That is utterly ridiculous, the colonies won their independance when Britain surrendered (not gave)the land. The fact that thousands upon thousands of lives were taken on both sides proves that it was not "given".

Washington was a superior officer to all the British including Cornwallis, UK refuses to accept the defeat apparently. Use of the word surrendered. No formal declaration of surrender was ever signed or spoken of. This is just typical. In the same way as the insurgents in Iraq will claim a victory and that USA/Britain carried out a withdrawal, and therefore surrendered!
