Peter Falk is the don of cool. Was taken by Ken's dark haired companion at the play (when he was interrupted by Lily La Sanka) and was delighted that it turned out to be Marcia Wallace-the future voice of Mrs Krabapple from the Simpsons.
So tragic to read that Barbara Colby was later senslessly murdered. The writers' office block is at 9000 Sunset Boulevard, LA.
Directed by Steven Spielberg and this fact wasn't even mentioned in this trailer! The marketing guys today would be having a field day ramming such a fact down our throats.
@marty0mart It was mentioned at 25" that it is directed by Steven Spielberg. But in 1971 Spielberg was just another studio director. But you can see his directing and cinematography fingerprints all over the movie.
@selaromyar The opening shot is great in this one and it made me think that it looked different from the typical Columbo's that I had seen. Didn't hit me until I saw Spielberg's name in the credits.
The only consistent problem with the writing in the Columbo series is that the detective always zeros in on the murderer prematurely, without enough justification for doing so.
@JeffersonDinedAlone I think he just goes by natural instinct-and by the flaws and inconsistencies in the killer's story. Or by things that don't add up at the crime scene. Also, there's the fact that most people are killed by those they know.
May THE lieutenant rest in peace...he will live in our hearts forever. Thanks for sharing this! For 'Columbo' fans looking for episodes you may have missed, seasons and series like his 90s Movies are available on dvd thru amazon. Thats where I got mine. Ive posted clips from them on my channel. {Greetings from Chicago, USA}
View it, Pass it on, Enjoy, and God Bless! It's all I can do being short of the ability to meet his family and play directly for them. (In character of course) Grandpa would say,"I'm just resting I'll be down in a minute, my raincoat is in the closet." :-) COLUMBO Forever!

I think this was my favorite Columbo episode. I just two days ago found the cabin (on Google Earth) at Big Bear Lake, California , area where some of the scenes were shot, although it's been modified since 1971, when the episode was made. I couldn't find country store, though, but I think I found the approximate location where it was. The area has change quite a bit in the last 40 years.
Woah, is this that old? I was watching that with my mom when I was around 10 so during in the mid 90s. I guess it doesn't get old. Columbo is still the best !:P
So far, I've sen the Prescription: Murder pilot and the Murder by the Book. The original has that standard 60s feel to the direction, but with Spielberg behind the camera on this one, suddenly weight and depth were added to the storytelling.
Steven Speilberg is a good director, but there is something about his work...I'm not sure what it is...that makes me not want to watch re-runs of his movies or television episodes. His directing reminds me of the actor James Whitmore, good fundamentals but too intense to a point where I'm uncomfortable watching.
Peter & Jack made great foes in these episodes.Real classics. Jack died in '76 from smoke inhalation after he fell asleep smoking. Peter came down with Alzheimers & is now in a home. BTW, that broad at :44 has some horse face.
BTW since we're waxing nostalgic about the unfair passage of time that "horse faced broad'"s name was Brabra Colby and she was gunned down in an apparently random shooting at age 36. You are a class act, my friend...
elegant, smart serie...amazing. I want to buy every DVD chapter. @leealderman Yes, Jack Cassidy was brilliant whether he was doing a drama like Columbo or comedy like on "The Lucy Show" or "Bewitched". He was a real talent. He died tragically in the mid 70's.
Even though I do have all the episodes on DVD, the 70s era episodes were indeed the real classics IMHO. The 1968 pilot episode "Prescription: Murder," from which the well-known Columbo persona was initially being cast and molded, is also obviously a super classic.
my fav columbo is by dawns early light. He seemed to change when he did columbo in the 90's. He seemed more kind to people. Not as cunning. 70's was best.
First thanks to whoever posted this video. Barbara Colby is my late sister and its nice to see her here on the web. Thanks also to those who even remember her name and praise her work. Specially erikcoolingen :)
In the obituary listed for her memorial service (Los Angeles Times Jul. 30, 1975), it states that Barbara Colby was survived by her mother Estelle Galeano, her father Robert Colby, & her estranged husband Robert Levitt. Nowhere was it mentioned that she had any siblings.
Interesting. I am a Galeano. Barbara's half sister. I guess at obit time no one wanted to go into the full family details. FYI Bob Levitt is Ethel Merman's son. Barbara had a half sister on the Colby side and 3 of us on the Galeano side. Thanks for keeping her lifes work alive :)
Just so you know, I have posted the first 2 eps of "Phyllis" that she did prior to her passing. It's through my other youtube ID (Edster73). I hope at some point the show is released on DVD.
I hope I'm not prying or anything, but as a fan of hers of sorts, I found it very disheartening to learn the details of her passing as well as how her murder was never solved. How in heaven's name do you & the rest of your family cope with that? If it's tough for her fans, it must be hell for the family.
No I hadnt seen the Phyllis shows online- so thanks!! There were 3 by shows by the way. The ones that I have on vhs but have never seen online are her 2 Mary Tyler Moore episodes as Sherry.
Barbara was a spiritual person. She did everything to the fullest, then moved onto the next thing. We all wore white to her service at Will Geer's place and again on the boat when we took her ashes to sea. She was ready and eager for whatever came next so we celebrated.
I know that there were 3 shows but I acquired the first 2 from an old VHS release that only had the first 2. I've never seen the 3rd episode.
I'm relieved to hear that the family had a sense of peace about her passing but surely there must have been some desire to see the case solved. I've learned there were many attacks that same night.
I guess how you all "celebrated" allows her life to not only be defined by how she died but who she was as a person. In the end that's all that matters.
Right. Maybe 7 random deaths in Santa Monica that one night and zero leads. Have u ever seen the book that suggests she was targeted because of her role in the play Murderous Angels?
No I haven't. What book is it & why does it suggest that? I was only 2 when she was killed so I have no frame of reference when it comes to the play alas. I only know her work from her 2 MTM appearances, her 2 (out of 3) appearances on PHYLLIS, and her ep of COLUMBO. One day I did a search for her on imdb, hoping to see what else she was in & learned of her murder. Again, I was horrified to learn it was never solved.
How did Cloris handle her passing? Was she at the funeral? Were they close?
Murderous angels is about Daj Hammersjkold (sp?) who of course disappeared in a mysterious plane crash. Black leader white mistress. Lou Gossett Jr was in it. There were some protests about her race but nothing big .. I remember Valerie harper, Ed asner, Mtm, Cloris all of them at the service. There is an interview or perhaps a book where MTM talks about the impact on her when B died.

Yes! He will always talk about his wife but we never get to see her!!!
The early 70's Columbo episodes are the best!!!! But you have to watch the show from the beginning to understand the murder plot always performed by rich & powerfull people, but Columbo will always get them with a small little clue or detail!
The Lieutenant ROCKS! Most of the episodes and mystery movies are available on dvd online thru columbiahouse or amazon. Its sad that he has pretty much lost touch with reality because of his disease. Be sure to check out Murder Inc. Its Peter Falks movie premiere and he plays a KILLER!
In the episode, Cassidy & Milner play a couple of writers who create a popular series of mystery books featuring a character named Mrs. Melville. Things go sour when Milner, who's been doing most of the work, wants out. I always thought Bochco had Frederic Dannay & Manfred B. Lee, who created Ellery Queen, in mind when he wrote the script.
I love Columbo, you know, with all the Wealthy Rich murder's going on in the World, with all the alamony running around in the world,i gaurantee you, that most of columbo's videos can solve them all,Thank god for human logic.but most of all, i want to say that, thank god for the people behind Columbo.because they traveled down many roads them selves.Peter Falk is a Genius.but because he is Italian,I support the men behind them. All men behind them UCMIUDTCMI ;-)
One of the greatest episodes EVER!!!! Columbo is the greatest, most entertaining, clever detective show...and if that Peter Falk isn't the cutest man.....ohhhh, he is adorable....
Peter Falk always looks so different in other roles-especially when he's smartly dressed. Probably because he loses Columbo's stoop.

Excellent episode, directed by young Steven Spielberg. Jack Cassidy played also in another episodes of Columbo. One of my favourite tv series.

Jack Cassidy, Robert Culp and of course Patrick McGoohan were the best suspects. Robert Vaughn should have done more Columbos.
