In my opinion the female looks submisive and the male appears to be rejecting her, possibly because she's showing sings of pop-eye therefore indicating an underlying condition which the male may of picked up on?
Great territorial display by the male - most likely he can see himself in the reflection of the camera lens. i video a lot of bettas and they do this too.
He is not attacking the female - if you watch carefully she also does a bit of a territorial show near the end too.
You can elicit a similar response by placing a mirror against the glass.
My apisto c. is very aggressive against the females too. Maybe you should get one more female, so that they can "share" his agressivity. Or else it can be too much for this one female. I've talked to people through forums, and they say it's he's just trying to impress her with his aggressitive behavior.
this is a really weird behavior... Personally I think that you were annoying him with a mirror... If you were not he wouldn't be so aggressive toward something outside the tank..
uh the female looks like she has pop eye i have never seen an apisto with eyes like that and the male would never be that defensive against anything unless he was in too small of a tank or has bad water quality / hungry / has a parasite
he needs at least 3 girlfriends you know... and she's sick.. look at her eyes, my girl died because of it..

His anger doesn't seem focused on the female. I think he's reacting to the camera.

Perfect song for the video! Very interesting behavior. I especially loved how he opened his mouth so wide.
Did you ever figure out the reason for his behavior?
