Well that explains it!

Store bought mulch, which is mostly bark, does not work for a vegetable garden at all; but home made mulch which is mostly lawn trimmings, works great for a vegetable garden.

Now I know why.

@dianemummvideos You are very welcome. It is amazing how many gardeners don't get around to feeding the soil. There seams to be allot of free compost/ mulch out there, if you know where to look. Thanks for the comment. Best wishes David.
