Mike Tyson was also down for more than 10 seconds when Douglas KO'd him. The ref also gave Mike a sloooo count , so what the hell are people moaning about ?. By the time keepers clock Tyson was down longer than 10 seconds. Watch the fight n see for yourself. But at least Buster got up Just in time. Tyson got up but was clearly out on his feet.
@BruceinFalkirk These Tyson lovers ALWAYS make excuses for him whether in boxing or his personal life. They say it's never his fault and it's always someone else's or something else's fault. I have nothing against Mike Tyson. I'm not gonna bullshit anything either though.
Douglas got up,Tyson didnt.Tyson would have six ko losses but the one dq speaks more about what kind of figther he was,he never beat a another great fighter who was in his prime, his fights with Botha,Norris and Savarese should have ended in dq,how do you defend this guy? There are so many great fighters who didnt go to prison for rape or try to break an opponents arm or continue to beat a downed opponent, and try to retort without slurs or profanity,or about trying to eat my children
@Sydbar8 Co-signed. I'm surprised the usual Tyson slurpers like fadethetrade aren't here to debase facts. Tyson was entertaining and a bruising puncher. No doubt. And he dominated a weak heavyweight division in the mid to late 80s. But he is not a a top 5 heavyweight
When i watched this fight live I was so caught up in the Tyson mystique that I couldn't see what was really happening in the fight..that being the terrible beating that Mike was taking..I just kept thinkikng that Mike is gonna land that hail mary shot at any moment and put Bustars lights out.He nearly did in the 8th rd but Buster got up and put it to Mike like we'd never seen before.
Buster was a wasted talent ,but he's earnt his place in boxing history with this win.
When that fight took place (I was there) the ref gave Buster like 13 seconds. (it's slowed down in this video)
He only gave Tyson like 9 seconds. Plus, Tyson was looking for his mouth piece. he could've gotten up earlier had he not done that. Also... as soon as he got up, the ref put his arms around him (as if to protect him) and stopped the fight.
Can't believe people are disputing the count. If you time the moment (by seconds) when both hit the canvas and both got up, it's exactly the same. What's different is Douglas was taking a breather before getting up. Tyson was completely in a daze by the time he stood up and could no longer continue. If Tyson did continue, he'd be knocked down again from the first punch. Or maybe even by wind. It was over!
I don't think that was like Rocky. I mean Douglas was winning the fight up to that point. It wasn't like Douglas was getting crushed for 10 rounds and then pulled out a win.
Um, this was not a inspiration. The fight was fixed and Tyson was in on it. A bet was made against Tyson and millions were made. That is real life. This is not real life. Rocky was more real than this fixed match.
Physically, Douglas could have been the greatest ever. The one time he didn't quit after getting nailed was the one night Tyson wasn't prepared mentally or physically. If he'd fought that way prior to his fight with Tyson, he'd have been 34-0 coming into, and Tyson might have been prepared for him...I can't say how the outcome would have been though.
@ManlnCognito...Do me a favor...Go and wipe my cum off of your mom's cancer-ridden tits. Mike Tyson was caught up with money and bitches when he fought that worthless piece of shit Buster Douglass. Hollywood needs to make a movie of this fight and the stories of the two fighters leading up to this bout. "This makes cinderella look like a sad story"
When Buster went down in the Tyson fight, people say "He was down for 13 seconds!!" Come on.... He wasn't knocked out. Not even CLOSE. He propped himself up on his elbow, and was listening to the count. He was coherent, without a doubt. He waited until the refs count was almost up, then got up. He took as much time as he could. Whether the ref counted slow or not, is irrelevant. I mean, all he knew in getting up was the count he was hearing, and he beat it. He beat Tyson badly in that fight.
@greenfruitface He did beat Tyson badly and I will never take that from Douglas, but he stayed down for so long for a reason. Those legs were wobbly when he got up and had the bell not rang right after, he would have gone right back down.
tyson used to go for broke because he HAD to.not because he wasnt skilled but he had lung problems since he was little that ppl overlooked beause of their own selfish wants and needs of him as a fighter.i think Tyson's sole reasoning to be a champion was to please Cus.After that, everything was trivial to him.He wasnt the same after he lost that desire and discipline Cus instilled in him.

mike tyson was the biggest disappointment in the history of the sport... until you can understand that, you dont know shit about boxing.
regardless of how good his career was it wasnt as great as his potential -- thats what makes him a disappointment.
he was a great fighter but he couldve and shouldve been better. a bum cant be a disappointment -- there cant be disappointment without expectations. there were high expectations for mike that he had the ability/opportunity to achieve and didnt. he was the biggest disappointment in the history of boxing.
He doesnt owe his potential to nobody, it's his life and thats why he is not the biggest disappointment in the history of boxing.
Get real he is a great boxer but some other put more afford into the sport, because when a boxer is knoucked out in the first few round that means he hasnt trained but when a boxer is being knoucked out in the last rounds of the fight\after the 8th round you can be sure he is in great shape just not anymore than the other fighter which is in our case Buster!
the hype surrounding tyson was that he was on track to becoming one of the greatest heavyweights the world had ever seen and he didnt. he never lived up to his full potential or expectations and, in the grand scheme of things, the buster douglas fight is really just a very small part of it.
@novirasputin2 Vyceapparel isn't implying fowl play, he's saying that a rookie ref made a bad call. But if you review the fight official fight tape you will see that it was a slow count. Somewhere around 14 seconds I think.
@vyceapparel Actually, I'd hate to tell you my friend, but the ref in that fight, Octavio Meyran, had refereed over 20 title fights and was no rookie. If he had counted faster, Douglas would still have gotten up. The fact is: Douglas wasn't hurt enough from that knock-down.
Tyson at his best? people argue when tyson stop being tyson around here but i think after the spinks fight he got away from all the things Cus taught him and his skills rapidly started to diminish, even after the douglas fight he was never really the same, sure the power was there, but the reflexes he once had to dodge a punch were not
If you are the biggest Tyson fan then you realize that Douglas had no business winning that fight. I give Douglas only this amount of credit - he took advantage of the oppurtunity he was given. For any one who thinks his win had anything to do with the skill level of himself or Tyson you really weren't paying attention. Douglas legitimately won that fight but not because of anything he did but because of what Tyson didn't do. Tyson at his best does not lose this fight. I know what I saw.
What's wrong with you?Of course Tyson at his best beats Douglas!!!However the way Buster fought this night he'd give any hw a fight on this night.
Tyson in peak condition beats Douglas on any night.A prime Tyson also beats Louis,Ali and everybody else-he's not ranked ahead of them 'cause he fucked up but on his best night he could beat 'em!!
sports are all about matchups and timing. you win some, you lose some. there's no such as thing "a" beat "b", "b" beat "c", so "a" should beat "c". just doesn't work in sports. that night, tyson lost. bad matchup for douglas at that time.
Bad matchup my ass. Douglas couldn't pay for a title before this fight and all of a sudden he is a bad matchup for the best HW in the fukin world? Stop the madness people he was FORTUNATE to fight an out of focus and regressing Tyson. You people are giving this cat too much credit... if he had done anything of note before this fight I would think differently but.... come on.
zeb, we're going to have to agree to disagree. i say bad matchup also because, even though tyson was out of shape it doesn't mean anyone could have beat him. an out of shape tyson can still knock someone out. he didn't, partly because buster took it to him in the first couple rounds. if you can't see that then i don't know what to tell you. also, not only did buster win, but in all honesty (and i mean this) he brutally whipped him.
Just because Tyson can summon a knockout punch doesn't mean he can finish an opponent whenever. He had taken a LOT of punishment during this fight so when he needed to summon it he couldn't yet he still caught Douglas with a shot that would have ended the thing if Douglas hadn't showed the courage. I give Douglas credit for preparing and being ready to fight. But as we have seen with a person such as Lennox Lewis that fight was not necessarily indicative as a true measure of Tyson's weakness.
I can agree to disagree with you but lets be clear on what exactly we disagree about - Douglas would lose to a focused Tyson PERIOD... So you can disagree to that. That Tyson never got a rematch with this fraud is a shame. It would have ended just like Lewis' rematch with Rahman. Unbelieveable that you cats think it didn't matter that he took him for granted. After Douglas tanked against Holyfield I thought it would end the Buster myth but now I feel bad the Mike didn't get to do it himself.
All it takes is a good fight from what you think is a mediocre heavy. Tyson was just a fighter (hence the title). It was everybody else who made him the myth like Hercules, Jesus, etc.
So it wasn't a surprise, and yet despite it, it also was.
Therefore, Douglas accomplishment particularly stands out because he did nothing of note beforehand.
Its a very simple concept that a guy not hostile towards understanding, will understand.
saying 'everyone else who made him the myth like hercules, jesus' is like saying Ali was just a myth. thats dumb. they were no myths they're living legends. if anything, they WERE the modern hercules/jesus; with actual proof
@zebbie2000 If he would have caught Tyson with a lucky punch, or if Tyson was old, ok. But he smacked Tyson around for 10 rounds and then knocked him flat on his back. They had to carry him out of the ring. Who are you to judge the man that kayoed a prime Tyson?
What a lovely man. Nicely spoken regular kind of guy whose priorities are very simple. His family. I have read the book 'The Last Great Fight' by Joe Laylan who writes about the Douglas/Tyson clash. Laylan comes at it from a very broad angle. You get a sense of who Douglas and Tyson are, the people and influences in their lives before they clashed. Before you judge D's worthiness cf to Ali etc, read about him. He stands head and shoulders above most of us and has a balanced view of boxing.
What a lovely man. I recommend reading the book 'The Last Great Fight' written by Joe Layden. Layden researched and interviewed the various people, including Douglas and Tyson,
buster is a gentalman, and allthough im a tyson fan thru and thru, this guy on that night in tokyo, was better than ali against foreman, driven by the loss of his mama, hats off to douglas guys, a legand he is, and will be rememberd in history as so, i also think he would have destroyed lewis at this era, no problem
That is a preposterous statement. Yeah, he was motivated, yeah, he was inspired but to say that he was better than Ali on what he himself calls his best night??(I disagree with good ol' Cash; I think vs Williams was his best but who am I to judge in that regard?)Also, he could not have beat Lewis. He lost to a poor man's Lewis in '87(Tony Tucker) so I don't think he could have touched Lewis. But he seems like a nice fella, that we can agree on.

Buster is the man. But please dont mention him in the same sentence as Ali and Foreman ever again. They are light years better then Buster.

Anybody know what Douglas is up to these days? I know he was arrested once but I heard he's doing good for himself now.

buster is a gentalman, and allthough im a tyson fan thru and thru, this guy on that night in tokyo, was better than ali against foreman, driven by the loss of his mama, hats off to douglas guys, a legand he is, and will be rememberd in history as so, i also think he would have destroyed lewis at this era, no problem
