Also don't forget that diesels tend to have 1 gear more than petrols, which throws the possibilty of going trough a torque (or horsepower)-peak one more time than petrols. Surely, they need to shift once more ... Take in mind, the "wider rev band" is a smokescreen, you cannot use it for going fast. Going fast = shifting at the correct time, not staying in one gear to show off how wide your rev. band is. The width does not really matter, neither does the amount of revs. HP and torque available.
Well, in fact, comparable diesel engines with LESS horsepower do take on petrols (with MORE horsepower), because of their much higher amounts of torque. You have to see what you compare, a 4-cyl. 2liter versus a V8 is not what you should do. Turbo lag ? Of course, but it is not mandatory to use the revs which cause turbo lag, you should look for usuable revs. Ironically, that is more a problem with petrol cars : wider rev bands, cause more difficulties choosing gears.
The high torque figures for diesels is a smoke screen (a dirty diesel one). When you factor in the turbo lag and the tiny weeny power band (because of the low revving), in the end it is much slower than the equivalent petrol. And at the end of the day, if you race a diesel on a track against the equivalent petrol, the petrol will outhandle the diesel because of the heavy lump the diesel has in the front and the infelexibility of using power through corners without gear changes. ;)
these aren't racing cars, just cars for daily use. If I could I would have bought a M3 and take my bike to go to work everyday :-) I get your point but this vid is just to show that you're easily able to get some better performance from the pre-facelift 118d.
@infernogialloblu UR clearly wrong, why do alot of touring cars, SEAT's etc have turbo diesels then? if they are inferior to the equivilent petrol....
Just drive a 120d or 320d and after that talk about it. I can tell that you didn`t.
The power band is WIDER in turbo than in an aspirated and it`s not afected by the low rev, quite the contrary: high reving cars have narrow band power.
I want to know who that brave chap is at the start who stands inbetween the two cars holding a camera. Kudos to him for not shitting his pants. And since when have people started racing diesels? How pathetic is that??
what's so pathetic about racing diesels? BMW makes one of the best diesels in the world, just look into 335d (probably quicker in real life than 335i). Or what about all that LeMans winning Audi diesel cars? You are living in 1990s it seems and your idea of diesel must be a noisy clickityclack Mercedes W123 taxi car or Ford Transit minivan. the torque you get from diesel is hard to match. Only sound is lacking.
I suppose BMW diesel cars are ok...but you still can't beat petrol for performance. Supercars are nearly always petrol and diesels are fine for endurance races like Le Mans...but not "real" racing. You do realise diesel engines cannot be made with light alloys/metals liek aluminiun etc? They must be made of heavy, strong metals...so HEAVY engines. You do also realise that diesels don't rev very highly..6,000 RPM is a LOT for a diesel.
ive had both 118d and a 318 i and i prefer 118d for motorway driving but on the streets the petrol wins hands down lol although the diesel is quicker

btw, een heel pak van de garantie van bmw vervalt nadat je je auto gechipt hebt.

@qwerty123456789jhdtg 6th gear is usually just a cruising gear, the 335d would prob do 140mph+ in 5th.

The 2007 320d has 163HP, not 177!
lmerfu 3 years ago
nope, really is 177hp.
you can also buy a 163hp version here in Belgium, which is cheaper in taxes...
this car however has 177hp. check the technical specs.
Fokko83 3 years ago
The 177HP is the 2008+ version of the 320D. 163HP is the previous model.
liveobsession 3 years ago
BMW started selling the E92 320d with 177hp in march 2007 here Belgium. at the time this video was shot, both cars were brand new.
so seriously, everyone, the 320d in this vid has 177hp, not 163.

Wel leuk om te weten dat je een 118d kan chippen tot een vlotte auto. Want 122pk is wel schaamteloos weinig voor zo een sportief bakje
