it's all about making money.

At least some people had taste !
But music has become even worse since then that I'm almost becoming nostalgic for the Spice Girls. I never thought I'd here myself say that !
