the moving and subsequent replacing of the ladder adds to the comedic effect nicely with corbett muttering under his breathe as he does it. and I swear at 2:07 when he looks away he is trying to keep a laugh in when big ronnies asks for saw tips! just classic stuff.

In a later show, Ronnie Barker confessed that the ending was very weak. In the time that had passed since that sketch, he'd come up with the perfect ending. Instead of a man, a very healthy and well endowed woman comes out to serve the customer at the end. Instead of the clerk reading the list, the customer asks for knockers.

@boxersforever3 My guess has always been that the list had the word "bollocks" written on it. (Drop the "h" out of "bill hooks" and the two sound vaguely similar). Hard to imagine now, but "bollocks" would have been the height of bad language if used on TV in the 70s.

Amongst modern comic duos only Harry & Paul and Mitchell & Webb make me laugh much, but Corbett & Barker were the tops.

I'm not actually that old, but I remember there being people who dressed and acted like this when I was a kid. My grandad was exactly like the customer, and I loved visiting the old stores full of antiquated post war tools and electronics.
