I'm split. I think what should happen is this: the government buy up the houses that are about to foreclose or have recently foreclosed, and then the government work with the owners of the houses so that they can make their payments.

I assume you have an adjustable rate mortgage so maybe the government could set the rate of all those types of mortgages at an affordable amount. You would keep your house. I agree that dollar would probably devalue, if the theories work out. However, the dollar is the world's reserve currency and considered a safe investment choice. Its reputation will slow its decline. Now, your notion that devaluation robs people of wealth is not right. Money measures the worth of assets. If the underlying assets have inflated worth, then the currency representing that worth will devalue. In other words, we are worth less because we are worth less, not because the dollar.
Have you paid any attention to the purchasing power of the dollar? It's way less than it was twenty years ago. Don't you see that that is how this whole corrupt system operates? They print more and more money (which is based on nothing ever since they abolished the gold standard)thereby deflating the currency reducing our power to buy things while at the same time they're not affected because they can just print as much money as they want.
We are not in disagreement here. The purchasing power of the dollar is much lower because the real economy is much smaller today than it was before, proportionally speaking, especially compared to other countries (Japan, China, S. Korea, etc.). With reduced capacity to produce real assets, the dollar is dropping like a stone. I was merely pointing out that the dollar buys less today because the underlying assets and productive capacities have diminished.
Now THIS is a President I can stand behind and be proud of. One who actually knows what he's doing, and not one who's constantly portrayed as a clueless puppet.

I'm split. I think what should happen is this: the government buy up the houses that are about to foreclose or have recently foreclosed, and then the government work with the owners of the houses so that they can make their payments.
Writing a blank check to banks is ridiculous, that much is true. The interest rate on my mortgage is rising, however, and if it rises too much more, I won't be able to make payments. That's not my fault, that's the bank. I shouldn't be punished, you know?

I assume you have an adjustable rate mortgage so maybe the government could set the rate of all those types of mortgages at an affordable amount. You would keep your house. Perhaps W's motto all along should have been "if I only had a brain". I am so relieved to have a President(-elect) who is articulate, serious, capable and not afraid of smart people. He is creating an advisory board to challenge his policies -- Hey, Rove: can you possibly imagine that?

Dow: from -49.15 to -1.28 (+47.87)

I agree that dollar would probably devalue, if the theories work out. However, the dollar is the world's reserve currency and considered a safe investment choice. Its reputation will slow its decline. Now, your notion that devaluation robs people of wealth is not right. Money measures the worth of assets. If the underlying assets have inflated worth, then the currency representing that worth will devalue. In other words, we are worth less because we are worth less, not because the dollar.

Have you paid any attention to the purchasing power of the dollar? It's way less than it was twenty years ago. Don't you see that that is how this whole corrupt system operates? They print more and more money (which is based on nothing ever since they abolished the gold standard)thereby deflating the currency reducing our power to buy things while at the same time they're not affected because they can just print as much money as they want.

We are not in disagreement here. The purchasing power of the dollar is much lower because the real economy is much smaller today than it was before, proportionally speaking, especially compared to other countries (Japan, China, S. Korea, etc.). With reduced capacity to produce real assets, the dollar is dropping like a stone. I was merely pointing out that the dollar buys less today because the underlying assets and productive capacities have diminished.
