I like the SSD part, but instead of messing with the optical, I prefer my Sonnet USB 3.0 card that allows me to use my USB 3 2TB external hard drive (OS X and Windows 7) and other USB 3 items.
You sir are the man.. thank you so much for the great video tutorial and contained all the info I needed to install a SSD and keep my current HDD. Thank you!
i just bought the data doubler, 8gb of ram and a 2nd 120gb ssd (intel 320 series sata II) for my 2011 MBP running lion. nice video i will post my reply soon!
Does ejecting one drive (2 drive system ssd&hdd) increase battery life? In other words does ejecting drive stops it spinning and using energy? So i could control the energy usage directly.
@BruandAaronStrikeBac You could always turn the optical drive into an external drive, owc sells an enclosure you can put it in. That way you can connect it over usb for the occasional times you need it.
Carefull with HDD heat in the Optibay: it melted the cable going from the Motherboard to the Main Drive Bay. This is a different macbook so maybe the cable is under the optibay but watch out for the other cable going diagonally towards the screen.
@NiboJibble I'm about to order the OWC SSD and Data Doubler. This will mean no DVD on board, BUT I am also purchasing a OWC slim line ext DVD drive. This will cover me for the odd occasion need a DVD but also gives me an awesome MacBook Pro QuadCore with 990GB of hard drive space. Long live Domreis7337
@NiboJibble correct, but for ppl like me, it's not a big deal i usually watch an transfer movies from a flash drive, plus cheap external dvd drive, not a big deal.
Hi, the screw that is hidden behind that black thing, one of the screws on that black thing on my mackbook pro won't come out. DO you have any suggestions on what I can do to get that out. Please let me know. I'm in a pinch here.
Great video but there's something that i don't understand. Why would you need to install the Mac OS X on your SSD? Is that really necessary to have it on both your HDD and SSD?
@ehsan83 I installed OS X on the SSD because the speed of the SSD is extremely after than the HDD. You want your OS and Applications on the fastest drive. I then formatted the HDD and use that to store music, photos, video, ect.
@ehsan83 You use the SSD as a system disk (OS X installed) and the other one for data (movies etc.). The SSD it WAY faster than a regular HDD so you gain a lot of speed if you have OS X installed on a SSD.
Why would you put the HDD in the data doubler? The main hard drive area has built in shock protection that is not required with SSDs. When I do this, I am going to put the SSD in the Data Doubler, and install the OS on the SSD.
I am doing this to my macbook my only question is how do you get the both to link up together as if they were one? I want the SSD for the speed but i want to save stuff onto my regular hdd
@5dayslater I haven't had that big of an issue w/ not having a Optical Drive. For the times that I need it I usually have the SuperDrive for the MacBook Air in my Car or laptop case.
@Domreis7337 I didn't even think about the super drive for an option. That's another great idea for the data doubler. I'm glad you brought that up because I hadn't even thought about using that for a MacBook Pro.
Thanks for the information! I'll probably install 2 hard drives now!
@5dayslater just get an external one and use itunes instead!! so much easier and in the long run much more efficient(depending on what you use the computer for, i use c4d,aae,photoshop,illustrator,aperture,final cut, and i need room to install windows to use sony vegas)
if i was to get a new mbp 13" and immediately upgrade to the ssd showed in this video and either a tb or 500gb hdd(before even starting up the computer), which drive would i install files to?Where would i save osx leapord?
@warman0712 you can either share an optical drive on the network or use the optical drive in an external case. For many people they will use the second hdd much more often than needing an optical drive. Much more useful.
so do you have to put the SSD in the main drive bay if you want to boot from it? Or can you put it in the optibay and boot from it there? Seems like it would be better to put a conventional drive in the bay where it seems more secure, and have the SSD in the optibay.
what about vibration? it seems the normal drive is attached from only one side with the data doubler and as i know this normal drives vibrates specially if its 7200rpm
It makes me mad because a lot of laptops in the price range of the 15 inch MacBook Pro, such as the HP dv7 or the Alienware M15x can have two hard drives AND ship with a Blu Ray drive.
lol, why does this make u mad? Have u ever looked at a HP Dv7 or a Alienware M15x? you can like stack 2 Macbook Pros on top of each other and its the same thikness..
This is awesome! I never knew you could do that. Very clever idea too, because many people (myself included) rarely use the optical drive. Great tutorial by the way. You're very informative and clear. Keep it up!
How did the Mac Pro turn out in the end? Repaired? Replaced?
i bought a 240gb pro ssd from owc. its awesome. takes about 18 sec to boot to snow leopard and about 35-40 sec to windows 7 via bootcamp. i would recommend this drive at anyone that has the cash. its very nice.
thanks for the video is awesome, i just have one question, how you erase all your data from the hhd, thanks.

2 questions:
How did you battery time react to this?
and
Wouldn't you just be able to plug the SSD into the Doppler, and make the Mac boot from that?

@muzvit I haven't noticed a difference in battery life. I heard that you had better performance plugging the SSD into the Primary drive bay.

1. What screw driver set is that I like it.

3. Also is there any case that OWC sells that can house the optical drive?
