  • Great song!. Bass line is fantastic!

  • wow what a tuuuuuuuuuuune cant repeat this its to good never b forgotten!

  • Comment removed

  • this funk soul is the business it delivers so much gusto and its a classy number it cant b beat its a goliath tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuune this band were real entertaining foxy

  • Just a dead giveaway....like this tune

  • Smoking ruins your ability to sing. Doesn't that lead singer know that?

  • Is this funk...or pop...or rock...or popfunkrock? One of my favorite tunes of all time. If this doesn't get you heart beating...you must be dead!

  • @freakdaddydog

More like new wave funk, that was pretty popular in the early 80's.

  • pure funktastic a stroll in the sun easy tiger!

  • Can't stop jamming to this song....

  • It seems to me not obvious that they did shot this video in London (cause it IS London...right ??), when they were an American group... but I think that the reason is that they were a group most sought after in the U.K., especially after the success of the 1982 album...Is it...?? It even seems to me that they were "bigger" in the U.K. than in the U.S. ...I know they made some apparences in U.S. TV shows like "AB1", but seldom on "Soul Train" ...It's like they were massively "exported" to the U.K

  • @VintageSoundsNumber1

Yeah, I was station in England several years ago, I notice they played a lot of Shalamar classic hit songs from the late 70's & early 80's on the local stations. On top of that, they had local UK groups covering some of their old songs, so the group has been a big influence over there to my surprise.

  • Did Eddie Van Halen play the solo in this one, too??? LOL

Arguably THE best dance tune from the 1980s hands down!! :D

  • @TiramisuHappy well, it definitely wasn't Jeffrey Daniel, that's for sho!

  • I have no words to describe how much I looove this song!!

  • Amazing to learn all the behind-the-scenes stuff on this video. Ms. Watley is just so amazing, smooth and striking...hard to imagine the producers could be so short sided in the way they treated her. She WAS Shalamar to me. I could never take my eyes off her. She is beyond cool in this video.

  • Ahhhhhhh...the memories...

  • Great song! very rarely heard these days!!! Dancing in the sheets and Second time around are great Shalamar songs too!!!

  • god i mis the music of the 80's

  • just awesome song still hot today!

  • they broke over stupid shit...

  • @zavienlove .. yep she sure did swing that dress.lol

  • @zavienlove Nope... they broke up over Howard's BULLSHIT, so to say in laymen terms!

  • I always thought this tune should have charted higher and sold alot more than it did. I was a kid when it was released, I think I was about 9 years old and I remember hearing it as well as "dancing in the sheets" all the time on the radio. Fast forward to the 90`s and every saturday I listened to the "retro radio" which was a show of many hours playing nothing but 80`s tunes and I never heard any Shalamar until I started calling in and requesting it.

  • love ,it love it! This song bass is so hot!

  • did leon work with five star?

  • @carl22069 .....wow...really??? i have to disagree with that! LOL

  • I LOOOOOOVE THIS SONG!!!! One of the greatest of the 80's!:-)

  • The music is as good as it ever was. This video, I could do without!

  • Shalamar hit #22 in Billboard, 9-24-83. I wonder if Howard Hewett smokes in real life. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • great video especially for the times and of course gotta lov jody and jeffrey aint he her baby daddy

  • @kennyfame Honey evrybody from Crenshaw and Soul Train days in LA know Jeffrey played for the other team that' s why his azz was a woman beater he hates 'fish holding his breath while swingin from both trees as Wendy Williams say "How you doin'? He ain't hardly nobodies baby nothin', Shalamar was donzo after this could see the shade all through it lol Howies Skywalker jacket wtf, Jody on point givin attitude like 'over this sh** and Jeffrey fake and DL as usual smdh

  • @plussizedgoddess interesting funny thing is I've never heard that Jeffrey was. Not surprising though I raise my eyebrow @ any male dancer; especially from back in the day. Thanx for the tea :)

  • @kennyfame

That's Andrew Somone (former Prince bass player), I think him and Jody have a daughter, who's probably 30 years old now.

  • @MrJuly1990ish No you talking about the second child. I know Andre Symone is the father of that one. It's actually a son; he looks like Andre. Im referring to the one that she was pregnant with in this video. Back in the early 80's. Long before Andre came on the scene in the late 80's.

  • Howard hewett is just 2 sexy on this vid! ;)

  • class.

  • This song should have gotten higher than #22 on the US charts. This song had Top 10 written all over it.

  • @retroforever YOU ARE SO RIGHT!! This song so deserved to be in top 10!

  • @retroforever damned right!

  • @retroforever If people weren't deaf…

  • @retroforever this was the first "official" video in the American Bandstand Video Showcase from the 1983-84 season premiere

  • Joey Gallo was the guitar player on this record. Peaked at #22 Pop and #10 R&B in the UK it peaked at #8. Good chord changes, Shalamar was a bomb group. Jody Watley was (is) always on point.

  • Jody Watley was born in Chicago, IL.

  • Best song by Shalamar

  • Favorite Shalamar song.

  • My music professor wrote this song.

  • i do too~~~!!!!ymca village people~~~!!

  • i do too~~~!!!!

  • Love the 80s!!!!!!

  • Their best ever song and one of the best from the 80s x

  • LOVE this song!!

  • Dude, they still rock! Serious child of the 80's here!

  • ok, anyone else think Phil Collins Dont Lose My Number has a VERY similiar beat, sound and drum style???

  • Haha the dude is playing air guitar. None of the notes he is pretend strumming are even timed with the sing. Hahahha

  • @sharkaranyang Well, it's hard to mime to a non-existent instrumental part. Jeffrey's playing a bass guitar, but that's a synthesizer bass you're hearing on the song. There were a lot of videos like that, usually you'd have a drummer, bassist, and sometimes other musicians miming parts that are obviously not being played by humans on the track (or in the case of the bass, it's a synth bass on the track instead of bass guitar)

  • What is Jody doing with that keyboard? She sure isn't playing it.

  • @spewey111 I guess she's f**king it.

  • @ugalawdog98 Just lke Daniels foh

  • @spewey111 And from my eyes loks like Jefrrey Daniels aint playing that guitar either with no chord smdh

  • My fav sooong from Shalamar!!

  • This is arguably the finest R&B song, an video from 1983, the groove is so infectious, an funky, with those trademark Shalamar vocals. We used to jam our asses off at the rink when the DJ played this one, Jody Watley was so damn fine back in the day, a beautiful woman, an a classic 80's R&B dance record, an video...

  • this is what really got me into Shalamar was the musical evolution into a Nu Wave r&b act, the fat they could semalessly play dance, soul and rock was great for a vocal group. It's ashamed just when they were about to take over the music world they broke up but we have the music to remeber what could have been.

  • @67camaro truer words have never been said, Great album, great tune, great group..

  • Love this song...Jody Watley Rocks in this video!!!

  • Why is Erica Badu looking like Jody Watley?

  • This is a band and or act that evolved with their times. Something you saw happening with Michael Jackson and Prince. That ability to become part of a current music scene and trend and yet still retain your musicality and originality.

  • @wendileona Well said!!

  • This song always put me in a good mood.

  • I'm afraid I don't understand the video to this, or the video to "Dancing in the sheets." Could someone please explain?

  • LOVE JODY WATLEY

  • One of my all time favorite videos. I loved the way it was put together. Much better than so many at that time. One of my first big crushes was on Howard! I wanted to have the style of Jody. I remember on "Night Tracks" the advertisement of the dead giveaway something or other. We all wanted Jeffery's shoes!

  • I see wear Willow Smith got her hair-do from. The guy on the left with the guitar. LOL.

  • The group had absolutely arrived . This was the classic line-up . I see three individual superstars creating one of the most powerful groups of their time . The attitude just made it more attractive . Sassyier . I was so very proud to have been a part of the begginning . Just like everyone else . I'd hoped . They'd work out the problems . With Jeffrey's dance and Howard's singing ; Jody was the perfect combination of both .

  • Love this track. Proud to say that my dad and his friends produced it and I'm glad everyone else likes it too.

  • Jody is a godess, but in this video, she looks like she is on ice....

  • @HawaiianRedsFan she might look cold as ice because this video was filmed the day the she quit this group watch her unfiltered series i think it's part 4 or 5 Ms Jody was OVER IT and it shows but flawless nevertheless

  • @stilettogroove She did the video because Dick Griffey threatned to sue her for breach of contract so she said she would but she didn't wanna be in any scenes with Howard so they got stand in. She pulled it off lovely though like a professional

  • @HawaiianRedsFan She was pissed at Howard Hewitt...LOL!

  • I remember when Jody and Jeffery where Soul-Train dancers before becoming part of Shalamar..!!!!!!!

  • Jody Watley had so much style and flare. She was the anchor of Shalamar. Great group!

  • @DrSooner1 - she did have style. Her movements were fluid as well. She was swingin' that dress like that before Anita baker thought about it...LOL.

  • real nice piece reminds me when i listen to the song many times on the radio in honolulu. many thx.

  • Great song. Brings back memories when I use to hit the clubs in NYC as a college student. Thanks!!!

  • remember this video on TBS Night Tracks

  • @pegasusbsb27 I agree. Madonna, Michael, Prince all had great albums. But I would put this song up against anyone of their singles. Love that Hall and Oats groove as well, but I would include Doves Cry on that list also.

  • I love it when she disappears in the telephone box !

  • i dont know but i think this was the worst shalamar song. a departure from what made them special and it the song indicated the death of the group. loved the styling in the video though

  • lovely

  • I remember I was in college when this track was released and I absolutely loved it !!! The video sealed the deal for me as well !!! I couldn't wait to get this LP and I still have it to this day !!! By far the best Shalamar LP they put out as a group !!! As one of the previous posters said.. it's been damn near 30 years and this track still turns it out !!!

  • Thanks for posting this!!! I'm posting this on my Facebook page Spin That 45!! LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • I had this on 45. good times!

  • Absolutely the best!

  • Went to #22 on the Hot 100 in September 1983.

  • This is one song that should have went to #1 on the chart but instead it stalled at #22 in September of 83.....I cant imagine anybody NOT liking this song.....DAMN!! ....LOVE THIS SONG....its a classic!!!!!!

  • @chrisporter61 You are so right. Of course how well a song does depends on what else is on the chart @ the time. I don't recall what was on the charts when this song struck but there must have been good material out there.

  • If you watch Jody, even in the video there is low emotion in her performance. Like she was saying to herself let's get this over with! I hated when Shalamar broke up, they were truly my favorite group of them all!

  • @chessminimalist if you watch la watley's unfiltered on youtube at jwatley1 part 5 i think , she talks about the this very day and what ocurred. it was over way before this video

the song is growing on me

  • This song was hot, but many of us Shalamar fans knew, it was a wrap for the group as we knew it.

  • Jesus this track is so f&^king good!

  • The song is hot but the video was pretty much garbage. I would have liked to have seen some choreography.

  • In America, this song was always followed by a high-energied instrumental on radio play. Does anyone remember the name of that instrumental?

  • funk/new wave sound great track

  • you can tell Jody is bored to tears.......this was when they were going through band shit.

  • this looks like it was filmed at Steve Styrange's The palace (the performance) and I think Jody is wearing Worlds End.

  • @JeuneFilleaCarnival it is worlds end...

  • @kingsley84 isnt that what I said?? whats your point

  • I think this is a great video. I love the symbolism: Jeffery Daniel in the shadows and Jody destroying the mask at the end; a definite sign that this would be the LAST video that all three would do together. Great song, too! One of their best. Thanks for posting this groove!

  • Funky New Wave of 1983! the year I graduated high skool! the good ole days! I was soo New Romantic it wasnt even funny!

  • This was one of my favorite Shalamar songs! The vocals and music was on point!

  • After watching Unsung, it definitely shows that Jody was already gone in her mind. She wasn't even trying to pretend she knew how to play that keyboard. And what coked-out director had her and Jeffrey playing instruments with no connections? SMH.

  • @maximerlin It's a music video, it's not supposed to look like someone is playing an instrument. There's many videos with a band "playing" without being connected to anything. Check out a Duran Duran video, a Robert Palmer girl band video, or Sade's "Hang On To Your Love" with the cardboard cutout instruments. Wires and amps would look distracting.

  • @Musicvegan58 I respect your opinion, but I was only speaking of THIS video. The scene looked disjointed and unnatural. Plus Jody played no instrument at the time so, it made no sense to put her on keyboards. I love the group, but Jody stated that Howard's ego was out of control, and the tension was evident throughout. Bottom line: The song is a classic the video is wack. Just my opinion....

  • They were both so sexy...

    Amazing old school song.

  • Loved this group - and this song especially. Thought Howard was so sexy with that hairy chest and attitude!! (LOL). I saw Jody W on a promotion with Smokey Robinson on an infomercial for "The Best of Soul Train" (on which she was a regular dancer at one time)... This song still sounds great!

  • I want to drill my one pecker into Jody!

    She's better looking than Sade.

  • love this song

  • Shades of the billie jean video

  • Man I remember this was such a stand-out, classy, hip, even the synths were so refined compared to alot of other tunes in that era. Nice!:)

  • back in the 80s Funk as it later turned into the catastrophe of hip hop was so cool. You had Shalamar, Ready For The World,The Time, Dazz band and who can forget Prince.

  • Miss Jody...bad as shit!!=) The last video...of the [semi]original cast

  • LOVED Jody's dance movements (3:12) and outfit in this video. One of my favorite songs by Shalamar.

  • Comment removed

  • Man! Jody is so beautiful, and Jeffery got me in trouble with my mom for cutting my hair like his.

  • 0:42 to set it off.

  • My absolute favorite Shalamar song! The new wave/rock elements on this track & others from the 1983 LP "The Look" were a fresh and exciting direction for this group. Sadly,Jody & Jeffrey left shortly after this was released. This track still kills nearly 30 years later!

  • @poetgrande08 I couldn't agree more. I still love this song! Glad to see it (hear it) after all these years! I have to go buy from iTunes or Amazon immediately! This was there best song in my opinion!

  • Comment removed

  • @poetgrande08 Actually, Jody and Jeffrey left Shalamar as soon as this video was done shooting. in fact, things were so tense when they arrived in London, it almost didn't get made at all.

  • @WayneInSF

Actually, Jeffrey already left Shalamar, but since he was still under the contract with Shalamar, it was'nt official until late in 1983 (in Unsung, he was obligated to still tour and do the music video or else he would get sued). Jeffrey's only involvement with The Look lp was on "Dead Giveaway," but Jody Watley sat out on two songs (one of them was "You Can Count On Me" - Jody refused to sing on it because the song was given to Howard to sing at the last minute instead of Jody)

  • @WayneInSF Jody reveals she couldn't do the scenes with Howard and had either a stand in wearing a mask! She speaks about it in Unfiltered >>

Interesting, it worked though, added an interesting element to the video, the masked lady.

  • Love Jody Watley !!!!!!

  • @67camaroforever.....YES!!! she was HOT!!!

  • Memories of Music Video 60 (a local video show I loved when I was 13)!

  • @70s80s I feel the same way about Howard Hewett!! (LOL). Wasn't Jody Watley on Soul Train (as a dancer) before Shalamar? She reminds me a bit of Sade...

  • @70s80s Me too. I was sad when Jody and Jeffrey left, but after watching Unsung and Unfilted I can see why.

  • cant keep my eyes off the sexy and talented Jody Watley !!!

  • Solar/Elektra Records (C) 1983
