  • This is there best song. <3 .

  • this song reeks of 80s influences with the synth & Bunnymen (a la Will Sergeant) -ish guitar solo... & of course, i love it ;-)

  • Not one of their hits...but one of my favorite song of theirs!!!

  • this is verry smexy

  • Discombobulation

    bitches

  • hit replay 1,000,000x.

  • Those. Synths. aaa <3 This is such an underrated track by the Shins, srsly

  • This is my 3rd favorite song from The Shins, it makes me sad that this isn't one of their hits!

  • Is this an argument to see who can use the longest words?

  • such an underrated song

  • I am a christian, and I like this song because it's true that some christians can be very judgemental and closed-minded, and that is wrong. I respect and even can relate to atheists and agnostics, and I wouldn't condemn anyone for what they do or don't believe. So I still agree with the meaning of this song. Just thought I'd let everyone know that not all christians fit the stereotype of being judgemental. :) A few of my best friends are agnostics, although I don't know any atheists.

  • @emery6601 If you're such a Christian, you should me more consistent or give it up. The Christian god is a very judgmental thing; don't hide from it like such a coward.

  • @Attritive

Next time you have a thought...Let it go. You exude the utmost ignorance.

  • @fletchdies Christianity is a religion of judgment. As an atheist, I am doomed to hell by the Christian god. As a man living with a woman out of wedlock, I am a sinner, who is probably doomed to hell unless I repent (which I won't). As a man who celebrates this life and all it has to offer, who trumpets the virtue of selfishness and money--I am the worst of men, at least according to Jesus. As I said, live up to your religion; don't be a coward and try to hide from it's tenets.

  • @Attritive

Im sorry, I know you? You know my faith and the fact that I am a coward..Wow! Your all too knowing, First off brainiac..Being a Christian is a faith and belief. It is not a Religion like Catholicism, or Judaism, et cetera. It is strictly believing and living Gods word. Period. No bells and whistles like the Catholic Church. You will never understand the power and work of God when you do not allow him to work in you. Takes more to believe in something you cannot touch or see

  • @fletchdies Your statement is an evasion of every single thing I said by way of cowardly, backhanded denouncements. Typical of a Christian, to prove your opponent's point, yet continue to think you're in the right.

  • @fletchdies

The last time God worked in me I ended up with a bad case of diarrhea.

  • @emery6601 everyone knows atheists. they're probably just too scared to tell you since they know you'd preach to them.

  • @emery6601 oh,.

i always though this song was about a couple who broke up and they are trying to decide which of them still gets to hang out with mutual friends and who has to stop hanging out with those mutual friends.

the Christian thing makes ALOT more sense.

  • @emery6601 i appreciate that. i'm a witch who practices mainly what most westerners know as Voodoo, which is a religion that is actually not about worshipping the devil or hurting people, and is the way that i personally connect with Christ. i appreciate real christians who live their beliefs instead of just preach at other people, because i attempt to live by the same essential values of honesty, love, justice, and goodwill toward others, and i have no time moral posturing or people like that

  • @emery6601 "A man who is eating or lying with his wife or preparing to go to sleep in humility, thankfulness and temperance, is, by Christian standards, in an infinitely higher state than one who is listening to Bach or reading Plato in a state of pride."

    -C. S. Lewis

  • @emery6601 i can see how you think it means that but the words are come together so vaguely that its hard to say that that's what the singer is singing about.

  • @emery6601 There's nothing wrong with judging people.

  • @emery6601 I'm an atheists, so there you know one now, kind of :D and I really think its cool you think that way, allot of people at my school are christian and think I'm the equivalent to a terrorist for not believing in any spiritual beliefs.

  • i heard this was about James Mercer's atheism and having a confrontation with someone about it.

James Mercer is so brave putting songs like this one and Phantom Limb into public light.

Why is atheism such a taboo topic?

So many religious ppl are just so damn judgmental.

I have felt their wrath... being an atheist, myself...

  • @KellyKellyy01 you're right! i first heard the shins music in 2006, and i didnt really understand the song meanings. now i listen to the albums over again and especially the track 'Saint Simon' it has a very strong atheistic(?) theme. brilliant band i have always liked them!

i guess religious people aren't used to being questioned on their validity?

  • @KellyKellyy01 We religious people are so judgmental, huh? Sounds like atheists are too!

I'm just giving you a hard time. Listen, I'm a believer. I get that some people don't believe and don't want to. But it's not that brave to release material about atheism and it's not a taboo topic. Not in the entertainment culture at least, and certainly not within this genre. A really brave thing would be a song about all the good that religious people do, even though he himself may not believe.

  • good track. tx for uploading it

  • "don't ask for his opinion, we are to drown him in holy water." brilliant. :)

  • @theycallherkatie "...do you remember my reply? one finger parallel to the sky." haha :')
