yo creo que toda las danzas orientales tienen un concepto y por tanto shakira sabe lo que hace, si mi colega MARIAMIRA dice que se ve tensa, no es así. Shakira está concentrada en la danza del shamadam, ya que no se le puede apagar ni una sola vela, es una de las danzas mas complicadas y bellas.
this is actually a pretty good choreography, the music is hot. she looks a little better here, but yes you can still see that she's isn't a real belly dancer, at the begining of the performance she looks scared, and her arms are sloppy, but still we should give her credit for making belly dance so popular.
The dvd you can see the full concert on is called "Shakira Live and Off The Record". I'd love to post more up but I think this is enough of a tempter.
The whole concert is spectacular and is the best concert footage of Shakira available.
Now I like this a lot more than the stuff she does in her music videos. I just think traditional belly dancing is so much more beautiful than cabaret or the sexual kind of stuff I've seen in her videos.
i saw this concert 1st row in vienna, and i must say i was blown a way by her shamadan piece. it was the best i ve seen, most of the criticism is due to her not being full Arab in my opinion (and her bein too sexy for many in most other vids). sooo many professional bellydancers really cant dance, watch lebanese and turkish tv, or here on youtube! shes WAAAY better. i missed out on her last tour - not good??? bye bye!
No most of her criticism is not due to her being only part Lebanese, it is because she is simply not a good belly dancer, here she makes a better attempt, but still she is no belly dancer, she does hers more for show and the public eye. She is very beautiful, and a great singer and performer though. there many nationalities of dancers that are really good, I agree on the turkish and lebanese, I am an original Egyptian fan myself, there are a few turkish not like Didem. (she is not good)
I agree she is not the greatest bellydancer - but it s visible she is not a *trained* bellydancer, but self taught!! and that being I think she s a great great mover. the moves she does (always the same) she executes with amazing snakiness and fluidity. Did she train her skills, I m sure she could be amazing.
well, Suheir Zaki was not trained either, she taught herself while listening to the radio, s and I am not mistaken Fifi Abdou, is self taught as well. Even if she did not train, if she focused more on the actual dance and stop making it an "appealing" or "sexy look" then she would be better, "nothing wrong with being sexy, but it is not for everything
but for sure soheir focused on becoming a *dancer*, and a bellydancer, with all her efforts. shakira is a singer and composer after all! so i doubt she invests this much into teaching herself to dance.. but i dont agree with that oversexy focus either.
Well I may be wrong, but when I saw the tortura video, with oil all over her and her breasts, and doing chest drops, that is when I thought that, like I said, there is nothing wrong with being sexy, but it is already a problem with uneducated people saying that oriental/raqs sharqi/belly dance being simply a sexy thing already.
the sad thing is - I do like her dancing on la Tortura, actually, after the first shock ;) - that what she s doing in most of her dancin is mostly Afro Caribbean, some Latin, and only SOME raks sharki. ESPECIALLY tortura is mostly afro - the uneducated on oriental dance wont believe that, i ve tried to explain SOOO many times :))
True, now besides the whole outlook on the chest drop thing, she did great, my uncle said she should have won at the awards for that one. LOL. Now the even harder part is to try to explain the fine line between Afro dancing and raks sharki, especially during the drum solo, where they do the hair swings now tell me that is not done and still done in actual african dancing.

No most of her criticism is not due to her being only part Lebanese, it is because she is simply not a good belly dancer, here she makes a better attempt, but still she is no belly dancer, she does hers more for show and the public eye.
